Do you recommend germinating seeds, soaking for a few (5-7) days, in lower Fairfield county Connecticut ? Will have to mix the damp germinated soil with dry ingredients...use Peat moss? Fertilizer? Please advise. I have a very bumpy, un-level side lawn as had to dig up yard to install water draining Cultech systems. So, will order about 20 yards of topsoil...I have about 5500 square feet of lawn/yard area that I will resoil and reseed. Further, any need to mix in sand? Lots of rocks, both big and small, in yard....Connecticut tings' 😊 Thanks.

No to the need for sand and God NO to the pre-germination. That is the stupidest thing we youtubers ever put out there to people. Just water and keep it damp.

I am trying this myself. I actually started in mid May. I had grass growing then half died from intense sunlight. Even if I watered it like crazy. So what I have learned is that the excessive watering did help with seed germination, but the intense sun will eventually kill the baby grass. But then I covered them with a nest. Now no the baby grass stop dying.

I wasn't sure whether it's entirely safe to put down Tenacity on extremely young grass, so I asked Google, "when in the fall do i put down tenacity on lawn?" and got this: Whether you want to overseed in the fall, re-seed bare areas or remove grass weeds like creeping bentgrass from your turf, Tenacity can help. With few restrictions around applications, Tenacity may be applied to labeled turfgrasses anytime up to or during seeding, but prior to emergence and four weeks after emergence.

That's correct. Should not be applied to newly germinated grass.

@MadManInMyVisions3 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you for the video. I was wondering how hot was the temperature when you germinated the seed? I was thinking of germinating a perennial ryegrass, but the drought and the everyday temperatures in my region are an average of 90° per day. The daily 90° temperatures will last until mid October. Should I wait? I know the ideal germination temperature should be 50°-80°, but I won't see those temperatures until later in November and I don't want to start a seeding project close to the first frost date. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you
@JasonSeiberlich3 жыл бұрын
It was in the 90s when I did this project fairly consistently. Just requires a little more care once it germinates so the temperature doesn't cook the new grass.
@MadManInMyVisions3 жыл бұрын
@@JasonSeiberlich Thank you for the response. I have bad compacted clay soil that's acidic due to several pine tress in my front yard. Most of my perennial ryegrass and fine fescue is either dead, or dormant. The only thing that doesn't die is the couch grass, or quack grass, which I'm a fan of, because it keeps parts of the lawn green and doesn't die. Ironically, it's a perennial too and tough as nails. 1. Would you recommend tilling the lawn? I think my lawn will need more than aeration, because of the poor soil and compaction. 2. Should I ammend the soil? I'm looking at low 90s for the next three weeks. 3. Should I start? Thank you

Probably quite a bit to unpack there. If you want to send me a message on FB or instagram we can try and talk through a strategy. Same name.

I ultimately plan on removing the top two to three inches of clay soil and mixing it with organic compost and top soil, before laying the seed.

So I killed my grass in spots trying to kill weeds, now I will have to re plant. It’s currently 80-90 degrees. Should I plant grass?
@JasonSeiberlich3 жыл бұрын
Depends on how big and grass type. If you're in a northern climate with one of the creeping grasses and the area is less than say maybe basketball size, just let it fill in. Kentucky bluegrass will do that too. Bigger area you can seed any time (or sod if you're warm season) it's just more attention is required in hotter temps. More water, more care, etc.

Ok. So you're in a climate more meant for warm season grass. Bermuda, zoysia, st augustine, centipede, some others. There is Socal Lawn and Order (youtube channel name) that's growing Kentucky bluegrass in southern california. But that's going to be higher effort as cool season grasses are not really meant for that type of climate.

Did you mention a 90 minute watering time for each of the heavy rounds? I planted my lawn yesterday ( temperature around 37) and covered the entire area with peat moss, but i am only watering for 20 minutes three times a day Should I increase it?
@JasonSeiberlich3 жыл бұрын
For seeding it's different. Water less but more often to keep things wet. With established lawns you want to try and get around a half inch of water down as a good rule. How long that takes will depend on sprinklers, pressure, flow rate, etc so you'd need to start your sprinkler and simply time how long it takes to put that much water down.
@TruScapeLawnLandscapeMgmt4 жыл бұрын
Does pouring a light layer of grass youve cut over the area help? Or ruin?
@JasonSeiberlich4 жыл бұрын
I've never seen anyone use clippings. Logically I'd think you could, but would recommend going very very thin as they can be heavy and smothering. Would also only want to use them from a weed and disease free area of the yard. I may say not doing anything probably safer than using grass clippings. If you do experiment, let me know.

The specific products aren't super important in comparison to the process. But seed superstore is where the seed is from, then any generic 10-10-10 or starter fertilizer from your local hardware store. The backpack and hose end sprayers are also generic home depot (Scott's and ortho respectively). Sprinkers are hunter mp rotators with the mp30 head.

I would have agreed with this assessment at the time of this video. However, I think the issue is that it doesn't kill purslane, which was the weed problem in this area. I didn't do it in the second section that I did and the weed problem was SO MUCH WORSE. So, I think it actually may be super helpful. Just not for purslane.

Tenacity is great, it just doesn’t kill specific types of weeds. It doesn’t take care of spurge weeds which is what looks like what you have (so do I). My only issue with Tenacity is it doesn’t do that great with Bermuda. It whitens it along with the weeds, but they will come back if you water it throughly.
