🌲 In its native land the Japanese Black Pine is often used as an ornamental in parks and gardens. The branches of this conical pine have a unique, horizontal growing pattern, resulting in a layered look. The needles are dark green, grow in pairs, and are long at three to five inches. One of the most attractive features of this bonsai is the grayish bark with

I recently bought black pine seeds, after soaking in water for 24 hours can I just plant the seeds in pots or is the moist paper and bag absolutely necessary? Thanks in advance.

Hello sir, Japanese black pine seeds need 2-3 weeks of cold stratification. without stratification treatment, the seed germination process becomes very hard and the germination rate becomes very low. It's always best to do cold stratification. keep in mind, in that period you need to keep the temperature around 1-5 °c (below freezing).and also make sure to keep the seed without drying out during that time. here are some more information bonsaitonight.com/2016/08/17/grow-japanese-black-pine-seed/

I've never done cold stratification and always have nearly 100% germination. I collect my seeds from local trees in the winter though. Maybe the seeds get cold inside the pine cones...
