We planted 15 trees, watered and mulched, they all started dying, browning, mildew and blight after 3 weeks. I took all the mulch off, poked holes around the root ball, I’m now treating them alternating between baking soda spray and hydrogen peroxide spray, plus watering occasionally with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Mulching incorrectly cuts off oxygen to the roots. I now water 40 min. Once a week with a soaker hose. The first year these seem to be high maintenance

Hello. Very informative video ! I was considering planting a row of 10 or so emerald arborvitae in a 46 x 5' raised bed beyond a retaining wall. I would like to keep them around 6 ft max, but in listening to your video you suggested this might not be the best application for these. Is there another type of evergreen I should be considering? I'm looking for that classic Christmas tree shape. Thanks !

For those people looking for a similar size screening tree, that will tolerate heat and drought, check out the Skyrocket Juniper. While the Emerald Green Arborvite is a beautiful tree, it does not tolerate heat, wind or drought well at all. The Skyrocket Juniper has a more silvery-blue foliage, and it grows about 15' high and 3' in diameter. I live in Central California, In zone 9b, and the hotter it gets the faster the Skyrocket Juniper grows (about 18" plus per year). I have 40 Skyrocket Junipers in my yard , and they are all growing great. They have gone from 4' to about 10' in just under 3 years, and they have survived temperature extremes from 28 degrees up to 110 degrees in 40+ MPH winds. I just wanted to make this comment since I see a lot of people looking for a hot weather alternative to the Emerald Green Arborvite. However, Jim is spot on with his descriptions and suggestions, as usual.

I've planted Leyland and Arizona Cypress as well as Green Giant and Emerald Green Arborvitaes. The only tree I've had issues with were the Emerald Green's. I live in zone 7B (Mississippi) I'm not sure what I did wrong but the foliage turned brown eventually almost the entire tree was brown. I'm not sure what I did wrong but my other trees which are now about 3 years old are doing great. I just didn't have any luck with the Emerald Green Arborvitae.

If you have deer in your area, Emerald Green Arbs are a NO GO. The deer will obliterate them. If you have deer nearby and want a 12 to 15' evergreen, consider junipers or hollies, there are plenty to choose from.

Awesome video! Can I plant these behind a shed? There is about 5 feet of space behind the shed, so when fully grown there may be only about two feet. The shed height is about 10 - 11' tall and 12 feet long, and will block the morning sun shining from the east. They will get full afternoon to evening sun from the west.

Hi Jim. I live in eastern Nebraska. We do get quite hot in the July August months. On a 5 foot spacing I’d have to plant close to 200 trees along the road. So watering that many would be an issue. I’ve watched multiple videos and these appear to need water quite regularly. Would I be better planting more of a local tree such as a red cedar? I plan on adding a second row of blue spruce on the inside part of these next spring. Thanks for the input.

Would it be OK to plant along a fence? I have my backyard fenced and part of it shows in the front of the house and I wanted to plant the belong there to just hide the backyard because my dogs keep it not looking so pretty. Im in 7b too. AR Ozarks. Also, the website where I purchased them said 3-5ft per year. I had a feeling it was an exaggeration! I've got pure clay veins. It's pretty when you dig into one! What's weird is, I've planted several trees, and lots of perineals, and I've found less than 5 rocks! When I was a kid every few months we had to go out to pasture and pick up rocks, the same thing pasture grew rocks! Lol I thought Arkansas had more rocks than it had soil so whomever came and got all the rocks out of my soil I'm forever grateful! But because on my relatively large city lot I have 3 silver maples the roots make up for the lack of rock! LOL the big silver maple is so gorgeous, it hangs almost like a weeping willow, otherwise, I'd have them removed! I hate those, gown on top of the dirt roots! I mow part of my lawn on 3 and part on 2! My friend S me why don't just MOL on 3, but I just don't like it that tall. I don't know why anyone would plant a silver maple? These may have just grown there. I pull up hundreds and hundreds of maple trees a year! I have never seen seeds germinate as well as those deeds do without even trying. The other day there are 7 silver Maple trees Rowan and the corner of my roof in the gutter! I am female and Dang near 60 years old it was probly quite a sight watching may climb up there and pull trees out of my gutter lol

It's hot in the summer my 12 Arborvitae first year plants in October last year three of them are showing brown ends one a lot I believe its the heat so I spray off twice a day for more humidity and increased the water on a drip at 5 gal per day. I'll trim brown off when the heats over. Lost on what to do they are canopied by 30 yr old redwood trees 25 ft. away I have 18 of those and they are doing well on sprinkler sprayer 20 min a day. So any suggestions on the browning. I don't want them to die I'm on 1/2 acre they are my wind breakers and noise reduction plan.

I would give them some time, but conifers can be slow to repair themselves. So maybe pull them out if it doesn't look promising by late spring.

How deep did you dig? What spacing and how much water are they getting... also you might want to spray for mites. Where you are will also effect the growth rates. Did you give them enough water during the rooting period and what is your sun exposure. Yes they like sun but also need shade. Once they are big enough and with proper water, they will shade each other. Also when planting make sure you dig a hole twice the size of the root-ball. I put a piece of dead sod under them for cushion and food over the first winter. Also you must put some type of mulch to keep the roots from drying out at the base of the plant. For you brown plants I would treat the lion. Start with Mite spray, add mulch at the base, fertilize and add a soaker hose and make sure they are getting enough water. It might take until a spring growth cycle to see a vast improvement, but you should see an improvement fairly fast, letting you know you are on the right track.

Hi Jim, I'm considering these for 2 corners of my back deck to be planted in 12 gallon planter boxes. Hoping to stay under 6 feet tall for at least a couple years. Is that a reasonable plan & expectation? Zone 7, deck gets full sun until about 2pm.

+Chad Papineau Should be fine under six feet for years. If the temperature goes to single digits those pots will need protection.

How often should new plants be watered the first year with a spray nozzle on a garden hose?
@northwestnurserysales792

@Alden Buyer Very good advise! For the homeowner that is not going to check the soil dampness, I'd suggest weekly when the summer temperature is 90 degrees or less and twice weekly when it gets over 90 degrees. That assumes little summer rain as we experience in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. This would also be guidance for the first summer. After that arbs should be well rooted in and do fine all summer without watering except for the unusual (for Oregon) 95+ hot dry spell every few years. My timing assumes the plants are well watered as you suggest.

Hi Jim I was thinking about planting these with Leyland Cypress along my property line for privacy would it be ok to plant them together and if so how many feet apart would you recommend? Thanks.
@davidrice7969

Leyland Cypress grow extremely fast and will give you privacy quickly but the lifespan is short. Might want to consider something native and research lifespans.

I'm in zone 7b Looking for privacy planting full sun and this sounded great until the thing about the dryer soil conditions and taking years to recover the brown/dead foliage. Do you have any suggestions? I was considering Emeralds , Nellie stevens hollie, or green giants only I don't want to prune too often. I subscribed keep it up.

Will 4 feet between my fence and concrete be enough to plant this tree for privacy or should I get something smaller, I just need about 8 feet tall plant or tree or something...my house is on a corner lot and the side of the house facing street is where I would like to add a privacy screen so people won't see the inside of my yard. My yard sits high so everybody that drives by or walks by can see me. I thought about lattice too but I like the idea of a natural privacy barrier better..like I mentioned before I have about 4 feet of dirt between fence and concrete slab.. I will be needing something too to block my neighbor since he has a 2 house story facing my back yard.

Hi! I just planted a row of these five days ago into my heavy clay soil amended with garden soil and their bottom branches are drooping! Please help. I’m so nervous they’re going to die. I watered them thoroughly upon planting and again the next day and the soil is still wet (used a pH/moisture/light meter). Could they be dropping because they’re too wet? Should I water again? I haven’t fertilized them but have some tree and shrub fertilizer spikes I could add. Should I go ahead with those?
