On just a ¼ acre of land, Niva and Yotam are starting a regenerative revolution.
Fed up with unsustainable agricultural practices contributing to the global soil crisis, this pair went from strangers studying environmental studies to husband and wife farmers. Now, from a sloping land previously thought to only be good for sheep to graze, they are producing 10,000 kg of fresh vegetables and supporting a diverse ecosystem with their no-till and no-dig practices. In their talk, Niva and Yotam share their vision for the future of feeding the planet; one where agriculture is democratised, fresh chemical-free vegetables are accessible and future generations are nourished with sustainably-grown food.
From self-proclaimed “young and naive” environmental science students to farmers and co-founders of Pakaraka Permaculture, Niva and Yotam Kay are revolutionising food-growing practices worldwide. From their ¼ acre farm on the Coromandel Peninsula, they produce over 10,000 kg of fresh vegetables to be sold at local markets, shops and cafes as well as through made to order veggie boxes. Pakaraka Permaculture also operates as an education centre to advocate for and share sustainable farming practices. In addition, Niva and Yotam share their learnings via online courses and their best-selling book “The Abundant Garden.”

This is excellent and very much like Charles Dowding and his no dig method. For anyone interested he has a very informative you tube channel. Well done to all concerned. I will definitely look at “forking” rather than digging/ tilling. It makes so much sense.

I bought a home that has lots of building rubble under the ground and just to make it worse there is Kikuya grass as well. I have to dig it out to clear the garden patch in my back yard. Hard work, but I started in August 2021 and have had satisfactory harvests so far. I use the square foot gardening method there and in my front yard I am slowly growing a food forest. It's nice to know that there's no pesticides used and I share a bit with some insects, but I get the greater share any way.

10 metric tons of food for 1/4 acre is insanity. It is almost impossible to reach that level of density with just potatoes (10-20 tons per acre). I'm extremely impressed to say the least.

It's 10,000 kg. That's 2.2 lb x 10,000. 22,000 lbs on 1/4 acre is amazing tho.

I have the land to do this x4, but unfortunately physically I would be doing this alone and I would struggle. Also financially setting this up stops me. I so wish to produce food like this for myself and the community, 😢
