How to groom a Spitz

This grooming video is focused on the brushing and trimming of paws on a double coated dog. This is Koda the Japanese Spitz. He was born on the 3rd of November 2012, so will be coming up to 8 this year!
Before filming this video, Koda was bathed the previous day and had a quick brush. Which is why not much fur came off, normally there is a lot more, especially when shedding!
Please note: Take extra caution when trimming around the paws, if your dog doesn't stay still then its best to take them to a professional groomer.

I had a poodle and a Japanese spitz. I brushed the Japanese spitz with an ordinary big dog brush and it never had any tangles, except a couple of times behind the ears. I brushed with two hands: an empty palm opening the coat so that skin was in sight and the brush brushing a quite small amoubt of fur so that the hair was straight and the skin came in sight in a new line, and so on, quite orderly.

I just googled "grooming a Spitz" and found your video. I was worried that a slicker brush might be damaging their coats but see you use one, too. I actually use exactly the same utensils as you. Also trim paws and legs but also tummies and bums a little. My Japanese Spitz loves to lie down so I can do her tummy, the German Spitz has started doing the same. :)

Sorry for the late reply! Start training recall as soon aa you get your puppy. Practise inside your house and garden first, praising and treating everytime your puppy comes to you when called. When they are allowed to go outside use a long line (around 10 metres) to continue training.

Its very normal for females to shed a lot after birth. It will grow back in time. Just keep brushing :)

Japanese spitz are a newer breed, created for better health. The eskimo comes in 3 different sizes where the japanese spitz only comes in 1 size. They also have slightly different temperments too.

Pomeranians and spitz should never be cut (apart from their feet) ask for just a bath, blow dry and brush, that's all :)

Congrats! Be consistent with Training. Take them out after every meal, drink, playtime, morning and before bed. Watch them closely, if they start sniffing around take them outside. Its also good to use a toilet word like "go potty" along with lots of praise! Never punish them for peeing inside.

I have a german spitz AND TRUST ME, YES THEY DO xd That’s why if you have one you need to brush him/her several times a week.

They generally have a big shed 1-2 times a year (but this can last weeks) other times of the year they shed small amounts. If you dont like fur on your clothes, furniture, car, food,ect.. This may not be the dog for you 😂

I use to have one and it was the best fog I ever had -very smart and are easily trained but the downside is they do shed a lot and bark a lot I named mine snowball as you find balls of white hair as it sheds in balls

Hello, I have a white German Spitz and recently shaved his hair to look like a little lion. I heard people saying it might grow frizzy now.. is this true? How can I help my dog grow it back naturally?

It's true that sometimes it won't grow back the same, often growing back rough, frizzy and patchy. You can help it grow back normally by feeding a good diet, supplementing with things like fish oil and brushing them alot. Even if thier coat is short, brushing will help stimulate the follicles and get rid of dead coat so new coat can grow in. :)

@@bluewhale2600 I haven't heard of that food so I can't comment. Every dog is different and what works for some might not work for others. As long as you are following a vetinary nutritionist approved diet that is complete and balanced. I feed a scientifically backed kibble with different added toppers like fresh food or freeze/air dried meat :)

Good genetics. If the parents have a nice fluffy coat then so will the pups. It can take about 3 years to properly grow their adult coat too.

If your dog stays still enough and there no risk of cutting them then yes. Just remember to blend the fur so theres no cutting lines!

very bad. dogs are not supposed to sit brush and brush them. they want to go
