We inherited a mature Fig tree in our backyard, never had a fig before moving to this new house, but I'm happy it's here!

Jim, I live in Missouri in zone 6 and it gets down to zero and sometimes below zero but is rare. This past spring I decided to plant my 4 year old Chicago Hardy in the ground so looking forward to see if it makes it. I winterized it very good. However, I am wanting to do the same with some other figs I have going. I have researched cold hardy figs and found a few like celeste, texas everbearing, LSU purple, Olympian, and little ruby and wanted to know if you would plant in ground any of these fig trees in zone 6 with winter protection. In your video you have celeste and brown turkey.

All four of our figs (different varieties including Chicago) died this year. Perhaps it was too cold and windy in western NC? They were fine the first two years we had them.

Jim have you found an effective way to prevent squirrels from thieving your figs? Also, do you think it's important to incorporate our native clay soil with the soil conditioner when backfilling, or would a good DIY mix with no clay work well?

Also amend and never replace. It actually crates an underground clay pot that doesn't drain. Good question.

They have to be covered with netting for the squirrels. I don't think they like the figs. They pull them off bite them and drop them

Hello sir are u planting start from the seeds?

Jim, I decided to plant my Celeste fig tree in the ground about a week ago because I thought we were past the freeze zone. I looks like 3 out of the next 5 days it is going to dip down like 28 degrees. Will a Celeste be ok at that temp.

Great Video! My two fig shrubs died in last winter (I am in NC) but shoots came up from the ground later in the spring. They are growing fine now, but what care should be taken for winter so that I don't lose the new growth? Right now they are in a container but I want to put them in ground. When is the best time and what winter care it needs when in ground?
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
They are definitely better off in the ground as soon as possible.

Hi Jim, I just planted a Chicago fig tree about three weeks ago. I've noticed that brown spots have popped up on the leafs. Do you know what this may mean? Great video. Thanks.

It's been two years so I'm sure you already have the answer, but just in case. I had the same problem and I read that this is from root rot and you might be over watering

@@taven1451 yes it’s been some time but all is good. At this points I’ve had no fruit. I’m thinking maybe this is my summer . Thought?

@@Bunkysworkshop Hey, not sure! I'm just starting our. The only reason I knew the answer to the original problem was because I just went through the same thing! I feel like there's so much conflicting information online about this so it's hard to get the right info lol

@@taven1451 agree on that for sure.

What's your zone
@bjackson303034 жыл бұрын
Only 6 foot spacing? Maybe in 7a but in 8, double that or more. Figs can get huge, too big to net if you do not prune. 😜

huh... my planted figs fruited for me after 1 year.
