I just purchased a baby Monstera on Etsy that had 2 leaves. I put it in some potting mix with coconut coir. In the month I've had it, it has unfurled one new leaf that is as big as the first two leaves combined! It was so exciting to watch! I don't have good natural light at my apartment, but I have it under a couple of aerogarden lights. The new leaf is already pregnant with another leaf, which is so exciting! I'm moving soon, and part of my home search priorities is a large window for an eventual large Monstera plant. 😂

When repotting can i trim the root ball. Can i cut several leaves from the same stalk as long as it has a root nub and propogate. So i hadv1 stem with 3 leaves. I cut each one with a node and ended up with 3 pieces.
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can can lightly trim the root ball. Was your goal to keep it in the same size pot? As far as propagating, all you need is one node like you described. You can also propagate right on the plant by air layering. You can wrap moist sphagnum moss around the node (I'm sure roots are already visible there) and wrap it in clear plastic wrap and secure both ends. This way the roots will start to grow but it is still attached to the plant and lessen the stress. But if you made cuttings already, all you need is a node and you should be fine. You can place directly in soil or water propagate. Keep me posted with your progress!

I've had my Monsterra for at least a year or two now. It continues to have a lot of new growth but none of the leaves have got very big in size (even though the overall plant is large). Would pruning some of the new growth help the older leaves increase in size?
@OhioTropics

That will be too much direct sun for your Monstera. You should move it back a few feet from the window in that case, or maybe use sheer curtains to diffuse the light. They definitely don't want to be sitting in sun all day!

How long after bringing the monstera home, would you repot? Also i have the plant sitting on a plant tray with rocks to catch water that comes through, which is supposed to help with humidity. I've had it for a week or so and it seems to be happy in the nursey pot.
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends. Your plant might be fine in the pot that it is growing in for a while. In other cases, you may need to repot sooner. Regardless, you should still wait a couple weeks for your plant to adjust to your home before doing anything. Unless your plant is very pot bound, I would leave it in the pot that it came in for now.

@rish_e4665
@rish_e4665 4 жыл бұрын
@@OhioTropics Yes, when it is rainy season, like it is now in southeast Asia. It takes around two days for the soil of the plant to completely dry out. So do you suggest that i change my potting mix to a more porous one? I normally use river sand and small amount of perlite to increase porosity in my potting mixture.

I have a north facing window and my monsters sits right in front of it, but it’s growing really slow, is it not getting enough light?
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on the size of the window, it may need more light. If it's growing very slowly, like you mentioned, it probably needs a bit more light. If you have a location that will get a couple hours of direct sun or so (like an Eastern window) or even a Western window, this would be a wonderful location for your plant. Even if you have a super sunny window (I wouldn't advise keeping this plant in full sun), you can also set the plant a little further back from the window. Experiment with your growing location and see how your plant responds! Hope this helps :-)

What about humidity? Do you every spray or mist your monstera? Humidifier?
@OhioTropics

I don't do a thing for my Monstera for humidity actually. It is very tolerant of average indoor conditions. Nor do I run a humidifier for it. Mine sits in our living room so I don't want to clutter it up with a humidifier. I do run a humidifier when we run our central heat though in our sunroom. But if you'd like to run a humidifier for your Monstera, that's fine! I don't mist because that does nothing for humidity, contrary to popular belief. I've never been able to get aerial roots to grow on my Monstera nor Ficus plants but I want them badly b/c I think they're beautiful. Thank you for the informative video. There is so much contradictory information out there. One thing I keep coming across is people referring to Monstera and Philodendron Swiss Cheese plant as the same plant, and I don't believe they are. What are your thoughts on that?
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 4 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! Common names are VERY misleading. Philodendron is a completely different genus of plants from Monstera. And Swiss Cheese plant is also confusing too because it is referring to Monstera. So combining Philodendron Swiss Cheese as a name makes absolutely no sense and just serves to confuse people. Adewole olumide I have found that my monstera deliciosa don’t like to be wet, mine like to be dry before I water them. I would highly suggest that you repot it into one with drainage holes and determine from there how much water your plant likes. I would not go up in size of the nursery pot as that could stunt their growth - they love to be root bound before repotting!
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 4 жыл бұрын
I would definitely repot it into a pot that has a drainage hole. A good rule of thumb is to water when the surface is dry to the touch. You can maybe let the top half inch or inch get dry, and then water thoroughly. But yes...you absolutely need to place it in a pot with a drainage hole!

I have a peperomia obtusifolia that's a good 15 ft away from my west facing window and it's just been exploding with growth since the start of spring. My pholodendron and Scindapsus also prefer medium light, as they scorch when put near the window. Totally agree with the monstera! Mine is right in front of the west facing window and thrives.

You're absolute right Kenny..I prefer to "teach" to always have plants in front of windows for beginners that are new to houseplant growing. After all, you have to know the rules before you can break them, right? Sounds like you have a good grasp on light, and that's a huge step! :-).

I got two of these... repotted them together (with miracle grow) into a well draining ceramic planter... I let it dry out up top before I water it... it has not grown a bit in 8 months. All my other plants are doing great. My fiddle fig is even out growing this thing and I don't get it. Maybe Mines a dud

Hi Reece, let's figure it out together. What is the light situation where you have your plant? (Window exposure, distance from the window, etc.). Are you fertilzing?
@rgriffith6476
@rgriffith6476 2 жыл бұрын
@@OhioTropics Tons of light, tons of fertilizer. By tons of fertilizer I of course mean like once every 2 months or maybe a little more. I wound up repotting them separately and they all started to put out new growth... Then It was a beautiful day and they wanted to play outside, and I forgot, and.... Well... I bought new, bigger ones!

Can I keep it out under the sun?
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 2 жыл бұрын
These plants don't like tons of direct sun outside. Shade or partial sun will be best outdoors for these plants. If you're moving a plant from indoors to outdoors, you will have to gradually acclimate it to sun otherwise it will burn. So go slow...and move it into full shade for a few days at first and gradually increase the amount of sun. Good luck!

I have this idea of having a huge, sprawling Monstera in the corner of my room, and I'm considering getting 3 of the Monsteras from the store, and then maybe using a 35 gallon hexagon aquarium with drainage holes drilled in the bottom and putting all three in there. I can't find videos of people consolidating Monsteras, but if the pot was big enough, is there any reason it's inherently inadvisable to put them all together? If it is possible, I'm also considering buying a cutting from a _giant_ Monstera online and maybe putting it in the middle, so once it finally grows it'll start shooting off some giant leaves as well, would this step _also_ be possible? I know this is a really specific, speculative question but you seem like about as much of an expert on Monsteras as there on here is so I figured I'd try to get your opinion if I could. Thank you so much!

@OhioTropics 2 жыл бұрын
Hi MC! You absolutely can do this! The only thing I would recommend, since you'd be using a 35 gallon container to plant them in...is to make sure that your potting mix is very chunky. Due to the big volume of the aquarium, you want to make sure that you have exceptional drainage and that your mix can dry out in a reasonable amount of time. I would recommend maybe equal parts of an all-purpose potting mix, orchid bark, and perlite. Also make sure that your drainage holes are big enough so that they won't get clogged. I would add more drainage holes than you'd initially think. Do you have good light in the corner that you want to put your aquarium in? If it's a darker corner, you may want to supplement with a grow light. I hope this helps and don't hesitate to ask anymore questions.

I respectfully disagree with your recommendation to not buy a moisture meter. They are great for beginners. It’s less about telling you if the soil is moist but more to prevent you for over watering and killing your plants with kindness. I tell new plant parents to get moisture meters. They are only $8.
@OhioTropics

Thanks for chiming in and being respectful with your comment. :-) I have seen some of them work properly, but I know many people personally who have used them, and their particular instruments were very faulty. This is why I don't personally recommend them. It can be a good tool in the beginning, but getting used to judging soil moisture by feel, touch, sight, etc., in my experience and opinion, will be more valuable in the long-run.
