Jay is correct. The apical meristem is removed because they're protecting their investment. You'll need hormones to get side shoots. Possible in theory.

I’ve never seen a pineapple grow successfully with no leaves. I think the company might be trying to avoid this. You can also twist the top off, and peel four closest layers of roots off. Dry it out for 2 days, and then propagate roots in water. Guaranteed plant with most the leaves on.

I’ve tried this method and it won’t grow roots in water for me… probably because roots need oxygen. Looks like the top was cut off her pineapple to prevent buyers from regrowing. I’ve got 4 tops that I’ve left to sit dry on the windowsill for 2 weeks and 1 of them grew roots while sitting out.

Fortunately, mine only cost $6. Tasted like a regular pineapple with something else added but can't determine what it is. My hands did not have your regular pineapple fragrance after I washed my hands. Instead, it was similar to cotton candy. I will try to grow the top if possible.

I unload these from the ship in Texas and from what I was told is that they chop the top so that you can not regrow the pineapple. Did you ever get a plant to grow from the crown??

I've tried looking for pink pineapples with as much crown and leaves as possible to see if they would root and grow. I picked three that looked like possible candidates. They never rooted or grew at all. Maybe trying to sprout seeds then using plant growth rooting and growth hormones might succeed. There are other people on KZbin showing that a few seeds can sprout, but they didn't form roots for some unknown reason. This is where rooting hormone might be useful.

They don't cut all of it out though since it'd be too expensive and inefficient, there's still a bit left lol Even if that doesn't work, there's one seed in each cell (a fruit) of Pineapples. Although seeds genetically vary or sometimes revert to genetic parents, its viable for most herbs and perennials including Pineapples.
