Matted Fur Removal On Elderly Shorthaired Cat
Mitzi, an elderly shorthaired girl arrived today in need of a good groom over. She has quite a few health issues at the moment and so her coat had become matted all over. She must have felt so relieved when all those dreadful matts were finally removed from her coat.
Elderly cats need our care and attention as they cannot reach as well as they used to, to keep their coats in tip top condition.
It only takes a few minutes a day to brush your cat through so as to prevent them from becoming matted.

My 18yr old girl is a long hair MC and I groom her at least twice a day. Its a continual battle against the matts but she would be so uncomfortable with her hygiene and mobility if I did'nt help her. She loves her Zoom Groom brush through at the end too! Thanks❤

As someone who has had 3 hairdressers combing out mats in my hair after a basin washing at a salon, it’s hard to watch the way groomers tug at the coat as they pull on the mats. When I groom my cats I always pinch the base of the knot so there is no tension on their sensitive skin. I’m sure all the hairdressers I’ve had in my life didn’t understand or think combing out my knots bothered me either.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment, that really means a lot to me. I guess all us cat lovers continually talk to our own pusscats, so it is no different for me to do so with my clients cats. They are all so different in personalities, but they know instinctively when they can trust someone, and talking to them helps keep the energy levels nice and calm. Thank you once again x

Yes she would have felt so much better with all those removed from the coat. Our cats are proud of their coats and when they can't mange them for themselves, they can get depressed. So, by getting this little one's coat back to the best I could on the day, her Mum can now work on her at home to help bring the shine back to her coat as her health improves too.

Oh they are funny aren't they the way they just flop over on one side. Sometimes to prevent you from grooming a particular bit and other times because they want that side doing. Wish they could speak to us, it would make life so much easier!

The thing is to take it slowly and if your cat gets fidgety, leave them and go back later on or even the following day. No point getting them upset and then you angry. Keep things very light and calm. Your pusscat will thank you for it.

Mine only had 4 matts,, on his back. I took the electric shaver and they just came right off, no tugging, no pulling , happy cat

How do you stop the cat running away

Black cats.. ahhh.. My Dixie was black, and she had the dandruff thing going on as well when I got her. Very slowly sorted the coat and the dandruff went away on its own. Ok, she wasn't THAT bad, but it did help. Turned out to become 18.5, that cat :) So who knows with Mitzi :)

I got a loverly 3-4 yearold black puddy with same length fur as Mittsie, short but thick, I diagnozed him with mild CH, wobbly head when concentraing and his back legs are a bit iffy bit like a puppet on strings , he can't jump for nothing runs like a crab and chiped all the points of his canines jumping or sliding of window cills etc. He will let me brush him all day long apart from his back legs/bum cheeks. And that's where he get matt tufts worse, because with his slow to respond back legs he falls into it in his tray and can't seem to clean that area him self. Is there a way to calm him down or hold him without me being killed or him getting to upset, his bite isn't that bad as he chiped all the point of as I said, but he has claws of a golden eagle. He is a very soft cat, very submissive, very talkative, loves being slung over the shoulder like a parrot and always gives me a wink back. Thanks for any advise.

Feed him then do a little bit at a time then reward with treats. Checkout the channel Helpful Vancouver Vet for a pose called “squish that cat” and instructions on what to do. You can also look up “veterinarian methods to hold a car securely” there’s a really good video I saw once that describes a whole bunch, it was to teach vet techs different positions and poses I think

Hiya Linn, Thanks for watching my videos and for reaching out to me, It took me quite a while to find something suitable and eventually discovered these. They are very protective from teeth and claws and easy to keep clean. They are from a company in America called Arm Chaps. You have to measure your arms and they taylor them to fit you. Good luck.

Do you wash them?

When I did my training, I was trained how to wash cats, groom, clip and dry them. However, when mobile, it is difficult to be able to carry all your tools, dryers being very heavy and cumbersome, so no I don't wash them. I use foam shampoos and conditioners on their coats instead.

My dads cat has this problem i am going to attempt this my self with clippers. She trusts me a lot. Apart from the comb what advice can u give me and after all the mats do i just spray the solution spray all over i cant seem to find that one on amazon as its expired

They don’t like to groom themselves as much, so when a knot forms, they don’t bother, which then forms even more knots until they can’t keep up.
