I just harvested my first strawberry after being inspired to grow them by you and other home growers. It was only the size of a nickel and pretty deformed but it was very ripe and delicious. It's really something else to eat something you grew yourself. Thanks for showing people that they can do it too.

Just another tip, Paul Gautschi says in his videos the runner's will be your producers for next year, so every winter he covers the strawberries and by the time they bloom in spring/summer, that mulch has become great dirt and your runners come up strong and ready. Did this in my gardens and it worked great
@ThisIsYourOnlyWarning5 жыл бұрын
If you ever need wood chips, my husband is an arborist and they happen to dump near you. Well not too far at all, peach country to be exact. We’re in Camden county NJ, but he works in Gloucester county. Sicklerville/Turnersvill NJ. If you’re willing to meet up and bring your own collection bins, they will probably just give it to you.

I planted Fairfax, a variety from the 1920s known for unsurpassed flavor. They're relatively small, soft, incredibly juicy, and almost purple in color. They're impossible to ship any distance and if you put them in a basket the ones on the bottom get squashed very easily so they've practically gone extinct. I hope the chipmunks let me have a few this year (they don't fall for the red-painted rocks trick).

@Ripleyripper5 жыл бұрын
@@analeegarcia9388 Unfortunately they won't come true from seed--in order to enjoy the special qualities of 'Fairfax' you have to have a clone of that original plant from 90+ years ago. Here's a little more information about the variety: davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/95114 and here's the one source I know of for the plants: thestrawberrystore.com/heirloom-hybrid-fairfax

Hi James, your positive energy and passion are contagious! Your strawberries are amazing! Love your detailed instruction on planting on a cone, removing flowers, and everything in between! When we had the snowstorm in Texas, one of the things I really missed was access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We had some for a few days but then we blew through them in a few days. I had started several things from seed but nothing was quite ready yet. What you’re teaching, especially about redundancy and variety, is so important and meaningful.

The runners are why strawberries are so easy to propagate. In my garden I started out with a box of just 6 plants. I let them propagate with runners, and the next year I had all the strawberries I wanted: Over a hundred plants. Strawberries spread like weeds. But they are a lot easier to control due to their small root system.

James, have you done a video showing how you laid out your garden, like an on paper type of thing? What is your tree spacing in the old garden etc. I have watched a ton of your vids and have been attempting to do it by watching your vides and tracking where things are planted etc but just can't figure it out. I know you are busy with everything, and that a video going over that isn't really your style, but I would appreciate it as I am planning the layout of mine. Production might be higher in an orchard type rows setup, but I'm not sure I would like how organized that would look. Regardless, your vids are awesome, keep up the good work.

Inspirational, thanks. Here in NW-Europe we tend to plant new strawberries in late summer, and yes I'm highly anticipating fresh strawberries next spring. PS. I'm not really a fan of the two-handed harvesting method. As a kid I learned it the hard way, having to work in the field from when I was 12. We then pinched the strawberries off by pushing the thumbnail into the index finger. The falling berry is then caught (gently) with the other hand. At the beginning this method will hurt, but after a while your thumbnail will harden, and your skin thicken... also this is the best way of not damaging the tender berries.
