I saw this post last night, and I’ve been waiting all day to finally sit and watch it. Persimmons are quickly becoming one of my favorite fruits, and I cannot wait until my two trees get as large and full as yours. There are a lot of astringent Asian varieties as well. My ‘Giombo’ is an Asian cultivar and has some of the largest fruits in circulation, but it is one of the few persimmons that blooms early and can be a frost risk, unfortunately.

The Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) tree is a native plant here in southern Ohio, and they are very large trees - up to 50' tall. The fruit is delicious after a couple fall frosts, and they make some wonderful Persimmon Jam. The hard part is harvesting enough of them before the Raccoons get them.

Good to know. I'm out of S. OH as well and just moved into my homestead last week. I have trees growing in 5 gallon buckets at my old place to start an orchard. I'm new at this and was wondering if it's too late to plant them now. My move in date was delayed 9 times because of supply chain issues during the build hence, the trees aren't planted. Do you post videos?
@ohio_gardener

@@resourcefulgirl No, it isn't too late as long as the ground is not frozen. If you would like to get some native Persimmon tree seedlings, check with your County Extension Office about their tree sale next spring to see if they will include the Persimmon.

James, your enthusiasm and passion for gardening are infectious. A lot of things about KZbin make me a bit jaded and pessimistic about the platform, but every now and then a channel like yours comes along and reminds me of the potential of KZbin and how it gives a platform to born educators and entertainers to do what they love best for a wide audience. Keep up the great work.

Nice harvest with some really good information on branch angle and pruning. I've found persimmon wood to be brittle and the braches break easily rather than bending, so it's important to thin a heavy crop or support the branches. Regarding pests, my biggest issue is mammals. I have to harvest my Fuyu and Haichiya before they're ripe or the raccoons will do a lot of damage to the branches. Persimmon freeze really well and are excellent in smoothies with the frozen persimmon adding amazing richness. As a matter of fact, I was drinking one as this video dropped along with freshly harvested pomegranate. 😋

You have the nicest soil Ive ever seen.. I'd like to know what those white chunks are in your soil? Pummice? Course perlite? I've been having garden destroying Northern Corn Rootworm Beetles(mostly pure green non striped) infest my garden for the last 3 years and it's making me want to give up on gardening. They eat every flower that isnt marigold but also sit on those plants as well. They seem to LOVE petunias, dahlias, and zucchini flowers..... I haven't had a good harvest of tomatoes or peppers since they came. I've tried growing zucchini 3 years in a row and haven't gotten a single one. Two different varieties but I think its because of those stupid wisconsin bugs that came down into illinois(probably because the nearby monoculture corn farmers changed their seed type). I read that they like plants with lots of nitrogen more than others so I thought getting rid of my purple clover and summer alfalfa two years ago would help(I was growing those for my compost). It did not help.These bugs have made me hate gardening but I don't want to give up. There has to be some way to get them away from my garden... I also do not want to spray chemicals........ I've tried vinegar solutions and yeast solutions that don't do crap. I really don't want to use sticky traps either because last time I tried that I killed a lot of grasshoppers on accident. I never see grasshoppers destroying my plants so I don't like killing them. The variety of Northern Corn Rootworm Beetle I seem to have the most of is the non striped pure green colored one but sometimes I get the pure tan colored ones too.. Any ideas on how to make them go away??

Tree ripe persimmons taste heavenly. It's difficult for people who never tried to imagine. It is superior to mango, apple, pear, pineapple, orange, etc. It is super sweet, creamy, and has a fascinating persimmon fragrance. Unfortunately, they don't ship unless completely frozen. Unripe ones have bad taste and need up to 2 weeks to become sweet.

Agree! We have an astringent Fuju Persimmon tree here in Maryland, Zone 5. It’s about 10 years in the ground now (2022) and it might have been 2-3 year old tree when purchased. The last few years we have picked & enjoyed luscious, tasty fresh persimmon fruit in mid-November. We picked, skinned & froze our bounty & made persimmon pie this year for Thanksgiving. It’s now 27 Nov & there are about 75 beauties just about ready to pick. A few days of sub-freezing wxr & frosts made the big change. Bingo too on the leaves once they turn. Orange & yellow hues. Persimmon is a win, win, win. Easy to grow, little maintenance or water, scrumptious fruit. The taste - a combo of fresh mango & papaya!

I just ordered 6 fruit trees, one was a persimmon. Haven’t had tree ripe persimmons in a couple decades, so good spread on toast like jam.

I am curious what you do with all the fruit you get from five trees. What do you do with the leftover fruit?

@@yuliayulia2509 I make the pulp and share with friends, the rest are a feast for the birds. The blue jays seem to enjoy them.
