@@jennifersteeves5482 they wetted the compost soil before they planted the seeds. The plastic cover helps to conserve moisture. This is a tough plant that grows in it's native area of extremes.

Good to see a video that shows all the stages, not just sowing the seed which is the easy part! I have found that some echinacea varieties (like Green Twister, beautiful) do flower a bit in year one but definitely much stronger and better flowering in year 2.

Thank you very much for this clear & easy to follow tutorial. I really appreciated that it was aimed at a novice or small scale gardener, and that was devoid of pricey ( and perhaps unnecessary?) gadgets like grow lights, heat mats, mini trowels, and the like. Also thank you for mentioning that Echinacea only flowers the subsequent season! I nearly threw mine out, wondering if I had bought duds. All the best & happy gardening. these flowers are beautiful. So the first year we don’t see any flowers blooming. right now it’s the middle of July. I’m gonna plant them in pots and then move them into my backyard. Hopefully the end of August September will still be warm. And hopefully next year I’ll see some flowering. Thanks for the information.

I get so many volunteer coneflower / echinacea babies that I dig up and put in container of a mix of perlite, Peat, and clean sand. They do great. I guess there's more than one way to get to Carnegie Hall.

loved the video - voice is so relaxing - great no nonsense show and tell. I picked up some good tips..... one question Im late for sowing indoors so what happens in you sow them directly into the soil? Would that be as successful?

If you are late then why not start indoors? Otherwise you can sow them outdoors - I would cover with plastic or glass to keep them warm and help them germinate quicker. Keep safe.

When they die during winter do you just leave them to do their thing? Or do you need to cover them to avoid frost or cut them back or anything like that? (Sorry very new to gardening was going to do some of these this week) also can they be kept in a large pot/container? How deep should the pot be if so?

I cut mine down to at start of winter then just leave them. New shoots then come up from ground in spring. Sorry I have never grown them in pots.

I've done a bit of research, and I think the size pots you choose, depend how big you want the plant to grow in height? And I think the pots need good drainage holes. I'm excited to see mine flower next year, it's an exciting project & something to look forward to!😄 I thought I'd do it now because I'd regret it when it comes round to next year😅

@Noshin Mahmud I started mine in seedling trays & am slightly increasing the pot sizes as time goes on & they get bigger, not sure how big the end pot will be, but going to try different ones out & see what does best, or if putting 2 in a trough will work? Mine grew seedlings within like 2 weeks, and at the point when the stem & leaves got bigger, that's when I moved it to a slightly bigger pot. Hope it goes well for you😊🤞x

You do not need to cold stratify echinacea purpurea. Although I think you need cold stratify the other echinaceas.

Hi Maria. Compost is decomposed organic matter that contains plenty of nutrients. Soil is mainly mineral based. Good luck with your growing and keep safe.

Thank you very much for making this video, how are the flower going? Could you tell the location you plant this in terms of sunlight? I get struggle of choosing location for my plants. The instruction sometimes can be incorrect, ie some plants require full sun but can be tolerant to semi shade, but if I put them on that condition plants got burnt. Is your fence area get afternoon sun or morning sun?

My Echinacea come back year after year and have been wonderful this year. The fence runs north to south and here in the UK the sun will be on the plants from midday until about 1 hour before sunset. Hope this helps
