Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or pitayaha, is an incredible fruit produced by a cactus! Contrary to its name, the dragon fruit care is actually not like most cacti. It prefers nutrient-rich, well draining soil, a lot of space, and a decent (but not overwhelming) amount of sun.
I got some cuttings of the Hylocereus undatus variety, which is the red-skinned and white-fleshed variety. There are two other varieties:
- Hylocereus costaricensis: Red skin and red flesh
- Hylocereus megalanthus: Yellow skin and white flesh
Follow along as I learn how to grow dragon fruit in containers and compete against my friend to see who can grow the most EPIC dragonfruit. Just be patient...part 2 of this series might take a few months to come out!

Hello friend what is mix use you dragan plant ????
@imperatorfishrat4839
@imperatorfishrat4839 5 жыл бұрын
'Dragon fruit' farmer here. Depending on what variety you grow, they require different things. You should not have used peat moss as it is too acid. Your mix is good. Some general advice; use NPK or Nitrogen-heavy fertilizers very sparingly. Overuse of Nitrogen will give you lots of growth and few fruit. The best thing you can do is give them calcium, and most importantly a good rock flour. Tip your ends before blooming season, hand pollinate your blooms. They do best with part shade, and direct exposure to heat will reduce fruit set. They are not like a desert cactus, and require consistent soil moisture. Growing two different varieties will increase fruit size and set.

No problem. One other thing; there's absolutely no reason to ever use peat moss. It's very destructive to produce and harvest, and it dries out causing cloying. You will be better served by coconut coir 100% of the time--this is better in every way, and it's green.

I'm in Belize and it is my most successful plant. So much so, it is growing like a weed! I've got it in the ground, in regular soil that I've never fertilized. Contrary to what everyone else is saying, I have them in full sun and very rarely water them, despite the 2 year drought we are suffering. I only had 2 plants last year and got 20 big dragon fruits off each one. I have 6 more planted now. They are expensive here too, so I'm hoping to actually make a little money off them this year...if I don't eat them all first! :)

Oh and I forgot to mention, they seem to have a symbiotic relationship with black ants, which may be why they pollinate so successfully and other pests don't bother the plants.

I'm in Australia and I had mine in a garden bed in the front yard and it didn't grow an inch. A Chinese neighbor told me I should move it or it might go missing one night like her pumpkins did one night. So I switched it to a garden bed in the back yard which I had earlier emptied a heap of my homemade compost and it has shot up and looks like it is about to fruit. It gets full sun most of the day but shade in the hottest part of the afternoon. I almost never water it but we have been getting a bit of rain and it has a lemon and orange tree on either side and just seems to love that location. Now it's just a waiting game!

Great information. I have over 70 varieties and grow them in 15-25 gallon pots with Fox Farms Soil. I amend the soil with extra perlite, vermiculite, pumice, and a bit of native soil. If you want fruit faster, train a single branch up a trellis and develop a canopy. It takes about 20 pounds of plant material to support a proper fruit.

Keep in mind that these plants are cacti, and they have thorns. And even though these are small, they'll still hurt you. When you've got a large mass of branches growing in all directions, you will regret every time you have to try to walk past if there's not a lot of space all around, not to mention pollinating the open flowers and harvesting the fruit.

@RH-zt9ph
@RH-zt9ph 5 жыл бұрын
I grow them here in SoCal, you will find they will flower much more prolifically if you build a support over which they can droop. You will notice with commercial growers and I have found it to be true that they need to start growing downward after growing upward a few feet to get proper flowering. You will likely have to hand pollinate as the flowers open at night and are naturally pollinated by bats or a specific moth. If you are lucky, they may stay open long enough in the morning hours to attract some bees, but it is not likely. There are many videos on hand pollinating, if you are lucky they can be pollinated with their own pollen, but mostly you need two varieties to get good fruit. Good luck!

Shae Davis I get them here locally in SoCal, but I see them online and on eBay all the time. Buy a shoot about a foot or more long and just plant it, where you are maybe in a large pot with cactus mix, get 2 varieties as even tho most say self fertilizing, I had no luck until I had 2 different kinds. You mostly have to hand pollinate as the normal polinaters are bats and moths as the blooms only open at night and are viable for about 2 hours.

@@krist3nmari38 uh yeah …club.😂 But addiction is definitely the right word. Got into gardening in 2021 after a friend gave me a tomato plant in 2020. Didn’t think it would survive honestly as I don’t have a green thumb but decided to see if I could keep it alive. Despite all my mistakes it survived and even gave fruit. I was hooked and continue to add to my knowledge. Love learning and in 2021 bought a dragon fruit plant just to see if I could grow it. It’s actually grown although it’s got red (rust colored) spots all over and not sure if it will survive. Gotta research this as I’m not sure what it is or if it can be fixed. But I don’t see failure, I see learning opportunities.😊 Also have to check the variety as I don’t know if it’s a self pollinator or needs a friend.

@glum7493
@glum7493 3 жыл бұрын
@@branlight7762 Buy a dragon fruit and scrape the seeds out then you can let them dry out on a piece of paper for some seeds if you want. Although I recommend buying a cutting off of Amazon or something because it’s faster to get fruit like 7 - 12 months compared to seed which is like 4 - 7 years. Plus some of the cuttings you can get off of there you can get them for around 5-10 dollars more than an actual dragon fruit. (including shipping.) Edit: I much rather recommended the cutting unless you like growing plants from seeds. Another edit: if it gets too cold where you live then I recommend also buying a grow light to put over your dragon fruit while you keep it inside because they die from cold temps. I experienced this first hand and it sucked because I left it outside when it was cold and it decided to rot to death.

We have our dragonfruit plants supported by star-pickets, with wooden poles wired to them, so the plants will grip. Even though the pickets are well into the ground, one of our plants recently collapsed under its own weight. We had to cut most of it back, just so it was light enough for us to lift it back up. There is no way those pots are going to be anywhere near big enough. The pictures you've seen of dragon fruit plants in SE Asia are not several cuttings around one support, they're one plant per support. They branch out all over the place, giving the appearance of more than one plant. I always tell people we give cuttings to, the most important thing it needs is a very strong support. Also, don't put it near a brick wall, as the roots will get between the bricks and crack the wall. If you look up Self Sufficient Me on KZbin, Mark has done a great video on growing dragon fruit in a pot, on top of an old tree stump. That way it already has the height it needs to grow fruit and doesn't need the plant itself supported.

I stay away from it pretty much all together. Also, peat moss can cause a sudden and extreme drop in PH at some point, that can cause some major issues too. In the future I would recommend either not using it at all and finding something else as a substitute or at least making sure you use very small amounts. I personally don't believe the limited benefits of the peat moss is worth the potential for the disastrous conditions it can cause. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

anyone to help? we are starting to plant dragon fruits at a tropical country where the climate is humid and plants can grow vigorously: after some years of planting; the humidity inside the vines can be a hotbed for the pests? is there an organic way to control this? i.e. smart pruning? Thanks

I am Phoenix, I have had mine for about 3 years, lots of arms but no fruit yet, I am east facing so it gets morning and mid morning sun, I do shade it in the summer , and now I am hearing I should have gotten 2 but we will see what happens, they do sometimes have dormant period, mine stopped growing for a few months and then just took off, good luck

Hello I am Preston LeFevre. I notice that you grew your 🐉 dragonfruit cactus🌵 from cuttings, but I am about growing them indoors as babies. Is it ok if I use the bottom watering method on the dragonfruit cactus seedlings (the 1 I am thinking about buying from stores). My method for growing tropical houseplants is simply by pouring a small amount of water into a plastic cup the plant is in. Just curious, and thank you

Overwatering can turn the lowest parts to mush. It this happens, cut off the mushy part and replant it in fresh sandy soil and water infrequently, it’s a desert living plant!

Hi there! Great video. I am here because I popped the rotting top off a grafted cactus and BOOM all these branches started sprouting off the host cacti. Come to find out I have a dragonfruit. Lol Problem is now the leggy sproutings are growing the roots from the sides, apparently trying to reach for something. I'm in St Louis, so definitely not tropical or sunny unless its May through September, so I have my plant inside with some grow lights for the winter. But the finger-looking roots have me scrambling for what to do as it grows over the winter. 😮 I'm assuming my best bet would be get a big pot and immediately repot and secure it to a rough surface like chicken wire or something? I'm going to have to bring this in and out of the house as the seasons change.

hi i have found that mulching works. You can use grass and leaves to help keep it moist. You can also use animals manure as well. Just make sure you have a fungicide on hand. They can get fungus out of the blue sometimes.

I've bought seeds, but will likely hold off planting until next year as I am propagating plants for my Dad's new property and being the test garden for his veggie plans (My veggie plans, his new property has far more space and much better soil) so running out of space (Who really needs a dining room table?) My soil is basically sand, so looks like I will have to cut this with another product to get a good loom. I am eager to see how your plants go.

@@epicgardening Currently, we have a dozen different varieties of Dragon Fruit cuttings and plenty of flora to plant them under to protect them from the Southern California sun. If given a choice, would you plant them under a ficus, bamboo, magnolia, or something else? We've failed for the last 5 years treating this plant like a cactus or an arid succulent. Any insight is appreciated!

@@WhatPlantisthatPaul I grown pitaya ( dragon fruits ) here in Brazil. I don't think too much sun is a problem for them. What a notice is that they need much more water then a cactus does. Probably you are growing yours in the desert with not enough water. It's important that the soil doesn't get too wet though. And of course they need nutrients.

marcos lobo Thanks for the insight.... We’ve learned a lot the past few months and attended the Pitaya festival and farm production tour.... We have over 60 varieties and are now grafting. Most tolerant the sun fine, but the temperatures cold and hot affect different varieties in different ways.

@@WhatPlantisthatPaul 60 varieties, that's great! Which one produces more? I understand the issue about drastic changes of temperature. Here (I'm in the middle of the country) is very hot most of the year. So the plants don't suffer from this. Luckily!

My local Home Depot just got whole bunch of red flesh dragon fruits. I picked one up for only $10!!! I’m so excited to repot it soon. Since I only have one plant, think 16” terra cotta pot should do it. Not sure yet how I’m going to trellis it. So far thinking of just getting a heavy duty tomato cage since I can’t build a sturdy wooden one.
