Hydro seeded my 2.5 acres with Sahara Bermuda 5yrs years ago and over seeded with rye to hold the soil in place until Bermuda got established. No issues from the rye that I could tell. I was fortunate to have a well with a full irrigation. I use the pro plugger and it works great to fill-in the bare spots that you always end up with a project this size. Looking forward to following the progress!

I agree. It looks good as well in the summer. I cut mine short to start it and feed it.

Looking like it's going good Jason, I knew and heard about 419 I think that will work nice for you. Didn't know you couldn't start that from seed tho, learned something new! I like that pro plugger too, transplanting from one place to another is something I thought about doing on my own yard. Keep watering!
@lawncarelife5 жыл бұрын
I sure could use some heavy rain. I will probably use the pro plugger a lot next year

looks like your off to a good start Jason. I have the pro plugger also, and it should help to transplant once your off and running. Jason, hope you can take some constructive criticism; Seems like your rushing this project a bit. Lots of sticks and roots left in that back area that could have been raked out first. But Im guessing your rushing to get it done for this year so you have a jump on things next year. Hope that rain showed up and you got the well going. My biggest fear would be a muddy mess this fall and next year in early spring if lots of rain shows up. I think overseeding with the winter rye will help with that. I look forward to following along for this renovation. Speaking of renovations...the landscaping around the front of the house filled in great...looks good! Have a good weekend.

Finally, one thing that you may benefit from is guys who are laying sod always have a few left over. IN the course of time, they coudl bring you half pallet here and there and you would be surprised how far that would go. Would have to be patient and take it little at a time. If I were you, I'd go nuts witeh that pro plugger up in that zoysia burm right now. Peak growing time. can't get that much success by plugging when it's dormant.

You didn't mention if you applied any Fert? Just wondering if you did and what kind? Thx...will follow your project...I seeded centipede last year in August and man was it slow to spread...it's about 80% centipede and 15% common Bermuda 5% weeds due to not adding any kind of pre-emergent...kinda wish I went with Zoysia due to it growing under and on top of the soil. But o well my lawn looks nice now and will attack the weeds next year. Good luck 👍🏼

Wow Jason, I have not all , 3 acrea of dirt, but, about 2 acrea of grass mixed rye, zoysia , Bermuda, I have done it dragging a concrete block behind my mower! But I think, when you get the Water going that will give you what your looking for. I put in gravel side paths /side walks ,1 bucket at a time, I just dont have the energy or the money to make it look like a golf course. Drink lots of Gatorade Jason's Family!

If you have irrigation you can water in 1/4 lb of Nitrogen per week until mid to late September maybe even later in your area. This will make the 419 run out. Next year spray with Primo Maxx and it will spend its energy filling in instead of vertical growth. Winter rye will be fine. It will kill off on it's own when the heat kicks in next season.
@juliocs54835 жыл бұрын
Can the primo maxx be used on centipede as well so it can spread like you mentione here? Thx

I would never attempt that big of an area here in Texas during August. Triple digit temps all week and it never rains on your lawn during summers here. Last year I had a grand total of 1/4" of rain over a 3 month period in June, July and August. Almost lost all my fish in my farm pond. I had to feed them so they would live. Pond was about 2 feet deep and its normally over an acre when full and 12 feet deep. Hope you get more rain than we do. I have some tifway 419. It spreads really slow compared to my other Bermudas. It's a popular grass in my area. The Princess 77 and Celebration are my fastest spreaders
@littlefinkle77575 жыл бұрын
Celebration Bermuda is being used by collegiate and professional athletic field caretakers. High maintenance but exceptional resistance to traffic and spreads like fire.
@jamesbarron12025 жыл бұрын
@@littlefinkle7757 Celebration does great under all my pecan trees where other bermudas won't grow. I layed it in all the bare spots under the trees and it took off with lots of watering. I live by 4 turf farms. The guys that carry the Celebration told me it's their fastest spreading grass. St. Augustine is my fastest spreading grass but nobody sells it local and it needs too much water for my area. I have different bermudas, zoysias and St. Augustine in my lawn. The wide bladed Zoysias are my favorite for looks if kept watered. I hate the fine blade zoysia varieties. Have those also. They brown and roll up too easily with drought. Bermudas perform best in my dry climate
@greeneracre11515 жыл бұрын
Jason, I wish you the best. In my climate it would have been better to just plant rye and then kill it off in the spring to start my Bermuda grow in.

Jason, I have that same plugger. works good, but a golf course hole cutter works way better. Good luck on your lawn! should be amazing!
@2shoestoo5 жыл бұрын
Hope the best for you Jason. In my opinion doing this in August could be tough I think planting in September your chances would be better. All I can say is water, water, water. I had 16,000 sf of Bermuda sod installed last December and some areas have done real well and a lot of bare spots in some areas that just won’t take. Going to have to over seed late next spring.
@juliocs54835 жыл бұрын
Don't overseed...use the pro plugger so you can have the same grass type...I've heard of people doing the overseed and the grass doest match...just my opinion though...good luck 👍🏼
@2shoestoo5 жыл бұрын
julio CS yea that makes sense. I might just purchase enough sod and fill in the bare spots. I think a lot of the problem is the installer did not do any prep on the soil like add compost in. It’s just all hard clay.

if it were me, I would have flattened with the bobcat blade, then used a scarifier to work the dirt up real good, then broadcast my plugs, THEN run the scarifier back over it well - THEN used a cultipacker to flatten it out again!!! Please consider this method next year if you are not happy with how this works out.

I’m thinking about completely starting over with my lawn. I have some type of fungus in my lawn. I get half circle dead spots popping up all through my yard. Any recommendations on how to get rid of this.

I read something today that said perennial rye puts off a toxin in the soil that will kill Bermuda. Not sure if that’s true but I wondered if the same applies for annual if true?

Love watching this transformation. In restoring my Bermuda lawn, I am one year into what you are doing right now. And I'm also experimenting with some Zoysia and St Augustine on my side yards. You ought to check out some of my videos, seeing as I learned a lot from you anyway starting about a year-and-a-half ago. Let me know what you think, if it doesn't bore you to tears.

Now put you a shit ton of Lime bud. Try to get you some that Quick release Lime from Pennington fast acting. My Bermuda took off like it was on fire...lol. I struggle for a few seasons till i got the PH right
@mikewest7125 жыл бұрын
My lawn was the victim of that very idea. Cost way more money to add acid back to a lawn after it has been over limed. Our Arkansas soil runs about 6.0-6.5, so ph is a little off. Just dont go to far.
@littlefinkle77575 жыл бұрын
Before liming he needs a soil test and he knows that. My soil required 0 lime. Test the soil before each season and you will save lots of money wasting unnecessary ferts and/or lime. Ag lime last longer, takes longer to get the effect but once it kicks in it is longer lasting that pelletized lime.
@foxiedogitchypaws71415 жыл бұрын
James, are you in Alabama? I see lime and I don't know if I need it or what to look for if I do need it. Thanks
