How to Grow Chives Indoors - Starting seeds to transplant outside

How to grow chives from seed indoors in your window sill to later transplant outdoors. After a failed attempt to growing garlic chives with bad seed, I started a new batch of onion chives from fresh seed in the fall. I started them in cups in my windowsill to have them later grow in my outdoors garden.

Good morning. I just discovered your channel last night and I am devouring all your videos! I am from Newfoundland, Canada. We are an island stuck way out into the northern Atlantic Ocean. The most east you can go on the continent. Our growing season is short. Last frost is mid June and first frost mid to end of September. It's like gardening on your shoulder season all summer long. I am loving you content. While we get the cold winters, we have a lot of humidity. We were made for cottage gardens and your content is incredible insightful. Keep up the great job. Your shows are top notch.

I used my chive flowers to make a chive vinegar this summer. I got 2 cups of flowers, slightly mashed them in a mortar and pestle. I added the crushed flowers along with a few chopped leaves to white vinegar until they were covered. I let them steep for one month in a dark cool location. I strained them through a fine mesh strainer and cheesecloth into a dispenser. It makes a delicious vinegar. Next year I’ll use white wine vinegar as I think it might have a more delicate flavor.

Hi Siloe! There is another type of chive, called garlic chive. Their have white flowers and taste like garlic and have flat long leaves. Also you can eat the flowers of your chives. I use them for omelettes or in salads. You can also freeze them, leaves or flowers. I chop them and put in little freezer bags for use during winter! Another perennial you might want to try is French sorel. It’s leave are lemony tasting. Quite nice. The red vein sorel on the other hand is a bit bitter but you can boil it and the bitterness goes away. Also Egyptian onions or walking onion are a perennial green onion worth growing. It’s nice to plant once and enjoy for years to come.

I keep a gallon jar of pretty chive flowers on my shelf every year. I put them on salad in soup on cassaroles etc and sometimes I make a pretty steeped hot drink.

I absolutely love chives and remember eating them as a child underneath the staircase at Hatti Fitzpatrick’s house! She is no longer with us but I will keep that memory with me forever! I think that’s why I love onions and garlic so much as an adult!!😊🌱

Hi Siloe, your videos are pieces of art, can’t wait to see your next creation. Chives make great vegetable, too. Stir fried them with egg makes a quick and tasty meal. Chives are really easy to divide and transplant. We replaced most of our mondo grass with chives.

I've had the same experience old seeds and poor germination. Seeds I collect myself work much better and the plants seem to do better over all as well.

I have problem growing onion chives. Garlic chives is everywhere here so easy to get fresh seeds. I tried to sprout onion chives seeds 3x. I found 2 stores selling onion chives recently, a pot is arriving today. Next find fresh red Welsh onion seeds, i lost mine late last year. Currently i have Ishikura, Thai bunching onion, rakkyo, garlic chives and dragon beard chives. The last is so delicious :)

Have you ever tried eating their flowers? It's delicious and works especially well in salads or on a sandwich. Use the newer flowers. they become tough with time

I love chives! They are AMAZING at drawing pollinators....and so very beautiful to the eye. I grew them in a pot, about 3 years ago, and they come back every year. Unfortunately, they were very crowded and have really matured as far as the root system goes, so next Spring I will likely plant them in the ground. I also want to purchase some new seed to start more to add to the garden, because as you said: they add visual beauty to wherever they are planted! I was just wondering, though -- do you think they would grow indoors all year round, if in a sunny enough spot? I am thinking I may try that. This way, they are always at your disposal when you need them for cooking!

I suppose you could have chives growing indoors year round if you have a lot of solar exposure, and maybe some artificial light to supplement.
