32:30 DeBacco has a video called plant physiological differences I believe is the name, they have study listed on the various trimming techniques. The study conducted shows that two main trimmings is ideal. Bit before flower and once during to clean up bud sites (stricly to allow added light pen).

according to some fancy charts i saw once, chlorophyll a and b each have a red and blue band, the low blue band is usually missing from the cheap led lights i'm liable to shop for (but not from the homemade ones), iirc it's around 410nm +/-, some have uv-a a little lower. the bands were pretty narrow on the chart, like 10nm, but as far as veracity

Densest and most yield per sqare footage of root space was 6" pots filled with rockwool mini cubes or hydroton or even both. I would harvest 128 colas off a 5x9 flood table usully ending up with 128 oz. Co2 at 1000ppm with 3 1000hps or 6 315cmh with far red 700nmplus added. You can get the cmh closer and the co2 will let them use the shit out of it.

I've been growing weed outdoors for 40 years and got the rap sheet to prove it. I can't comment on indoor grows because I don't do them. Outdoors ground preparation and root growth is the key to a healthy plant but not necessarily dense buds. Probably the number one factor in all bud formation is genetics but apart from that the following applies: For dense buds avoid nitrogen other than what is strictly required for a healthy plant and preferably early in growth stages not later and never at flowering. Took me many years to understand that because I used to be into huge plants pushing them at all stages with max nitrogen for optimum growth. Apart from that the secret is simply max sunlight end of story. There are no chemicals that will increase bud density in a good way. I prefer organic grows and the plants that get the most sunlight for the longest always have the best buds and potency is directly related to heat. The more the plant bakes in the sun and the more extreme and dry the heat then the more potent it gets regardless of bud density. It should also be noted that bud density can be a very bad thing outdoors in a humid environment.

Agreed on all points. The tighter those budz are will cause rain etc to accumulate. Where I am the plants are in full flower during rainy weeks and sometimes the sun won't appear for days. Next, the budworms are usually starting to flourish at this time along with all other insects since the added rain is causing so much growth in all vegetation. Even with B.T. you will most likely see some chewing and rot.especially since the rain will wash away b.t. and keep you inside and not inspecting your plants. I'm trying to cross a few favorites that are dense and airy. Hopefully this year I will have plants that are wide instead of 10 feet high.will be able to hold their own weight in flower even when wet and with 60 mph wind. Will have minimal trimming, and won't smell up the entire block. 😆👌 we can all dream right? Lololololol.💚

You’re spot on Chris. Humidity is the key. Too high and mold issues unless the buds are airier to breathe, and too low and they’re airy because they have to breathe more. Also why many indica landrace genetics aren’t mold resistant because they never have to deal with that in their natural environment. Great episode. 10 years and still learning, never stagnate.

It's a two way street. You can have a little more heat, if the moisture is helping the plant out. You can run low a little on moisture, if its not too hot and so on. But if you create those -/- situations where you are dry AND hot for example that's killing your bud.

Looking up the genetic tree of said given strain and finding where the landrace strains came from then mimicing that in your garden is a great way to avoid issues because you are giving it what it was created and flourished in naturally. Basically like you said many Kush Indica strains from Afghanistan can do well in low humidity but once the % is too high powdery mildew shows up real quick.

Totally agree, i literally trim my plant very aggressively about week 3-4 in flower. I can say this is also strain dependent but normally I can say many strains I grow all plants after I lollipop have around 6-9 tops period! On some exotic strains that don’t produce much with any training habit it is what it is, I usually leave about 5 tops on the plants and leave me a very nicely formed Nug generally from top to bottom. So yeah Nug density and structure can be manipulated by trimming your plants down 🙏 great video

Maybe a little peroxide and some molasses during flowering and that's all you need. I'd also suggest some mycorrhizae maximum root growth. But that's about it.

Temperature!!! I use a small air conditioner and keep the 2x4 grow tent around 50-55 degrees. I’m in a hot humid climate and I grew loose airy Bud’s even with phenomenal genetics. The first grow I got the AC in there it was a game changer. It’s true that bud grows loose if it’s hot and humid. The plant is smart and keeps itself from molding, so it will grow loose for airflow. Bring the temp down and man what a difference!

I figured out how to grow denser buds by training the roots to absorb in a specific way. I call it dry water. Ive only tried it for outdoor buds. It makes sativa buds denser and indica buds even more denser. You get a large pot that has more width and one that keeps in moisture like a plaster. Of course using a grow medium that's practically worm casting, mulch and/or coco choir with organic nkp. The goal is to use minimal water in the vegetative stage. Making sure that the watering never soaks the entire pot or flows out the bottom. Just a few cups to allow it to grow. In the wild as long as the plant has moisture it will grow, even in a solid slab of cement. Because it learns to use whats available. Plants are adaptable. Here's the trick. You're aiming to have some of the roots push its growth into the dry/barely moist medium. This will force the plant to adapt and change its ability of absorption into a robust form. Forcing it to self regulate, hold more water, retain moisture appropriately with nature and, won't expell excess water through its leaves/stems. It will be picky at what it allows itself to absorb at its growth stages so it wont eat much nitrogen and make it fluffly. We teach our plants to depend on an extreme level of watering thats considerd unnatural. Too much water changes its functionality. Once the roots grow in the dry soil youll see the plant will have a sturdy structure. You pretty much want the roots to fill the pot slowly by the time it reaches budding. If you soak through the pot the roots will overtake the entire pot, eat up all the nutrients and youll have a plant starving for water and food and drooping a day after water. That stresses the plant and after budding its roots and plant structure stop growing thus its ability to change its chemistry and protocol will be hinderd or shot. By the time the plant goes into flower, water it well everyday. Its a tad bit smaller in the veg stage but it will look solid and robust. It wont droop for a while and the plant gains this ability to take what it needs in a balanced way from the soil thats still rich from staying dry, instead of just drinking it all up like a trained sponge and eating up nitrogen when it doesent need to. Thats how I got denser buds. They look like top notch buds. Tipped a few times and only removal of bottom leaves for flow, maybe lollipop it. My next grow I plan to stop giving the plant nitrogen a few weeks before it flowers to attempt to get all the nitrogen out of the soil. Of course we all do that but theres still nitrogen in soil. Of course genetics play a role too but it seems to work best for my observation.

I'm in search of the perfect ratio of blue to red using red, blue, and white leds during flower. Something that has worked for me to help my plants transition early is to run the red lights only for the last 10 - 15 mins once the flower light cycle begins. This makes the plant think that it is in the shade and winter is coming. I have noticed quicker transitions during a side by side comparison

Thanks Chad! Agree genetics are number 1 by a long shot. By far the most dominant factor for density. Think cookies vs. haze. Most hype breeders slinging cookie-dominant lines will be tight. Got your dense genetics? Number 2 is light. High intensity is needed, and a spectrum that's blue-dominant with plenty of UV will tighten things up like a seal's behind (think CMH, clean white leds) Compared to HPS or a spectrum w/o enough blue or UV, ie lights that more dominant w/far red/IR will promote more stretch/elongation. I think plants like their environment warm and humid, like mid 70s-mid 80s F and humid enough to smell it or feel it. Think summer air vs. winter air. I dont pay too much attention to CO2 or nutes because I'm running living soil and the plants feed themselves what they want

@Mrgrowit thank you for all that you've done I'm a first time grower . On my first run. I started watching all sorts of videos and tutorials but yours have been the most informative. Your pie casts in KZbin auto play after I watch any other video. To me that tells me where you're at on this algorithm. You have helped me in so many ways with your interviews you do. All the people who you've interviewed deserves a lot of credit. But you Chris have made this happen and thank you for your dedication to making gardening an open source for All to learn. When talking about defoliation growers need to remember that perspiration pulls the water and nutrients through the plant so by removing too many leaves at one time can hurt more than it helps.

I absolutely loved this episode !! I have a few very important ones in my opinion to add to this list .. Especially for organic growers ! 1)BIG 6 from build a soil , seems like that helped tons with bud density , fed it until day 40 of flower then stopped because it has heavy metals , micronutrients are the element that a lot of growers forget about . 2)Ferments (Bio stimulant) Tried fermented peach extract from build a soil, saw a drastic change in yield since I’ve been using it , in this grow it looks like it almost doubled my return on this run . 3)Build A Soil Aminos (also a bio stimulant) , made a huge difference in my yield , used it 3 times this run , once in veg and twice in flower as soil drench and it works wonders ! Noticeable differences the day after I used it ! 4) Silica , I use Agsil from Build a soil , silica will increase trichome production plus give you size , especially with this agsil because it is potassium silicate fed all the way to day 55 . Personally I use a lot of Build a Bloom from Build A Soil as well , very balanced organic nutrient and it has aminos in it as well , I feed this until day 55 . Cheers to everybody and happy new year 🎆

Generally I find growers who sell dense ultra dry buds gives the best experience. Loose buds tend to be moist and smoke poorly.

This can also be a genetic factor. Some plants are are better for Hash, while others are bred for dabs and extractions. And that difference in flower can influence how each smokes nug for nug.

I have a theory that humidity manipulation can change the density. If you flower at 40% and allow the room to deviate to 50% the buds should in theory retain a bit more water and dense up. Allow them to rest at 50 for a little bit then go back to 40 and repeat. You don't have to worry about mold because 50% is still in the acceptable range. My tent fluctuates because the area I live makes it difficult to control. All of my plants have become extremely dense. I think this is because in the wild the humidity can not be controlled so simulating this indoors might have an effect on them. Also, I genuinely believe minor stress applied as a technique can make a difference in the buds. I say this because I'm not exactly the best grower so plant stress is inevitable at some point, but my buds smell like candy with a hint of diesel. The strain is watermelon zkittles.

I am on grow 6. You kind of glossed over probably the most important part. Lighting intensity adjustment during each week of flower. Do you blast it in week one or increase intensity in stages? This seems to be crucial in keeping your leaves from fading to soon. Say based on organic soil like most normal people use.

I'm testing out growing 3 clones and harvesting them each with a week apart. The first will be a week "early" then next will be what I would normally consider ideal and the last will be a week late. I've heard trichome development plays a big part in the perceived effects.

24:20 Do not get co2 canisters or exhale bags! The CO2 coming from these is negligible. Barely goes above 700 ppm in a packed 4x4. They also cost $40 ea and you would need 2-3 per harvest which is $120. A 20lb CO2 tank is $180 and lasts a lifetime. Only need to refill it twice per harvest ($30) and it will pump out max 1200PPM which is what the ideal at max light and heat. And it definitely recouped the cost and more with bonus yields/density valued $600+ per harvest in 4x4. I’m going with a propane burner for my upgraded 10x10 and its even more efficient and lasts much much longer. You would need $1000s of exhale bags/canisters to even match the $180 burner. Ditch the useless bags/canisters go tank/burner, 1000% worth the investment.

I tend to prefer a slightly looser bud, not insanely loose or sparse but enough that it doesn’t feel like it just fiber. I have also noticed that bigger buds tend to have a smoke that is a bit harsher, and the Terps tend to not be as fragrant or forward. other people I’ve asked about the same subject seem to say the same things some people love giant dense nugs, cause they just wanna have volume.
