Man, you guys are a bit overwhelming with your positive comments 😍 - Thank you for all the kind words! I've updated the description with time indexes, so you can skip around. Sheet music is also available on my site for both the main theme (piano) and the outtro (more of a 'score').

Hey Jonathon. Just started learning keys at 38 after a lifetime of singing and DJ'ing and an Audio engineering degree. My Mom is a concert pianist and could have taught me at anytime, but wasn't until your videos that I really got excited about it. Please post some new videos when you can. Also, my pops has a band over in Ronan MT. (The late bloomers) they'd love to play with you if you ever get out that way.

Hello Jonathan. Serious question - are you planning to release an album anytime soon? I love listening to the funky, complex music that you write and produce and there seems to be a dearth of such material. I would gladly pay to be a member for a campaign to fund such an endeavor. Please consider it. You have plenty of material I think to put into an album.

Great lesson! I must get a longer MINI keyboard to play with your tutorials! No can do on a Piano / standard size keys... I played the chord you played at 3:03 (D-G#-C#-E) with THE SAME HAND POSTURE on a MINI 32-keys keyboard, which has an octave shorter by almost 3cm (13.5cm) from a Piano octave :)

Reminds me a bit of Max Middleton's clavinet figure at the beginning of Play with Me on Jeff Beck's jazz fusion album Wired. Same kind of inside-out twisty feel if that makes any sense at all... Gonna take me about an hour to learn the fingerings but 2 lifetimes to get the feel!

Really awesome as always! As someone who has never used any synths... is there one that you would recommend to get started? Would you rather use a real synth with built in sounds or use software with a midi keyboard controller?
@emersongeorge4560

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought an F9 chord (or any X9 chord) by definition and in practice is to include the dom.7th . To obtain the voicing you have here, without an Eb, the symbol would be Fadd9/A. Otherwise, someone not reading the exact grand-staff, perhaps a guitarist, might include the dom.7th, Eb, and really alter the intent. Which, buy the way, is tremendously appealing and ultra hip. (Do people still say "hip" anymore? I dunno.)
@groovewindow
@groovewindow 3 жыл бұрын
yep - absolutely! I even knew it but was arguing with my software to get the right symbol.... and just gave up :facepalm: -- I may head back and take another crack at it because that F9 definitely indicates the dom 7th which is not the right thing here. I still say "hip" :)

I came by accident, and found this is what I'm looking for. Is funk-jazz-groove a good description? I've neurological problems, and haven't 'practiced' playing keyboards - and never in this 'style'. But I wish to compose - or finish ideas from orchestral, swing, ethnic, latin etc. I 'stumble' on note combinations with no idea of how 'chord progressions' are 'supposed to go'. I was 'tutored' long ago about the bass note not being necessarily in the same chord, and more recently see about 9th, 11th, 13th etc. as well as leaving out notes when four or five note chords are indicated. Without being able to play proficiently, I record some things at half speed. I'm amazed that today, Cubase even plays wave files at half speed. I'm not keen on the 'note correction' that keeps notes within a chord, or the advertised KZbin stuff that provides folk with 'chord progressions'. However, I suppose there are well-practised progressions and endings that become 'instinct' or learnt. The 'problem' may be with quantisation - though there is a capture percentage that can be used. The 35% swing though - isn't uniform is it? The 'feel' would change within a bar, with some notes having more 'swing' than others? SO, perhaps that means learning to play better - so that it sounds 'human', rather than by a machine. I've just added some 'Bach' to an 'Arabic tango', and this was what I needed to go back and modify the rhythm and add the light/off-beat chromatic notes, or is that 'passing notes'? I must used the pitch bend too, and those 'ornamentations'. Thanks.

I was looking for tutorials on funky piano BUT when you have a bass guitar playing along. All lessons I find are with the piano playing the bass line, which would obviously clash... Any tips? Do I just play the rootless voicings? Ok got to the second part of the video and that does give me some pointers ;)
