Hi I have recently brought a Areca palm I love it I keep it with my Calathea Orbifolio but the tips are browning I do most it daily but I have noticed some white stuff on the stem of one of them I’m not sure what it is

Hello Larry, Thank you for your wealth of information. I have a areca palm as the one you are holding in the video and I bought it about 6 months ago. Its now 09-08-16 and it had not grown more than 1 to 2 inches if so much since I got it. I am in SJ, CA and it still in the 70's during the days here so I have it under my fig tree along with all my other house plants. What are your thought?

The are both the the same Palms. Just people calling it Cane Palm or Sugar Cane Palm is because of the looks of the joints on it. The correct name is ARECA Palm. Hope that helps.

Probably a banana tree. I think you can find them in most plant stores relatively cheap.

I guess I just don't understand this plant. I grow tons of various plants with complete success. Arecas have proven near impossible for me. Every time I buy one it lasts no more than a month or two before it's leaves brown and the plant slowly dies. I just threw away my fifth attempt and this one was actually the largest i've grown, 2.5 feet tall. This plant is so baffling to me because how is it I can't grow this one plant. I've got an apartment full of 50+ houseplants and not a single one has a brown leaf of it. Arecas are the only ones that die on me. What's even more baffling is that I have a few 6 foot tall birds of paradise plants indoors and they're flourishing and i grew them from seed 4 years ago! So i definitely have a green thumb but with Arecas I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've pretty much given up on this plant.

I'm the same with the Kentland palm, here in England they are hard to get a hold of. It's the air, it's to dry. Must mist. Do not use tap water, but you can use tap water from 24 to 40hr later at room temperature. It could be that it's not in a bright place, use a light to give of indirect bright light.. He described the conditions for growing the Palm but yes you are correct he did not show you how to plant it and that is not really professional on his part.
