I am growing a lemon drop mangosteen in Spring hill, FL. It's a young seedling, maybe a foot tall and hoping it will survive here! I love your video and hope to see more of your videos. I'll check out your other videos to see what else might grow in zone 9A/9B. I'm on the border.

If it is G. brasiliensis, it will be cold sensitive. Slightly less cold sensitive than a Coffee, but where you are it will need a lot of protection. G. intermedia is a bit less cold sensitive. Where you are, I'd recommend a G. humilis, G. xanthochymus, G. livingstonei or G. "vleerackeri". All of those are much more cold tolerant.

Irma was bad here too. I rode it out rather than leave. I don't have flooding issues here, so I didn't really lose many plants, but boy was there a lot of damage. Every banana I had was shredded and toppled. I'm glad you are rebuiding your garden.

I love G. intermedia. The fruit is almost as good as G. brasiliensis, but they fruit earlier, and can take more cold. I'd love to grow purple mangosteens but in Tampa, that project would be doomed to failure. I hope yours turns around. Cheers

I have a G. humilis in the ground for 5-6 years now. Thriving here in 9b. About 7-8 feet with a nice spread. Very pretty tree. No flowers yet, unfortunately. Hopefully this will be the year. I will definitely make a video when it does. This tree has been surprisingly cold tolerant. I've never covered it, even on frost nights, and it has never lost a single leaf to cold.

Thank you for the informative video Randy. I live on the wet side of Hawaii, and my neighbor just gave me some of his lemon drops. They are sour, and I'm not sure what variety they are. But you've inspired me to keep the seeds and grow my own!

The true lemon drop mangosteens are G. intermedia. They are more sour than the fruit in this video (G. brasiliensis), but they are really similar. Even G. intemedia fruits will sweeten up nicely, as long as you leave them on the tree until they pop off with the lightest touch. They will be more dark yellow at that point. Honestly, I pick the fruits up off the ground, as long as the skins are still intact, and yellow or orange (but not brown). Those are the sweetest fruits. That is true for both species. In either case, your seedlings should start producing for you, very quickly.

Sorry, no. People have been trying to grow purple mangosteens in Florida for well over a century, and no one that I am aware of has ever had success. They can be grown in Puerto Rico, or Jamaica, but not here, unfortunately. They're so delicious.

I’m here watching you again . I’ve the lemon drop mangosteen Brasiliense for 1 year not fruiting and not looking happy 😢 so I’m trying to fix the problem. One was in the shade and the other on sun they both look the same. I’ve them in pots and I’m starting to wonder if they don’t like my soil. But your video is very helpful. Thanks

That's awesome. I have a vanilla orchid in the ground growing up a Voacanga tree. It's been there for 2 years now. No flowers yet, but it was very tiny when I planted it, and it has grown a lot since then. Good luck! Cheers

These seeds are highly recalcitrant, meaning that once they are out of the fruit, they must be planted right away or stored damp, until they can be planted, which should be ASAP. If the seeds are allowed to dry out, they do not live for very long. Once in soil, they usually take about a month to 6 weeks to sprout. Somjetimes I get straglers that pop up several months after they were planted.

​@@ZonaFigs Awesome. Mine was a tiny, less than one year old seedlng. They pick up steam once they start branching. It bloomed for the first time, less than two years later. The Garcinia intermedia I purchased at that same time, same size, bloomed for the first time, less than one year after purchasing them. So, both species are quite precocious. When I say bloomed for the first time, it was maybe three or four flowers, with one or two fruits set, and I'd get two or three flushes like that per year, for a couple of years before they started producing well. Now there is nearly continuous production from Spring through Fall. I'm also growing G. humilis, G. xanthochymus, G. aristata, G. livingstonei, and Luc's Garcinia. None of those have bloomed yet, but the G. humilis has got to be getting close, as it has been in the ground for 6 years and is taller than me despite being topped several times. Very bushy and healthy. The trunk is 3 inches in diameter. Fingers crossed for this season. Good luck!

Achacha is a good choice where you are. Garcinia xanthochymus should survive your winters. I've never had the fruit. It's supposed to be delicious, but very sour. Another choice for you would be "Luc's Garcinia".

As far as I'm aware, no one has ever been successful fruiting Garcinia mangostana here in Florida. Not even in South Florida. That doesn't mean it should not be attempted, but it means I won't be doing it here. There are way too many other trees that would be better candidates to grow here, and my space is highly limited at this point, so, I have to be a great deal more choosy with how I use that space. I encourage you to try, and let me know how it goes. I've had the fruit in indonesia, and trust me, I'd be growing them if I thought I'd get fruit out of it. They're amazing.

​@@jamestropicals8262 Yeah, me too, back many years ago. The fruits I was getting them from, had been refrigerated though. That species is entirely apomictic (there are no males), so the seeds should ve viable if you can find fruits that werre never in any kind of cold storage. The literature on Garcinias (scant at best, and frequently incorrect) usually says that the species other than mangostana are dioecious and need both a male and a female to set fruit, and while that will certainly be true for sexual reproduction, I am becoming increasingly convinced that most of the species are at least capable of apomixis, and possibly all species are capable of it.

As far as I'm aware, no one has ever been successful growing G. mangostana in Floirida. Many have tried. I've never tried, personally. It grows in Hawaii. There are many other varieties that are also delicious that are much easier to grow outside of the tropics.
