Try putting one of the split leaves philodendrons outside under a tree for the Summer. Doing so will give you a much bushier/compact plant. The one I put outside looks like a shrub ....one happy plant. A little story: When I was a kid, my mother had a split leave growing on a pole in the family room. She would have to cut the top off from time to time because it would hit the ceiling. Before we moved to another state my folks gave the plant to some friends. Several years latter, when we went back to visit we found that they had removed it from the pole and attached it to their staircase. ....The damn thing grew up the staircase to the second floor and across the banister on the second floor landing. It was a bit gangly but was a site to behold.

I bought a cutting from a website that pretty much said "throw it straight in soil" and while you probably could do that and it would be fine, I have my reservations as I do want to keep taps on it, at least for a few weeks to make sure its growing roots without having to constantly disturb it, so I'll follow your steps here and try to propagate it in water first. Then it should be ready for soil with new fresh roots by the end of the month or early next month. 😄

The water should be changed every two to three days for the reason that new water have much more oxygen for the roots. In fact, you can do an experiment where one cutting in the water without changing it and one in the water where you change it every two days, you will see much more roots on the water change and if you plan to grow it in the water permanently, the water should be changed every two to three days. You can also stick the cuttings straight into the soil, I have done it both ways, they are very easy to grow and propagate.
@TechplantChannel2 жыл бұрын
im doing that experiment right now where i changed the water every day and it didn't root, the one i left and never changed rooted crazily, i will make a video about it. I think as long as you have enough surface area the water will dissolve oxygen back into it from the air. I still need to do more tests tho. At a certain point tho when the roots are huge I bet you need to change the water often tho cuz the natural dissolving into the water wont keep up. i gotta test this tho

@@heatherklatt5083 After I struggled with rotten seeds, rotten cuttings, etc I started sterilizing ALL of my media in the microwave. Rooting in water? I boil the water first and I wipe out the container to be used with a sanitizing ratio solution of bleach. Then I clean my scissors or razor with fire, alcohol, or bleach depending on the closest method, and I make a clean cut on the bottom before putting the cutting into the water. For sphagnum moss I put some into a bowl or cup and thoroughly soak it with water. Then I microwave it until it reaches 200*F or more measured with a thermometer. I let it cool and then use it instead of water in the exact same above processes. Soil is the same; put it in a bowl and microwave it until it reaches over 200*F on a thermometer and then allow it to cool before planting your plant or cutting into a freshly sanitized pot. The surface of the moss may get moldy as time goes by and you can treat it by misting it with hydrogen peroxide. Dilute your standard medical grade 3% H2O2 solution with 1 equal part of water so it's a 50/50 mix, and then lightly mist the top of the moss column in the container to kill mold spores that have started growing on the surface. Don't spray too much, but it won't be the end of the world since the dilute H2O2 won't hurt most plants. If you find that your cutting has rot on the end, start over from square one. I've recently been putting cinnamon powder on the cut wound of a cutting with end rot after I've sterilized a blade and cut the end off at a point above the rot where the plant is still nice and healthy. :) Hope this helps.

Was thinking of propagating m.deliciosa and trimming off aerial roots but wasn't confident in doing so (since im newbie). Glad I found your video. It was really helpful.

Great video! I just re-potted my monstera last week because it was outgrowing its pot similarly to yours, but on a smaller scale. How long have you had that monstera for it to have grown that much?

Love all your videos! Bet you've heard it a million times, but your vids are very detailed and to the point! I am new to moss and would like to try propagating in it, how and how often do i water it? Also, do i have to cover the top of the cup with cling film? (I do that with perlite propagations)
@TechplantChannel4 жыл бұрын
for smaller stuff i might use some cling wrap or if its drying out way too fast but for most things i leave the top uncovered. Usually I pour water into the cup. give it like a min, then pour out the excess water. Then i let it slowly dry over like 3-4 days ( this changes based on your environment) and when its just starting to get dry but still damp, I add water again. I do that so some air can get down in there a bit so it doesn't rot on me. This is my method for monstera and other bigger aroid stuff.
