Hey James, We love the long thin varieties and for three years we had plants that grew but flowered so late there was no fruit before the first frost. This year was similar but we had two fruits make it to about 5" long the day of the first frost. So I have hope for next year. I will try the steps you spoke of here and will bookmark this video for 2 months before my frost date on the calendar to go back and watch it. So I will have two weeks to get everything prepared. Thank you for the video

I recently talked to someone who starts their eggplants in the fall and just move them on up in container sizes until they can transplant outside. They said it’s been the only way they’ve been able to get a harvest before frost here in Missouri without being great with fertilizer. I am trying it this year. I started them a couple days ago. My grow room is in my work office so it’ll be easy to just keep up with them since I work in the same room.
@Hollenross2 жыл бұрын
I was also tempted to try to overwinter one of my eggplants like I do some of my peppers,them being the same kinda species sort of, but I haven’t decided. I have till tomorrow I guess to see if I want to try that experiment since our first frost is coming up soon.

James I love growing container varieties “Casper” & “Black Beauty “ along with Thai Basil, purple Basil, purple Salvia & purple prince Zinnia in giant patio pots. I change up the color combinations yearly. I have always found the eggplants too bitter, strictly ornamental. But maybe I’ll try out your tricks for testing ripeness👏 👋hey from Haddon Heights, NJ

Try Cardinal Basil and Pineapple Sage if you haven't already. I grew the basil for the first time this year for the flowers and they are amazing, kind of a dark burgundy and very different from most basil flowers. Both the hummingbirds and I love the red flowers on the pineapple sage (a type of salvia I think). These take a long time to flower so are best started indoors in March. I grow the purple basil in pots as well.
@cassandraberger91462 жыл бұрын
@@sbffsbrarbrr I grew cardinal basil for the 1st time as well! In large pots with other plants too & in the garden! I totally agree it’s a show stopper! I start my gardens indoors in my “grow room” spare bedroom, from seed around mid February. Pineapple Sage seeds I will be on the look out for! Thank you👏👍👩🏻🌾

James I have been very inspired and working and planning all summer to start constructing a food forest. Relocated things around the yard, carport, generator, stone area, cut down trees, etc....so that I can make a decent size food forest. I live near wetlands, brook, and woods so I have lots of leaves and made 3 huge compost piles (which are just about ready) as well as leaf mould piles. I recently bought a wood chipper and made 4 large contractor (250 gallon durabags), full of arborist wood chips and have a large tractor coming in the next 2 weeks. My question I have is that I have horrible clay soil now and I would like to remove about 15 to 20 inches of the clay top soil and replace with 5 or 6 inches of compost then 12 inches of wood chip mulch and bring it back up level with the rest of the yard before winter in hopes that it will make it better to start in spring. Is this plan seem alright? I can't seem to find someone who has done this. Everybody just says pile the wood chips but I don't want it lumped up higher than rest of yard. Hope to hear from ya. Thanks and give Tuck a scratch under the chin for me.

always curious if people are coming out ahead financially when doing container gardening consider the high cost of materials for low results plus expensive city water vs jut buying final product in store. potting soil even homemade much more expensive than building soil in the ground and direct ground planting.
@myurbangarden76952 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It costs to get started, but once you get past the learning curve you can come out on top. In 2018 gardening was not as expensive, but now I think it is nessesary considering the rising cost of produce for a family.
