Hi Shelly! I bought some daylily seeds from you and they are doing amazing!!! I planted them a little late but they are about 5" tall. Only two didn't germinate so pretty good! Now I just have to keep them alive:)

Hi Shelly…I just signed up for your newsletter. I would also love to buy some of the seeds, if they are available… echinacea are one of my favorite flowers you grow in your garden…I’m going to be purchasing the seedlings trays your using this year 🌼 My husband has used similar but larger pots with venting for growing chestnut and apple trees that we graft onto root stock and by far the root structure is so much better. He also always asks when I start watching my you tubers …”has that couple that you watch have any new films posted” . We love the bantering back and forth 😅

Also you reminded me to get my echinacea seeds out of the fridge and plant them up. I am trying Paradiso super duper too. I hope they germinate and grow:) Another new one I'm trying is Alan's Pride. Last year I planted about 75 echinacea purpurea that I grew from seed and I had bunny-mania last summer and they ate every last one. I'm hoping some of them grow back this year but we will see. Great video as always:)

Definitely will pot up... the more soil they have, the bigger they will be and less stressed by May. :-) I expect these to be in those trays for 6 weeks-ish.

I enjoyed this video, I hope you share a video of the echinacea seedlings when and how you transplant them into bigger cells. I started my echinacea seeds in seed starting mix, wondering when you fertilize, what size cells you transplant to. You got me hooked on echinacea. Where did you get the pretty one I think you call Lovely Lotta, or something like that?

Hey Marian! I have potted up from the small 72ct tray to regular 6 packs now. Not a huge bump up but just enough to give them room to stretch out. I’ll post on my Facebook page so you can see them in their current state… it was 45° today so they were able to go outside for some real sunshine… only about 2-3 hours for now. They will start going outside during the day and in at night until transplant time (May) for us. I feed them every two weeks with a weak solution of Neptunes Harvest Fish and Seaweed Emulsion. Normal rate is 1/8 cup per gallon. I use about half that… and bottom water. That means I fill the tray under them and let the soil soak it up. Just make sure there is not a lot of excess water sitting in the tray after 45 min. Hope this helps!

You can cover with perlite instead of vermiculite.

I have some regular pink echinacea but I also have a special variety that is smaller and salmon colored. What do you think the possibility that the seeds were cross pollinated? I really wanted the salmon color seeds to produce salmon colored echinacea but I'm thinking they might turn out to be a mix. 🧡

If they are close to each other, they could very well cross-pollinate. You’d have to grow all the seeds out to know which little bract holds the magic seed. Thats why I love growing out a TON of seeds… you just never know what one will be something new!

I have learned a lot from you. Didn’t know that I needed to put in a cold place. Now that I know after my seeds have been in the. After they have gone through the cold period can I use the same soil and put them in it or do I need to start with fresh soil.

I don’t recommend it, they can and will rot with soaking. They don’t have a hard outer coating like some seeds. They are quite fragile. They can germinate as quickly as 4 days. A good watering at planting and a humidity dome will be perfect!

The potting mix should be pre moistened and then you can water in the seeds lightly, yes. 🙂

I will transplant them first week in May…. Which is when our last frost date is. I usually wait until I see the coneflower plants in the garden start to emerge and wake up a bit from winter.

Thanks for the video - I have had echinaceas in the past germinate really well but a few weeks after germinating they all die? Any idea what could be happening?

Could be a couple things… damping off with is a fungal disease that will kill off seedling that have just germinated… usually over wet soil or lack of air circulation contributes. Also, could be fungus gnat larvae in the soil. If you’re using a potting mix, the larvae is in the soil… you’ll start to see little gnats flying around the soil line… those are the adults that have hatched out and they continue to mate and lay babies in your soil that then feed on the roots of seedlings. Those are the two most common problems with seedlings.

If you use the milk jug containers, you don’t need to water. Leave the cap off all through the winter, they will get what they need from normal snow/rain. 🙂

I have tried over and over to grow echinacea..year after year and they never grow. I store my seeds in the freezer, I'm wondering if maybe they need a warm period before the cold? Maybe it's the storing of them in the freezer that is the problem? Does that make sense lol .

I store in the fridge… I’ve never put them in the freezer but I also winter sow and they freeze in the soil so there’s that. Try refrigerating instead. It might just be because of the bare seed that freezer doesn’t work.
