I don't like to see any animal restrained and stressed, I understand why people give you so much grief for scruffing - to have compassion and see something in distress evokes a very visceral reaction for a lot of people, BUT I would rather see a short period of restraint and upset to resolve a health issue than see the matting get worse, for her skin to start pulling and becoming damaged and infected! You're doing an excellent job, and you clearly care about what you do. Keep doing how you do! You're awesome.

You did a great job for them. I'm a Vet Tech. Some things people might not know when it comes to cats...their skin is paper thin, it rolls around their body, it's often the same color as their hair and cats can turn their bodies every which way. I've been to the ER couple times from handling cats. They are lightening fast. If they get you with their teeth, they will bit down to the bone. It's not their falt, cats are just sensitive creatures. Again, well done.

For a cat that doesn’t like being shaved at all, there is only two options. Scruffing, which has no physical harm on the cat, and sedation, which can physically harm a cat especially older ones. The pet parents did a wonderful job. Both you and the parents were patient and understood, that even though their kitty growled and hissed, you were helping her. Great job DeDe! ^^

Most people don't understand that animal care doesn't always LOOK like they think it should. Its about the care and safety of the animal and the safety of the person performing the task whether it be grooming or vet care. Animals don't understand we are trying to help them all the time and sometimes you have to use different forms of restraint to ensure both parties are safe and no one gets hurt. I think you did an amazing job. You stayed calm, kept her comforted and had the owner involved.

This video is making me sooo nervous! We took in a stray cat and she is so lovable and would generally never bite but one day she got really upset about a possum she could see outside and was trying to claw her way out of the window. My mom was worried she would get hurt and took a blanket to try to get her, aware that she might snap in this situation. Unfortunately, her head got out and she bit down into my mom's hand so deeply, her mouth opened so wide that she got stuck for a moment! I had never in my life heard my mom screech like that. I think I have PTSD remembering it!!! ;__; Her hand swelled up to twice its size and she had to go to the hospital immediately. The cat had tore a tendon in her hand and it was infected so she needed surgery. Even years later, my mom's hand still has issues. Cat bites are no joke! That being said, my mom still has the cat and that cat looooves her to bits and has never snapped or made any indication of aggression (toward a person) before or since that one time. But you really just never know with cats!

Where I work we call that an average cat for grooming. One suggestion for your kitty grooming - when we groom them in a lion cut we do go much shorter - I use a Bravura set on #30 or set on #10 and go in reverse - plus a very thorough combing out of the legs, tail and head and, YES, a bath. After that very thorough grooming we offer a bi-weekly or monthly comb-out service where the owners bring the cat in and we comb it out completely for them, and regular baths to keep the coat in good condition and under control. During the comb-outs we also clip the belly, the butt, the pads of the feet, the arm pits, behind the ears, clean the ears and clip the nails or replace vinyl Soft Claws if need be. Most of the battles during cat grooms is because the cats have never been routinely bathed, combed and worked with. No different than dogs in that regard. If we work on the cat on a very regular basis the cats are much easier to do and stay in good shape, so no more cat-from-hell grooms as a result. Much safer for both cat and groomer. We work as teams on the cats, even for the comb-outs. Very popular with the kitty owners and we make truckloads of money with the service as very few groomers in this area will touch cats.

Fantastic job. I was expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised. It appeared that the cat became comfortable with you and your voice near the end. I'm a cat person. Cats, just like dogs can sense when people mean them no harm but must do things that will help them in the end. The more long hair and mats that you removed, the more the cat appeared to settle down. No drooling, which usually means fear. Dede, you are one of a kind. Keep up the good work. Keep David too, he's a real cutie. :) Great job.

When it comes to grooming a cat, speed counts. I'm reminded of the saying that, prior to the days of anaesthesia, "a good surgeon was a fast surgeon." To be honest, I never thought grooming was a priority to me as a pet owner, but after watching a few of your videos, I take great care of my pets! I had a chow retrieve mix (she passed a few years ago of old age) I shaved every summer so she was not hot, she loved baths and I thought blowdrying her was so cute cause she enjoyed it, I did it for fun lol my cat will only let me groom her, if she gets a sticker she comes to me, its cute brushing her cause I'm the only one she'll let do it. I only have short hair dogs now 3 of them, all pit mixes, one I just got today. One was a rescue and the other was my birthday gift to myself. He hates being brushed and its so funny, he even gets mad when I brush our rescue dog and she's loves being brushed. I guess I never realized how important it was, I always enjoyed grooming my pets. I'm the only one who can cut the dogs nails too. I hope more people learn to enjoy grooming as I have just realized I have, its good for the soul 😇

Hope this message reaches these guys. Give your kitty her favorite treat and brush her regularly, just work on getting her used to the brush and if you come across a matted knot, don't cut it horizontally instead snip it vertically several times and try to brush it out. Just work on them like that and this really really help, of course don't snip close to the skin.

Thank you for showing us this. My Mum's cat is an old Persian, who hates clippers - period. He hates her grooming or going anywhere near his back end and was always a vet sedated groom. I'm now grooming him once every 3-6 months at his home and hes getting better with each groom for me (I found I cant let mum be involved with his groom because he gets too upset). I am use to using scissors but I am always extremely careful and don't like to rush myself. Like you I find getting in and out fast and decisively helps, (taking into account the animals nature and skin quirks).

My long haired cats start matting up in the spring big time. I pull on the mats and loosen them up and eventually they come right off. I don't think for any long haired cats that has mats that there is no need for some big drastic shaving.
