I saved all the seeds and went to the long process, of putting them in the freezer, bringing them out after 3 months, cracking them open , soaking the seeds in peroxide and water. And planting them I now have over 29 cherry trees, also three apricot trees. And five avocado tree. I really enjoyed growing trees, from seeds.

I had a mature Benton and took it out. North VA here 7a. After years of watching brown rot ruin the entire crop, it finally got some kind of blight that went deep into the wood. I just gave up. One year I got some kind of black leaf disease that defoliated the entire tree later in the summer/fall. Oh and the Japanese beetles love this thing more than anything in a ten mile radius. Hopefully some of you all have better luck in the South with these.

@@Ripleyripper Cool! I have a tart cherry tree, strawberries, blackberries, boysenberries and raspberries. I also have two huge mulberry trees, one white and one purple. The birds will peck at a few of the cherries in the top of the tree, but mostly leave everything alone. I do hope this works for you as well. There is also a spray, I believe, that you can spray on the tree that tastes bad to the birds.
@karlsfoodforestgarden69633 жыл бұрын
But you will also get some added cross-pollination from the nearby trees. One of my friends hangs rubber snakes from his fruit trees. I wonder if that would work? My trees don't get much bird pressure, but they do get some. Still, with a healthy tree you will probably still have a lot of cherries for yourself.

You make nice and interesting video's. Keep up the good work. We have different experience with pruning cherry trees. If pruning cherries late, there are problems with gummosis. It is advised to prune after harvest until late summer and only on dry days. This way the tree has time to lock of the wounds before winter. Also leave about 1 to 2 branch diameters sticking out from the stem. This way cherries amputate the last part themselves and are better protected against disease. If you want stimulating growth, prune in or right after blossom time. We are in western Europe though. Also for the bare root planting, we prefer planting in autumn. When planting in spring, the trees need a lot more pampering or they will die. When planting in autumn, the roots have had time to settle and soil moisture levels are restored. We also have frost here of between -5ºC and -20ºC and the amount of tries dying is lower than planting in spring.

But we had a beautiful harvest this year, 10 members of our family were able to pick and take home and we were able to can and dehydrate as well as fresh eat. Delicious. Trader Joe's has cherry juice for reasonable prices. It's used for muscle recovery after exercise. I like to freeze cherries for a summer treat. I have 1 tree planted in a cramped location. I planted 2 cherry trees in Ala 6 years ago a rainier and black Tartarian, one died but I didn't know which variety. fast forward trough the years, tried a couple other trees that didn't make it still not knowing what the variety of tree lived. Two years ago I planted a bing which actually brought one cherry to the tree that is mature even though the young tree didn't really have any leaves on it. This year the young tree still didn't get any leaves but the branches are flexible, to my amazement I had about 10 cherries on the mature tree which appears to be a rainier, but the cherries are very small. I didn't do a very good job netting, next year I'll know better, it's a learning curve. I was left with only 2 cherries after after netting, the birds outsmarted me, and one of those 2 was half eaten or rotted (not sure), I picked those 2 and am going to try them this weekend. Would you happen to know why they are small (about the size of a marble? Also now that those cherries are grown is that the end of the cherries for this year or will more come along this year????

Hi James, I love cherries and have 5 trees. Every year, I get loads of blossom and loads of fruit but am lucky if I get a bowlful of fruit to eat due to bird predation. Like you, I bought a plastic owl as a deterrent and, let me tell you, it was a complete failure from the word go. The cherry nicking birds were completely impervious to the "owl" and carried on in their merry way. Have bought a load of bird netting and will try that this year.

That will happen until you get to a critical mass. Assuming you have two different varieties that cross-pollinate, eventually they will create more cherries than the birds can handle. I had the same experience for several years, but now the birds just can't keep up! 😉👍

I've heard that hanging rubber snakes (or something that looks like snakes) in a tree will scare some types of birds. I've also seen fake owls that people use, but I don't know how well they work.

Hi James - you mentioned buying trees from a reputable nursery. Are there any you recommend?

The CDs and other shiny things on the tree can really repel the birds BUT.... I found that it worked one year for a couple of weeks, the next year they seemed to get habituated very quickly and moved in hard. That might be in part because it was a year with a late frost that meant nearly no trees in the area had much fruit, so the birds were more desperate. Your idea of multiple strategies, and changing things up, will probably work better.

So envious of these trees! 🍒 My neighbor has a few, but the raccoons raid them. They are the reason I am so hesitant to pop in a few fruit trees. Your garden is looking great!
