Very nice arrangement and helpful tips. My herbs are the most well-utilized parts of my garden. It's a great savings over the expensive packages of cut herbs at the grocery.

So do I need to plant herbs that need more water in a different pot? .. I noticed you put rosemary in the same pot as herbs that like less water?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
They seem to grow just fine like this for a while, but eventually these plants will need more space, at which point I'll tailormake the potting mix and watering schedule for them more specifically.

Basil loves warmth and sunshine, but also good moisture as it's quite fleshy leaved. You could grow it with other fleshy leaved herbs like parsley, though I would try growing it on its own - perhaps growing a couple of different types of basil together. They come in a variety of leaf shapes, textures, and you can get red-leaved basil too - very pretty.
@purestilton

Thanks. It would be useful to know how to grow these plants from seed. And also how to plant supermarket herbs - do you have to split the individual plants up or can you just plant the whole lot together? How much distance do the individual plants need from each other etc

They are fine for the first season, and likely the second, after which time they're best separated and maybe planted individually to give them more space.

Sometimes broken pot pieces in the bottom will block draining..use a coffee filter!! :)
@GrowVeg

Yes, it's best to arrange the pot piece in a way that avoids that. Hadn't thought of using a coffee filter - it's a good idea, though I'd be concerned it would eventually rot away.

Thank goodness! Finally "herb" being pronounced correctly. I fear my pots are too small for my plans and I did it the wrong way round, bought random herbs that I liked without first checking their growing needs so out of the eight or so I chose I can only use three in the same pot. Trust me to pick greedy herbs and wild flowers 🙄 So lavender munstead, chamomile nobilis and purple sage in one pot. Garden mint in an oblong pot of its own. lemon balm, I guess, on its own too? As is mint family also Then hyssop, valerian and catmint ... No idea, I suppose I need to look for some larger pots. Rose, wallflower and sweet peas all in their own pots too. I'd put the catmint with the Rose but I doubt I'd find a pot big enough. Could I start them together and move them into their own pots as they grow?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 жыл бұрын
You can certainly grow plants together, then pot them on into their own, larger pots as they grow bigger and need the extra space. That's probably the best option in your situation. Lemon balm, for instance, would probably benefit from it's own pot as it can get quite big and gangly. Enjoy your herbs!
@whimsyrt
@whimsyrt 7 жыл бұрын
Thankyou, I've put the sage, chamomile and lavender in one pot, given lemon balm, mint, wallflowers and sweet peas a pot each and I've planted the catmints round the rose for now but will move them on when they grow larger

I have one question though. It's a bit unrelated though, but why do you put multiple seeds in one hole when you plant seeds.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 жыл бұрын
You don't always do that with all seeds. It depends on the likelihood of successful germination. Some people put multiple seeds in each hole to guarantee at least one seedling in that spot. Any extras can then be removed.

Hi :) Do you have a link to buy the perfect soil for my aromatics plant? I have sage, rosemary and Basil all Outdoor, but they aren't growing really well, I bought a cheap soil so I would like to change it for a good one, thanks :)
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 4 жыл бұрын
I can't offer a specific link Andrew, but you want to use a potting soil that is well drained. You could mix in a little sand or grit with your potting soil. Or use a soil-based potting soil. Basil should grow in most fresh, high-quality potting soils.
@RGJ109
@RGJ109 4 жыл бұрын
Andrea Giannetti I have had good luck with the organic potting soils. My basil grows well in my raised bed, too. Have you read “Square Foot Garden” by Bartholemew? His recipe for soil works well. Or you can mix peat moss, compost, and top soil.

I have a rosemary bush that has completely taken over my herb garden. It's a monster, but the hummingbirds are daily getting nectar from the residual blossoms even after our first hard freeze. How hard can I cut it back without killing it?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 жыл бұрын
You can cut all the stems back by at least half. It's best to do this in mid-spring. If the plant is really gnarled and neglected, then it may be best to replace it.

Do you have any tips on how to preserve any excess herbs.
@jeremyedowd
@jeremyedowd 7 жыл бұрын
I just dehydrated (dried) mine as I had excess this season. Results are mixed--parsley dried excellently but oregano and tarragon just blackened. The friend who loaned me his electric dehydrator told me there are heat and non-heat dehydrators to consider with herbs. I've had some luck freezing more hearty herbs like rosemary and thyme.

I planted parsley in a lot but when I took sprigs off for cooking, it didn't grow back! What am I doing wrong?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 7 жыл бұрын
It depends how much you cut off. If you cut the whole plant back then it won't grow back. This really only applies to perennial herbs such as thyme etc. Parsley won't grow back if you cut it right back.
@RGJ109
