How to grow and harvest Gladiolus with Northlawn Flower Farms
Also know as the "sword lily" gladiolus are easy to grow and make a wonderful cut flower.
- Plant corms 4 inches deep in full sun and well draining soil after all danger of frost has past
- Harvest when 2-3 blooms are open on a stalk

I can't tell you how much I love seeing your garden. It brings tears to my eyes that you have a garden dedicated to your grandmother. My grandmother was my best friend. My grandfather was the gardener. I helped him some as a kid. My grandmother always referred to all the flowers in the yard as "my flowers". It was funny to me that it was my grandfather who did all the work. She even cried once when my cousin mowed down her gladiolus. I have a hard time watching some of the walks in he garden because I get nauseated from the camera motion. So I listen and just catch glimpses as you identify the plants. I am in search of a lacecap hydrangea. I saw you have one. I have a customer (I own a window cleaning business) who has 3 in her garden. When I was trying to describe it to my daughter, I wanted to say it had Glitter in the middle. Hers are magically beautiful. Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden.

Thank you for this video. I have been cutting my glads wrong this entire time (waiting for most of the flowers to bloom). Please do more videos on how to cut and where to cut on the stem. Also when you dig up your glads show us how you store them. Love your informative videos.

Thanks so much Martha! What zone are you in? I've been experimented with leaving them in the ground here in 6b and I'm getting 95% coming back. I've always read zones lower than 8 should dig up and store, but in my personal experience it's not worth it in 6b - especially since the corms are so inexpensive.

Northlawn Flower Farms do u just leave them in the ground or do u dig them all up and separate the babies to put elsewhere? Im in zone 8 and am growing gladiolas for the first time. Years ago i left asiatic lilies in the ground. They came back smaller the next year and then not at all afterward. Do the baby bulbs end up using up all the resources and cancel out the big ones?

Hi Danielle, I have several glads that I left bloom out in the garden. I was wondering when it’s done blooming can I cut the stalk off or do I need to leave it and the leaves to rejuvenate the corn? Thanks for the educational video! And thank you for the book you sent me! I love it!

This spring I put a photo on Instagram about using the gladiolus until the bitter end. I love to leave them blooming in the garden. but when they are almost spent, I pick them, clean up the bottom spent flowers and let the tops open in a vase. It makes for a much shorter arrangement, but YOUR TOTALLY RIGHT...these flowers can be used in so many ways!

So it turns out I've had a yellow and red one growing in a pot that has a giant jade plant I got for free off the side of the road. I've always thought it was grass today but I've never been able to get to it to pull it out from the roots so I left it, about 2 years later it's finally flowered, and I've now discovered a new flower, so gorgeous!

I just discovered (and subscribed to) your channel - I'm really enjoying your content! I've never grown glads before this year, but on a whim I purchased a bag of 15 from Aldi for $2.99. I planted them in a side border garden that I don't tend to regularly. Was I ever surprised to see them recently, several feet tall blooming their little heads off! I hope Aldi carries them next year; I'll buy several more. (Love the background music, one of my favorite hymns. :-) )

Hi Danielle! I really enjoy your videos. I was wondering of you would ever consider doing a video on cut flower design for landscapes? I'm interested in adding more cut flowers into my landscape design but I'm a little lost on how to get started. Other than stem height and bloom color, I'm not really sure how to make my flower beds look nice. Since the flowers would be in the front yard I really want to a avoid a wild look and I'm not really sure how to do that. Perhaps you have a suggestion on which cut flowers have a neat foliage look, like gladiolus and hydrangeas? 😊

I used to sell them growing up at markets. I have seen them sold as individual stems but we always did it as bouquets. 8 stems per bouquet is how we did it. More than that creates a crowded vase in most cases. Fewer than that just never seemed full enough.
