All my other vegetables have been grown based off your guides :) please help lol, even if I have to tweak the process a little.
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the comment. The process for cauliflower from sowing to planting is pretty much same as cabbage. Once planted, feed with a balanced fertilizer (such as 5-5-5) instead of nitrogen rich fertilizer. Also you might need to provide some support for the plants as they grow. I hope this helps and best of luck to you.

Either netting or I use neem oil mix to prevent. If you see the caterpillars, use B.T. natural bacteria solution. In any cases the best is to monitor and control them at early stages. These videos are so helpful. Just wondering what you do with the soil after harvesting? Can you get the roots out and use of for something else?
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
So glad you found my videos helpful. Yes, you can reuse the old potting soil by removing old roots from the soil and add fresh compost (composted manure, garden compost,...) and/or general purpose organic fertilizer for a new potting soil. A ratio of 1/3 to 1/2 fresh compost to the mix will work. I will try to post a video on reusing old potting soil in future. Thank you very much for your comment!

It can be applied as a liquid or powder and you can find several varieties certified as organic. You may also use garden netting to control caterpillars if you don't wish to use any pesticides. I try to avoid having pots sitting on the grass too. One of the best options is to use metal shelving units. You can have them on short legs, about 1 ft to elevate shelves from ground so grass don't get damaged. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

Glad you love my videos. Depending on the condition you are sowing seeds, you need to adjust light, heat, and mainly watering. I have tried (and failed) many times to find the best way that works for me. If your seedlings die after germination, probably it is due to “damping-off,” a fungal disease. Try to sprinkle some baking soda around the seedlings (not too much) and do not over water them. I hope this helps. Thank you again for visiting and Good Luck!

As soon as they pop out, I move them outside in indirect sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. But you sure can you grow light if needed. I usually don't have issues with the birds, they are actually helping us to get rid of worms and caterpillars. For pests, I check my plants regularly and spray neem oil mix or B.T. as I see first sign of damage. If you do not want to use any sprays, garden netting is a great option to protect cabbages. I’m a novice at gardening as in I haven’t even started yet but I was wondering, can this soil be reused to plant more cabbage later in the season? If I were to stagger when I started my seedlings, as one set is mature the next set will be ready to transfer to a grow bag, can I just use the same soil? I hope this isn’t a silly question
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
No such a thing as silly question specially when it comes to gardening😊. Actually I was asked this question many times so I posted a video on how to reuse your old potting soil check here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ3QkqWip9yZhqs . You sure can use the old soil but it needs to be rejuvenated. By the time you harvest the cabbages, the soil has lost its nutrients to grow healthy plants and it should be amended with fresh compost. As I showed in that video, you will need to add composted manure to make it rich. I hope this answers your great question. Happy gardening and thank you for getting in touch.

Great video start to finish.. what you doing for pest control because they look so prestine🙌🏿🇬🇧
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it. For pest control, I check my plants regularly and spray neem oil mix or B.T. as I see the first signs of damage. If you do not want to use any sprays, garden netting is a great option to protect cabbages. Birds around our garden seems to enjoy the caterpillars and are big help to get rid of them. hope this helps and thank you very much for your comment😊.

Hi. The pots are 12" deep, but any pot with at least 8" depth will work too. You can reuse the potting mix after harvest. Check my video here on how I do that kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ3QkqWip9yZhqssi=ylBCwbbhd8Y2OjCe . Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

what kind of composted manure did you use? your soil looks so nice, what exactly did you use to make it? peat or coir? do you have the white butterfly in your area? i have white butterfly, cats with cat poo, leaf miners, and tons of aphids in my area :( seems each year i get a new pain to have to deal with. this year its crows digging up my transplant starts!
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
I used chicken composted manure. And I usually use both peat moss and coir. If you that much of a bug problem, I suggest to use garden netting on your plants, it will also keep cats away. Thanks.

Yes, you might not get to the full head size if it is too hot before plants go to bolting. Hope you will find a heat-tolerant variety for your area. I haven't tried them but 'Green Boy' or 'Charmant' are two heat-tolerant varieties you may want to try. Thank you so much for your comment!

So o have a lot of cabbage growing and we are in July in southern Ohio.😱. Is there any advise that you can give me to help with the bolting?
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
I 'd say the best is to keep them watered and provide some shade for them. Cabbages do well in shades so avoiding hot sun would help. I hope the cabbages will do fine. Thanks for visiting!

Is there a soil temp they germinate best at? Is there an air temp they germinate best at or is needed? I really struggle on how far ahead to start planting to get the plants up to size. Im thinking its still too cold to start them even inside.
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
Generally cabbage prefers cooler growing temperatures, between 55-75F (13-24°C), optimum being 60-70F (15-21°C). In mild winters you can grow them Feb-Apr and Jul-Aug. If you have a cold winter, it is better to grow in May-June or start seeds indoor 4 to 5 weeks before last spring frost. Thank you for visiting!

do you recycle all your container soil by just amending with more composted manure and use again next season?

First I remove all roots and then I add fresh compost or sometimes fertilizers to reuse them. You don't have to wait until next season, once amended it can be used right away. Thanks.

How often do you use the neem (aphids) and bt spray (worms)? If you make some of the spray solution can I leave In my sprayer or should I dump it out and make a fresh batch each month or so?

The idea is to prevent and control. So you should start applying at first sings of infestation. For both I suggest to use every 2-3 days until gone. And it is better to make a new batch to be on the safe side. Thanks.
