It is a good idea to put a ‘sleeve’ of masking tape on one side of the razor blade. You’re less likely to nick yourself. When the unmasked blade gets blunt, just ‘sleeve’ the blunt side with masking tape...and remove the tape from the unused blade. Great video, clear and succinct, well done! Thanks

I bought a cutting from a website that pretty much said "throw it straight in soil" and while you probably could do that and it would be fine, I have my reservations as I do want to keep taps on it, at least for a few weeks to make sure its growing roots without having to constantly disturb it, so I'll follow your steps here and try to propagate it in water first. Then it should be ready for soil with new fresh roots by the end of the month or early next month. 😄

Try putting one of the split leaves philodendrons outside under a tree for the Summer. Doing so will give you a much bushier/compact plant. The one I put outside looks like a shrub ....one happy plant. A little story: When I was a kid, my mother had a split leave growing on a pole in the family room. She would have to cut the top off from time to time because it would hit the ceiling. Before we moved to another state my folks gave the plant to some friends. Several years latter, when we went back to visit we found that they had removed it from the pole and attached it to their staircase. ....The damn thing grew up the staircase to the second floor and across the banister on the second floor landing. It was a bit gangly but was a site to behold.

The water should be changed every two to three days for the reason that new water have much more oxygen for the roots. In fact, you can do an experiment where one cutting in the water without changing it and one in the water where you change it every two days, you will see much more roots on the water change and if you plan to grow it in the water permanently, the water should be changed every two to three days. You can also stick the cuttings straight into the soil, I have done it both ways, they are very easy to grow and propagate.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 2 жыл бұрын
im doing that experiment right now where i changed the water every day and it didn't root, the one i left and never changed rooted crazily, i will make a video about it. I think as long as you have enough surface area the water will dissolve oxygen back into it from the air. I still need to do more tests tho. At a certain point tho when the roots are huge I bet you need to change the water often tho cuz the natural dissolving into the water wont keep up. i gotta test this tho

I’ve been propagating cuttings with large leaves. (Leaves at widest point are probably about a metre) and every time I tried to propagate, Usually water the aerial roots rotted so good to see I can cut them off! Will try again!!!

good luck, yeah that brown layer that gets on them just seems to allow bacteria to start chomping away!

Hello! I'm new to propagation and I have a couple questions... what are your thoughts on root hormone for cuttings? And secondly, would a really sharp, disinfected pairing knife work well? I don't want to butcher my monsterra, but I don't want to lose a finger in the process either...

Definitely one of the best plant guides I've found. Well filmed and easy to follow. I have trimmed my monstera, and am growing out the roots in water which is coming along well. However, the leaves are drooping a bit more everyday, and I'm not sure what I could do to 'destress' the plant. Any tips?

is it getting good light? Mine were sitting under strong lights for 15 hours a day. also maybe check your water and makesure there isnt a huge swing in either direction with the PH value

How often did you wet yet moss?? When it was completely dry on top?? I am rooting my first albo monstera in moss! Your video inspired me to do it your way. It’s only been 7 days on a heat mat... any advise is greatly appreciated ❤️🍃

i let it do wet and damp cycles if that makes sense. i try not to let it get bone dry, but let it get just a tad bit dry so it can breath, then wet it again. dont keep it constantly soaking wet! Good luck i hope yours does well, make sure it gets good light too!

@@heatherklatt5083 After I struggled with rotten seeds, rotten cuttings, etc I started sterilizing ALL of my media in the microwave. Rooting in water? I boil the water first and I wipe out the container to be used with a sanitizing ratio solution of bleach. Then I clean my scissors or razor with fire, alcohol, or bleach depending on the closest method, and I make a clean cut on the bottom before putting the cutting into the water. For sphagnum moss I put some into a bowl or cup and thoroughly soak it with water. Then I microwave it until it reaches 200*F or more measured with a thermometer. I let it cool and then use it instead of water in the exact same above processes. Soil is the same; put it in a bowl and microwave it until it reaches over 200*F on a thermometer and then allow it to cool before planting your plant or cutting into a freshly sanitized pot. The surface of the moss may get moldy as time goes by and you can treat it by misting it with hydrogen peroxide. Dilute your standard medical grade 3% H2O2 solution with 1 equal part of water so it's a 50/50 mix, and then lightly mist the top of the moss column in the container to kill mold spores that have started growing on the surface. Don't spray too much, but it won't be the end of the world since the dilute H2O2 won't hurt most plants. If you find that your cutting has rot on the end, start over from square one. I've recently been putting cinnamon powder on the cut wound of a cutting with end rot after I've sterilized a blade and cut the end off at a point above the rot where the plant is still nice and healthy. :) Hope this helps.

Yup it does! Just remember if you take very big cuttings the mother plant won't use as much water since there is less plant to consume it

Honestly, I never ever comment on videos, but this was the most helpful explanation of all (and I take a lot of pride in my Googling skills), so thank you. ❤️ I do have one question, tho: my monstera’s about 3 years old, but it grew super leggy (probably because I kinda helped it out a bit with a wooden dowel?) and has lost all of its bottom leaves, and now it refuses to look, well, like yours... Is there anything I can do or should I just accept it, maybe propagate it and hope that the next generation won’t be this obsessed with heights? Hahaha Also, why does this happen anyways? I’m on my 3rd dowel now and the thing is about 4 feet tall with a tiny new leaf starting to unfurl right on the very top. Send help!!!
@TechplantChannel

im not sure how much light its getting, but you could give it more, also if the pot is small the root structure will only be able to support so many leaves so maybe it needs a bigger pot. IF you get brave i have a video where i propagate pothos nodes that dont have any leaves, that method would work for monstera too, if you take the leafless nodes and put them in a perlite sphagnum mix with moisture in a bag they will root and make a new leaf!

Ahh, thank you for replying! If anything, I think it was getting far too much direct sunlight in the afternoon, poor thing. I hadn’t realized how much until quarantine started and being home all day everyday, rather than once a week, became a thing. But yeah, I totally agree that it needs a bigger pot, it’s definitely on the list for next week. I’m gonna watch your video and if it’s not too terrifying I might give it a go. Fingers crossed! 💚

Love all your videos! Bet you've heard it a million times, but your vids are very detailed and to the point! I am new to moss and would like to try propagating in it, how and how often do i water it? Also, do i have to cover the top of the cup with cling film? (I do that with perlite propagations)
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 4 жыл бұрын
for smaller stuff i might use some cling wrap or if its drying out way too fast but for most things i leave the top uncovered. Usually I pour water into the cup. give it like a min, then pour out the excess water. Then i let it slowly dry over like 3-4 days ( this changes based on your environment) and when its just starting to get dry but still damp, I add water again. I do that so some air can get down in there a bit so it doesn't rot on me. This is my method for monstera and other bigger aroid stuff.
