Growing Aloe Vera from a single leaf can be a bit challenging because Aloe Vera generally propagates from offsets (babies) or from leaf cuttings that are already rooted. However, it’s possible to try growing Aloe Vera from a single leaf, although success rates can vary. Here’s a step-by-step guide to give you the best chance of success:
Materials Needed:
Aloe Vera Leaf (healthy and mature)
Potting Soil (cactus or succulent mix is ideal)
Small Pot or Container (with drainage holes)
Cutting Tool (sterilized knife or scissors)
Rooting Hormone (optional, but can improve success)
Water (for misting and watering)
Steps:
Select and Prepare the Leaf:
Choose a healthy, mature leaf from the base of the Aloe Vera plant. Avoid small or damaged leaves.
Use a sterilized knife or scissors to cut the leaf from the plant. Make a clean cut as close to the base as possible.
Let the Leaf Callus Over:
Place the cut leaf in a dry, warm area for about 3-7 days. This allows the cut end to callus over and helps prevent rot when planted.
Prepare the Pot and Soil:
Choose a small pot with good drainage. Cactus or succulent potting mix works best as it drains quickly.
Fill the pot with the soil, leaving about an inch of space from the top.
Apply Rooting Hormone (Optional):
Dip the callused end of the leaf in rooting hormone powder if you have it. This can help stimulate root growth but is not strictly necessary.
Plant the Leaf:
Insert the callused end of the leaf into the soil about 1-2 inches deep. Make sure it’s upright and stable.
Gently pack the soil around the base of the leaf to hold it in place.
Watering and Care:
Water the soil lightly and then let it dry out completely before watering again. Overwatering is a common issue, so it’s crucial to keep the soil on the drier side.
Place the pot in a bright, indirect light location. Direct sunlight can be too harsh and may dry out the leaf too quickly.
Monitor and Wait:
Be patient. It can take several weeks to a few months for roots to develop and for new growth to appear. During this time, avoid disturbing the leaf and keep the soil just moist enough to prevent it from drying out completely.
Transplanting (Optional):
Once roots have formed and you see new growth at the base of the leaf, you can transplant the new Aloe Vera plant into a larger pot if desired.

if you cut the leaf like you saw in this video, it will never root. Instead, try pulling the leaf sideways and remove the leaf exactly at it's joint with the mother stem, (which is actually what he did to the one he showed you with roots). Happy gardening to you all!

You shouldn’t have to do that though, people shouldn’t be tight and let people crap a cutting here and there. It’s not going to cost them anything or hurt their plants especially if they have heaps. I am so sick of how greedy people are these days. Ya never see anyone offering free cuttings to heirloom plants of any kind, they always trying to make money. I have 3 kinds of mint and I would happily let people have some clippings to them. I have peppermint, spearmint and normal mint u have with mint sauce for roast lamb etc I’m shattered I used to have my own aloe but it died one year when it got too wet and cold due to our crap cold weather. If I had kept it under shelter it would have been okay I’m sure. I have lost so many plants over the years that I used to have from non gmo og plants. But yeah just knock on peoples door and ask them, surely most people wouldn’t care if ya grabbed a cutting. It’s just ridiculous of people to say no if they have plenty of it growing. I mean I have rosemary and lavender too which I have had for years and I’m happy to help any one who needs cuttings if they live in Aus. I would appreciate the same back but I never seem to meet anyone who isn’t a tight ass.

@@natalieaaby7002 Yeah, sure! If when you say leaves, you mean offspring form the larger plant and they already have roots in, you can introduce it to a pot big enough, but not too big. Gently water it after being planted. If you're doing this with aloes, do NOT ever use fertilizer on them. They will burn. Theoretically, your plant should do fine after being planted. Good luck!

Guys this actually doesn't work well. The whole process is called propagation. You need to have the bit of the leaf that connects to the plant to be completely intact, cutting it off like that removes the part that callouses over, grows roots and eventually a new plant.

The color change is very common and is related to lighting, temperature and/or hydration. An aloe vera that is in bright direct sun, or that is dehydrated or exposed to cold temperatures often turns brown. They turn back to green when moved out of direct sunlight and/or watered.

Great! Now I'm going to repott my aloe. What if my older aloe looks bad, it's not grow up from few months, lower leaves are rotting (maybe I pour aloe too much, but now the soil is dry, and I water it rarely), also I don't see too much roots. Now I try to save my aloe as you show on this movie with some leaves which have been left....

1) That is not an aloe vera. That is another type of aloe plant. 2) You cannot propagate aloe from the leaves anyways. You must wait for them to put off pups or offsets, which those can come up from the growing medium or straight from the mother plant. 3) Please, please, please do not follow this tutorial.

This guy truly got the clicks he wanted. Guys, this would not work. You will just waste a good leaf if you follow this. 1st, propagation requires you to pull the leaf at the very base of the plant. It is hard to explain, the leaf will be slightly indented and will not be to moist. Most succulents evolved to be like this, if it is cut like how he did it, it will not grow. 2nd, this is not aloe vera, it is another type of vera plant, I don't know the type. The vera leaf still would not have grown though. 3rd, the most important thing to note. Aloe vera and most veras can not grow from a leaf! The only was to get another aloe vera is to wait until the mother plant grows a pup beside it or plant some of the seeds.

good sir Murray is correct. Aloe Ferox it is. I don't understand why people posting educational videos whilest knowing crap about the matter. + a small cut at the buttom of the leaf is enough to just gently remove the leaf, always the oldest first and better use a plastic/ceramic knife to avoid oxidation. would have been nice to see a video where one could see the leaf actually take root ... which it in my opinion never does. but anyways, this is isn't even aloe vera, same family yes, but other variety ... and also here it isn't possible to plant like this.

Not to be annoying, BUT - These are actually Aloe arborescens, a.k.a. bush aloes, not actually aloe vera. You can spot the difference at the start of the video; aloe arborescens have long stems, growing into 10 foot tall stalks. These plants in the video also slightly resemble Aloe ciliaris, a good species for shade and climbing up walls, fences, etc. But I'm pretty sure these are bush aloes. You'll often see these aloes growing along our socal freeways, in places where nothing else would root. We have tons here in San Diego, mainly along forgotten steep hillsides and roads. Some of these masses of plants are over 6-10' high; they are true ecosystems & communities within themselves, creating impenetrable homes for all small creatures in the area. Ironically not being a native species... "True" aloe vera, at least to me, is a low-growing, shrubby and compact plant... with lime-greenish leaves & white speckling, There is also a softer, peach-colored aloe called Aloe sinkitana. These are also used like Vera, and often sold as 'vera' in stores. They are different with pastel-yellow blooms, rather than the hot orange of regular vera. Not sure of the medicinal qualities of the aloe in this video (arborescens). I've heard some are actually not medicinal, and in fact, the opposite; irritating to the skin, with allergies in some people. sorry for botanical rant :-)

Aloe Vera plants can just grow well in anything soil even sand. My garden has over 100 of AV plants from one plant that I bought 2 years ago. They propagate with baby plants in their pots and I replant them over and over again. Many are over 3 feets tall. Need very little maintenance and water but sun.

Can confirm this works ... But why is your plant not putting off pups? That container might be too shallow . ALSO: aloe IS a rooting hormone ... use a leaf to make some "tea" and use it on any plant. if you soak some aloe in a bucket of water and then mush it up .. its like liquid gold for plants.
@ראלאדרי
@ראלאדרי 4 жыл бұрын
I feel I've ignored my Aloe Vera a lot, it once had flowered too, last year it would always go side ways. And yes my Aloe Vera has given rise to many baby plants, I've uprooted the healthy looking one's and given to many people including my younger brother, my sister-in-law, my neighbour who's a gardener himself, they love my Aloe Vera for its fresh colour and thick fleshy leaves. I just hate the smell of the Aloe Vera juice when taken out, hence I've never tried it for any medicinal purpose, but I've tried the juice as rooting hormone and it's done wonders, helping me replant so many other plants in my little garden. After seeing your video I feel I must respect my Aloe Vera more @t Plant Secrets
