How to Grow Epiphyllum Orchid Cactus, Tips & Tutorial to Increase Flowering

This video is dedicated growing succulent Epiphyllum Orchid Cactus. While this video features a night blooming Orchid Cactus, the care and tips for flowering are essentially the same for all Epiphyllum. These succulents are easy to grow plants but may require a bit of finesse to encourage flower formation. Believe me, it is worth the effort because when in bloom there is nothing quite like it!
Species correction: I believe it is actually an Epiphyllum hookeri rather than an Epiphyllum oxypetalum!

My "knarly" Epi came from a cutting from a cafe in Oklahoma. It was bought in the 40s. I got my cutting in 2001. It bloomed one flower in 2008 and not again until this year. I got 3 blooms on different leaves earlier but now have 3 blooms on one leaf.👍👍👍👍👍👍

Yes, this is the one I have and it is Hookeri. Such beautiful plants and so little you need to do... The more I ignore the better they do. I have to say yours is among the nicest I’ve seen !

Oh and I keep them outdoors all year, Southern California but it does get under 50 in the winter. In my experience you can’t kill these easily. Just don’t give up on them even if they look like they are. I’ve had cuttings sitting out to give to others without realizing they had tiny buds on them and even the disembodied branches made full-sized flowers. They like stress. Choose a smaller pot than you think they need, water less than you think they need etc.

I also live in PA and have pruned, fed, taken outside, kept contained, brought back indoors and nothing! I used to raise them in a southwest facing passive solar envelope greenhouse in Michigan from a couple cuttings I brought back from a summer excavation I was on in the Yucatan. They performed very well in the space, and because we created it to have open soil flooring with tile paths, which enabled us to spray down everything in it as needed with a hose. They loved the created "weather".

What a great informative video! I have my grandmothers Cactus! She would wake us up to see the blooms at night when I was a child. I just love it! Mine has been indoors for a year because I moved. I live in TX...lost my 25 yr old plant froze in Feb 2021. I have been photographing incredible blooms at 3-4 in the morning for 25 years. I'm starting over...I've purchased some new cuttings...can you recommend a particular soil. My plant was in regular old potting soil that I changed out every few years. Oh noooo! that is such a sad story. but also amazing that you would get up to take the photos in the middle of the night! for my new epiphyllum i just use a normal potting mix 70% mixed with 30% perlite and i find its a pretty good mix. i think more important that the soil is allowing the plant to get root bound

Great information! I have a very old cereus that has gotten gangly over the years.. I'm going to cut mine back and repot it and try to cultivate it to be more compact like yours. I am in Virginia and I move mine outside around mid-May and it loves the warmth and humidity through the summer months... I start to see buds forming in September... but I've never had a flush of bloom like yours. I shall continue to try :)

I have had this plant for five years and some stems have reached the ceiling. I had a previous plant that did bloom indoors but it was near a plant light and west window. You are correct-it should be outdoors in summer. Also correct-not in direct sunlight. I know this video is two years old so assuming you are still growing it. Your plant is lovely!

Great video! Just got one of these and am excited to see it grow! Do you find that the “leaves” feel soft while you are propagating them? I have one propagation that was pretty firm when I cut it and it feels pretty limp right now. I let it callous over and just recently put it into soil so I’m sure it’s probably dehydrated while it is growing roots.

Does it feel like droopy soft? it should still propagate fine but may never recover its firmness. which in time won't be a problem. if it is cold where you live i'd consider getting a heating pad for your prop if you are concerned

Hi. What a gorgeous plant ! I took my Mom's plant after she passed away in June and Im trying to learn all I can about them. I dont know which cultivar this one is. Its very big and in a very small pot and Im thinking it hasnt been repotted in many many years if ever. Its lopsided and very heavy to one side so I would love to be able to correct it if possible but Im afraid to do anything with it out of fear of breaking off any pieces. I use these hanging by a green house roof for about 20 years.I add a very light Bloom Buster, once a week or two.They hang about 6 too 8 feet.Up and down. A very exotic tropical look.Roots form by roof glass.The people love how much flowers I get.

Hey I have an orchid cactus about 3 years now. Every spring I get 2 beautiful flowers tops! Wondering if I should put in a bigger pot or does it like to be root bound. I just loosened the soil some as it was densely packed.

No, keep it in a smaller pot. Can take a few years to bloom. Starve them off water after the blooming season for a significant increase in lowers the next season. Honestly the more I ignored this planned for a while it looks like it was not doing well but as you can see some of the leaves are reddish brownish. I sometimes even get uglier looking almost dead looking branches and invariably those are the ones that make the most flowers. Be patient and don’t be afraid to “stress“ the plant and you will be rewarded!

Could be different where I am. Got one of these as a gift. Knew nothing about it. I put it outside on my east facing front porch steps. The porch is covered. It gets maybe 4 hours of morning sun. Tripled in size this year. Last winter I moved it inside the same porch as before, maybe three feet from where it lives outside. Still facing east behind a glass door. We keep porch temps around 65 through winter. It continues to grow. The only thing I do differently than most I see, is fertilize with water from my 300 gal goldfish/ koi pond. I clean the filter, which is a tidy cat litter bucket, every three months except winter and water everything I can with it. I have had zero issues with plants since. Don't know if it's because the nutrients are digested? But I couldn't be happier with the results. This is my second year with it and it is currently blooming. Also not sure if it's the variety, but mine had much wider/ thicker, green leaves and doesn't have any purpling. Is that expected? My other cacti do that with too much sun exposure, but again, ours look different so it could be solely location. I'm on the east coast (US) Great video and thanks for the propagation tips!

No 2- I have 1 ric rac Epiphyllum, 1 oxipetalum. 2 weeks back I got only two flowers after 5 years. Till now no flower in ric rac one. They two are very long. Ric rac has only two long stems but oxipetalum is huge. Don’t know how to manage. After a lot trimming these two flowers came. After that it is expanding again. Will you please suggest me what to do. @@malabanerjee8424 I haven't got that many pictures of my old queen of the night plant and my new one is only 8-9 months old and only has three leaves of which one is the cutting and the other two are younger and still growing. My old plant oxipetalum put out some flowers in 2004, 2007 and 2010. Sadly I lost the plant in 2011 when my son was born and I decided to let it go. I regret this now as it was sentimental being my Mum's cutting and from my Father's family and it would have been 22 years old. Don't worry about the flowers, they will come and when they do, they'll mean a lot more and be really special. Be sure to take pictures :)

@@malabanerjee8424 Thinking about it, you will need to replace the soil in the pot, I would take the plant out, scratch away the soil from the edges, have some new moist soil ideally garden compost which is super stuff and fill in the empty space around the edge of the pot, you could prune a few of the bottom roots away so that it grows new ones and put some new soil in the bottom of the pot. Hope this helps, my Mum used to look after my old plant and this might explain it's flowering every 3 years in response to the new soil being added.

Great video! You answered most of my questions except one, do these plants like to be sort of root bound? I have my plant on my lanai here in SW Florida and it's in a very large pot, which it had no problem overgrowing within a few years. Should I take a cutting and put it in a smaller pot to hopefully get it to bloom? I've given away cuttings that people have had bloom but mine never has. Theirs is in a small pot and seems to bloom regularly for them. Regularly being maybe once every 9 months or so. Keep up the great work!

For the summer, I have my plant on the south side of my yard under a Windmill Palm; however, it does get direct morning sun. Is that ok? What fertilizer do you recommend? Yes cactus soil is great. Try to slowly introduce it to that direct sun or it will get sun scald, it’s happened to me many times! Mine here in pa also gets hot direct morning sun and I just had to decrease its exposure, decreased to about 1 hour vs 2 previously. You can definitely get flowers next summer!! JuT keep it outside as long as possible this summer. I keep mine outside till nights touch 45F

These are beautiful blooms. I have on! But the one in this video actually isn’t the oxypetalum species. Oxypetalums have wider blooms that are more protea looking but white in how it looks. It’s stems and leaves are also not as jagged on the edges! But not entirely. Thankyou so much for the video!

I am in New Mexico. I was given a couple leaves several months ago. Its been indoors the whole time. Im curious about it being outside in this dry dessert climate. It is better to just keep it inside? Our house is kept at 71 degrees in the day but at night i set it to 68. Perhaps the temperature difference is enough being the sun isnt shining on it at night either? I keep the plant in a south facing window.

The first time I ever saw this plant was probably seven years ago in Ontario Canada went to visit some friends and they were so excited because it was blooming when we first got there takes six hours to open up and then closes for six hours and that was it I got a piece brought it home threw it in some dirt then left the country for six weeks. Figuring this will be dead and today it is a monster but my friends in Canada never bring it in outside. Actually it’s the indoor plant all year.

Great video! Question - I have a cutting in a mason jar filled with water for 4 weeks now and it grew a lot of white roots. I am considering relocating the cutting into a pot with dirt but I'm worried the roots will go into shock and die. Do you have any recommendations?

The sooner the better! Use a nice well draining mix and if possible and heat mat underneath would really ensure success

Hi, your "Queen of the Night" video caught my attention! I've got ALOT of questions for you. I lhave a "Queen of the Night". Except mine is well over 70+ years old. Maybe more. It was my great grandmothers. Im 53 and as a child id help bring all the plants up the stairs out of the creepy basement in the spring, i remember it. We would put it under a tree all summer and bring it in when it got chilly. And it looked the SAME! SAME terra cotta pot, same looking plant. So maybe you can help me out. As a child I remember my grandmother saying it only bloomed at night. And that was rare! I remember it starting to bloom and we waited until late and I fell asleep but she got to see it's beautiful bloom! * Since it's really OLD. Could it b a different variety? * It's in a terra cotta pot, could it be loosing too much water? Do I need to repot into a ceramic pot? Do I try to divide it? It's roots may have grown into the pot, I've seen that happen with my G grandmothers plants and my grandmothers plants. Terra cotta may have been different back then. * Also what kind of potting soil do you use? * Yours has red leaves, mine does not. * I had it inside all winter and it grew dreadlocks!!!!! When I pulled it out of the stand there was about 10+ LONG stems growing toward the sun. Some had roots. I have some of them trying to take root, am I wasting my time? * Should the pot have a hole in the bottom? If you have time please get back in touch, if not I understand. Thanks Bunches, Andrea

i'd cut off the growth with the brown or holes in it. use bagged houseplant potting mix. yes holes in pot. perhaps take cuttings and plant up in a new container. red leaves are a product of being in lots of sun and fade as the season changes.

A quick question. Do u callous before rooting the cutting in water? I tried both & was successful. Still want to make sure.

I honestly have never rooted in water, I always go directly to soil. And I generally let callous for 3-4 days

How much water would you give a propagated leaf when you water it? I'm trying to save an old propagation that never really thrived. My pot is 6" in diameter, 3" deep. The edges of the leaves keep turning translucent and shriveling. Can't for the life of me tell if it's over or under watered! No sign of root rot but tends to get moldy on the top soil 🤔

Just got a orchid cactus. My concern is the pot it is in, a plastic hanging one. I feel it may be to wet and want to remove it from the pot it is in but still dont know or understand the dirt. also the leaves on my plant are hanging down not standing up.

many species tend to hang like that, so i wouldn't be concerned. definitely put holes in the bottom of the plastic pot for drainage

keeping it in a warm environment is the best way to get the roots going, heat underneath really does the trick

Wow I learned something new.. I have a huge plant as well and a few branches are quite woody.. I will try that.. the branch sticks up about 2 inches and has 2 Huge leaves. If I cut the branch down to soil level will new leaves grow off of it?

Hi. youll find that when the flowers finish, where they attach to the leaves, they start to get quite weak. you can literally just use your hands to break them off

@@plantvibrations thanks! I was given a potted cutting 4" long. That was Christmas 2018. It is now large like yours.The cutting was from a friends plant over 30 years old. Always bloomed white. Mine is a very bright pink and she is flabbergasted. I have mine in a clay pot that dries out quickly. Will probably begin to water more often. It is indoor 100% in North Carolina but per your video I may put it outdoors in the summer. Thanks again!

Hi! Ahh that is frustrating. Try refraining from watering all together while they’re budding up. I know the budding up process can take 2 weeks or so but they can handle that long with out water

I've been growing mine for about 6 years. I have 2 good sized pants and several medium that grew from cuttings. My question is..I have a5-6' shoot that grew in one of my big plants and now has a big leaf at the end. Do I make support for this stem or let it hang out trying it? I haven't had the flowers yet. They are outside only in warm months. Which here in western KY is about 4-6 months depending on how or cold sitting/fall. BTW- My leaves hang .. they don't stand up like yours

I got free Epiphyllum or different type of orchid cactus it was in pretty bad condition snipped off majority of leaves. How should I nurse it back to health? I'm going to repot it with perlite coconut chips charcoal. Should I leave it in dark for 2 weeks until it roots back? Then give it indirect light?

You can’t kill it in my experience. Those are not leaves but stems. I would research your particular sub species but in my experience I ignore them and dry them out quite a bit. I had “leaves“ sitting Around waiting to be composted that developed full sized flowers like the ones he’s showing so don’t assume the plant is dead because it appears to be

hi deb, i love hearing you've had blooms the last three years! re: the woody growth, i would definitely recommend cutting it out. i find that it looks leggy and unattractive when they get super woody. that being said, they won't likely create new growth from that section that you remove, its hard for plants to regenerate once they get to that woody stage. but the surrounding foliage will likely utilize that space pretty quickly. you can also take the tips (last 6" of growth) of the woody sections and plant those into the newly void sections, and that will keep those areas from looking bare. thats what i tend to do. i hope that helps

I live in Connecticut and have one! I got it 3 years ago from a clientclient who’s had the mother plant for over 20 years!! And I’ve only ever had one bloom so far 😢 I’m going to put it outside June 1st and see what happens tho! Wish me luck!

Where in PA are you? I live in East Stroudsburg, PA. Our local hardware store has one in his store window. It is huge and it foes bloom, even though it stays inside all year long. One of my neighbor's bought a piece from him and now has a big plant. It also blooms, it too is kept indoors. Thanks, Gerry 😎
