You talk about doing a partial rehab if needed and overseeding to work with what you have. I did this a few years ago with a thatch rake to rip up all the weeds and other trash growing before scalping the remains. It works! A 20lb bag of big box seed spread across a 50x75 area with 20-30% existing grass with a heavy application on the worst area and light overseeding on the little grass remaining. Pulled the thatch rake over the area after seeding to get soil contact and did nothing the rest of the late summer/fall. In the spring, it was growing and now have a fairly nice lawn that once looked like the sand-lot movie.

Thank you so much, Al. I learned so much from this video. I really appreciate that. You don’t always recommend the torched earth strategy for fixing a lawn. It seems like that’s all you get with the lawn groups on Facebook. Everyone recommends that you glyphosate and start over.

Great wealth of information. Thank you so much! This is the first video I’m hearing specifically to not spray the Mesotrione after the new baby grass has germinated. I guess that’s why they say it can be applied at “time of seeding”.
@LawnsAcrossAmerica
@LawnsAcrossAmerica 3 ай бұрын
yes exactly right. It won't harm the seed itself, but new grass growing can be negatively impacted so for sure, spray before germination occurs

Last fall, I overseeded with Blue Envy KGB from Twin Cities Seed Co on Aug 27. There were a few bare spots that had nice sprouts within a week. I thought the heat that we had here in the Twin Cities was going to be my undoing. Had a few days near 100 degrees. I was generous with water for the first week 4 waterings of 7 minutes per day.

We can seed in August because in Florida, a lot of the older homes have deep artesian wells and commercial grade irrigation systems. I can water my lawn 4 times a day so I can seed bahia whenever I want. Just won't do it after September since I think it won't grow fast after Sept. Bahia does thin out overtime and should be overseeded each Spring. If we feed it, we use a low nitrogen type.

I shared this to my neighborhood group. Some have been getting letters from the HOA. I did my pre-emergent in Nov and Dec last year and I still had POA in March. I guess we have to hit it both in the fall and spring.

I've been, as careful as can be, using my trusty hand weeding tool, removing crabgrass. I will be dethatching and leveling my lawn and don't want to prevent spreading more crabgrass seeds. This episode has me questioning any use of topsoil to fill the barespots. What else can I use?
@LawnsAcrossAmerica
@LawnsAcrossAmerica 2 ай бұрын
for sure don't use top soil, it is full of junk. For leveling, it's best to use straight sand. you can mix in 50% compost if you like, not required.

Been seeing more content about pre-germinating your grass seed by pouring several pounds in mesh sacks then soaking in buckets of water off and on until you see it first germinate. Then spread it out and mix with peat moss to dry it, then spread. Maybe better for small area or patching.

If you live in Northern US and have a large yard that’s 5,000 plus sq ft and don’t have an inground sprinkler system should you even waste time with complex lawncare like overseeding and fertilizing?
@LawnsAcrossAmerica
@LawnsAcrossAmerica 2 ай бұрын
you sure can. My lawn in Indiana was 3,000 in front, 1,500 on the sides and 2,500 in back and I managed it by dragging hoses around. Never was an issue, just took a little more planning is all. You could also decide to just keep the front lawn green and growing all season and let the back go dormant, making it a smaller area to care for. I know lots of folks who do that.

Hopefully you see this question. When people say "safe to use after X mows" etc. Is that just general term based on standard amount of time? I reel mow my rye/bluegrass so my overseed gets a second mow sometimes after 2.5-3weeks. So would i be safe? Or does it really mean wait 45-60 days?
@TheLawnCareNut
@TheLawnCareNut 3 ай бұрын
yes I would wait - give it that full 45 days before spraying anything, even if that is 4 or 5 mows for you. Better safe than sorry.

I am in the transition zone and it looks like St. Augustine/ Bermuda would dominate except i have large tree with shade, so i think TTTF will work but warm season grass will not work it just dies . So what do I do in the full sun areas cuz the cool season grass cant keep up with Bermuda and St. Augustine . But i have shade, i currently have hard pack clay and moss. Have been moving in topsoil through summer to prepare for this fall will try TTTF

Alan, I am currently dealing with lawn fungus and have been cycling between my group 3 & 11 fungicides to try to at best bring it to a halt and at worse try to control it. If I were to proceed with my fall Reno/overseeding would the fungus contaminate my new seed? I don’t want to invest time and money on seeding that won’t have a chance to survive because of the fungus. Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated! Tnx.
@TheLawnCareNut
@TheLawnCareNut 3 ай бұрын
good question and one I am addressing in this next week's podcast, short answer is probably not going to affect your new seed - the weather will shift in about 3-4 weeks and stop all fungus and that is when you'll be seeding too

I have an issue with crabgrass. I spray it goes away but then it comes back in a different spot. It like what the heck is going on. I’m going to spray something different at 1 ounce per gallon today. It is getting out of control seriously. I live in the north Texas area next to an open field. I have common Bermuda grass which is thick and the stolens are growing vertices and not attaching to my soil. That may be my problem.

Legend lawn care wisdom - as always folks yeayoubetcha. 8:48 Do you even need to oversee? 30% rule. Especially with kbg, zoysia creeping grasses.. It will grow back - well taken care of. So it changes to plant care and soil care > seeding... even with hot zones or bare patches. So the question becomes - how to direct and provide soil for the grass to fill those weak zones. check for rocky soil in those hot areas too or sprinkler water regimen.. My issue - grass dying off from storm water run-off low areas. I've switched from seeding to plant and zone and soil area health case by case. Who knows some awesome preferred, non creeping water loving grasses and plants!? haha heeelp
