I pruned all my bad parts off a year ago , I fertilized mine early spring , every 2 weeks when it rained hard I would walk out and throw a few handfuls of 8-8-8 on it , now its huge ! Got a 12' tall 20' diameter monster of a tree, it's got lots of figs this year, blumed really early and took forever to get ripe but now I am making preserves for everyone ! You nailed the process for sure!

@@fpsfreak4079 I planted 4, 1 year old trees, 2 years ago. I got maybe 20 small figs last year. This year I think we might get 40-50, but all from 2 of the trees. Both Celeste's. My Brown Turkey and Chicago Hardy have produced 5-6 figs combined between 2 years. All the trees now have a bunch of green fruit, of which most will not ripen before frost. As they get bigger hopefully they will bear more and more.

Hey in another of your video about pruning fig trees you mention to take it down to 4-5 feet. But I hear here early in this video that you don't want to do that because you'll be pruning the fruit bearing branches. Can you clarify for me what I should do? My tree is huge and we cut it back several years ago. It was here when we bought our home, so it's not in the best area for letting it get too big. I'd like to do it again but don't want to make it stop the fruit producing.

I am glad I found you ! I am a Brit who lives in northern Portugal, and I have two fig trees - both possibly Pingo de Mel. (We just moved to this house two years ago btw) Now one ... is huge and lovely and the fruits last year were enormous and delicious ! However it's way to tall to be comfortable to pick so we are looking to shorten the branches right down .. as long as we haven't left it too late ? The leaves are just popping. The second tree ... was a poor little thing about 6 ft tall but with not many branches or leaves - because the previous owner had actually planted it almost underneath a giant Catalpa ! My gardener dug it up just two weeks ago, and replanted it for me in a much better location where not only will I be able to pick the fruit but will also give us plently of shade in the hot summer months. My soil is clay and is like rock in summer, and like terracotta mud in winter! My question about them both is .... DO I feed figs and if so when as I have heard two theories? One .. do not feed your fig (from the locals!) and TWO to feed it .. but I am not sure about what or when !! Thank you so much for your help, your video was very clear and helpful !
@TealStarSusan7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Organic Grow !! I did exactly that ... I gave it some good soil mixed with the very heavy clay. It has put out its leaves and although they are not huge yet, the tree does look happy! I'm in zone 7 (Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania). I'm starting to figure out what to do with the fig. I didn't prune the tree because I never knew when to prune it. So, I should prune the tree in late February and clear out the small 'suckers'. I want to prune back the heavier branches next February. My friend who allowed me to take a cutting said that her fig is cut back every late winter. Hers is massive and spreads out over a ten foot ground area if not more. It was the first time I ever had a fig and I love the flavor. How far back do I prune the thing? I know to prune back to to one of the little buds but is it a foot off the ground, a yard off the ground? Lastly, I guess I can take these cuttings indoors and prepare them to root at this time? Thanks for getting back to me so quickly from my first comment.

Hi. Thanks for this information. Do you have any experience with dividing a fig tree? My friend has a massive one she wants removed from her yard, and I'd like to try to grow the root chunks into trees of my own. Do you think this will work? All anyone ever talks about with figs is cuttings, but what about root cuttings? Since it sends out suckers, wouldn't that make it more of a rhizome? And rhizomes can usually recover from a little surgery, right?

Jim, can you root bottom branches that are removed/pruned from the main stalk and produce fruiting trees? I was given a young single stem brown turkey fig last year and planted it in a huge container. It is doing very well and produced a fig or two last year. It has a few lateral branches coming out from low on the trunk that I'm wondering if I should prune off. Also, Could you dig up small trees coming up from the roots of a persimmon tree and plant it out with success? I have tried this latter procedure with persimmons with no luck. I'd appreciate any suggestions and advice. Love your channel and instructional videos.

Hello Mr. putnam, I have a question about my blueberry trees, two actually, their leaves started turning yellow a couple of weeks ago. They both started to have very green leaves and when they have all the leaves in their branches, one turned yellow quickly while the other produced flowers then berries but when the berries are ok in sizes , the leaves also are turning yellow. I thought maybe root rot or not enough water. But I water them almost everday. The other trees are doing ok. Just the two that are older, four-five years old that are turning bad. Can you please, give me an advice on what to do? Thank you so much for your time and sharing your knowledge about fruit trees.
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
Yellowing on the new growth would indicate root damage of some kind. Most likely overwatering, but it could be a pest of some kind. Like a vole doing root damage.
