I give you an update on my large 'Red Beefsteak' for the 'Grow Off' I challenged CaliKim to. I provide an in depth explanation of what a tomato sucker is and how to identify them. Pruning is an art not an exact science or necessary. I explain how and why to do it. I discuss the principles of top dressing your tomatoes when fruit appears and the importance of spraying on an established routine.

I'm following this contest. Both of you are making this fun while I learn. I think it may be a tie, going to use stacks tomorrow my tomato plant is leaning al over the place, since we got so much rain this week, only keeping one sucker on my beefsteak since I have 4 plants. Thank you so much so sharing all your knowledge, I have learned so much. This is my second years gardening I watch some of your videos 2 and 3 times. From seed planting to care during growing, and pest control, to compost and beyond. I watch CaliKim's as well . I'm looking forward to seeing the end results. I wished you guys had planted more than one in case some critter got to them. I know you guys will keep a good watch out . Thanks again for sharing it means so much to me.

Another good tip to add that I just recently heard about is picking/ripening indoors if you live in an area, like the deep south, where insects frequently ruin ALL large tomatoes as they ripen. I stupidly lost all of this years paste tomato crop because I thought they had to "vine ripen" and even tulle netting wouldn't keep the bugs from the fruit. Just found out other southern gardeners have the same issue and simply ripen the fruit indoors.

Found you thru CaliKim & the tomatoes challenge. Really enjoying your content! I’m in central/Nor Cal. I have every bug there is & was able to learn a little about using water as a application tool w/diatomaceous earth from your 2017 video! I pretty much just prune all the useless low branches & any congestion that’s effecting air flow since plant disease is a huge problem here. I did learn so much from you in this video! Didn’t know about baking soda or cutting down the nitrogen! You’re correct that pruning is an art one cultivates thru years of growing tomatoes in their specific garden. But, I also didn’t know that I could propagate the suckers! We’ve had high winds since February, so couldn’t get new veggies planted yet. I don’t start tomatoes from seed, as I don’t have a place indoors or a greenhouse for doing so. Plan on buying a substantially sized plant today. Fingers crossed that the heat will help me catch up! Thank you so much for such a thorough video!

I'm a new subscriber and enjoying your gardening videos, especially tomatoes, and have used several of your methods. I've gardened on and off for years depending on where we live. I'd like to mention about pruning my tomatoes; from my experience I prune my plants(s) that have diseased/infested leaves as I go along, cleaning the blades with isopropyl alcohol, or soap to help keep leaf spot, etc. from spreading.

Great information, I have never been successful in producing fruiting tomato plants until now. Blight, disease and lack of knowledge got the best of my efforts as well as the climate I live in (foggy cool coastal summer in the PNW). We took our tax return this past winter and put it into building a solid permanent greenhouse with deep raised beds inside for growing tomatoes, yes my tomatoes have a home of their own, money well spent! Mid-June and all 8 plants are over 5 feet and producing tomatoes, none ripe yet but the plants are loaded with fruit and I couldn't be more excited. I have followed your advice as well as a few other youtube channels on how to grow tomatoes so I am truly grateful for you and the others, thanks for helping me be successful in growing my favorite fruit/veggie. QUESTION????? what is the ration of baking soda to water for the spray?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great set up. So glad to help! 1 or 2 tablespoons per gallon for the baking soda. Always test spray too. Wait 48 hours for leaf damage. It is good practice and record you formulation for each variety. Good luck!

My Dad had wonderful tomatoes. He would prune all lower branches so none would touch the grown. Something else that he used that I have not heard anyonelse mention is cotton seed meal, preferably the chunks. He would put these in the bottom of each hole when he planted the tomatoes. ☮️❤️💥🌈🌎😇😇😇😇😏

It is the tip of any stem that has set flower. You cut the tip and is slows growth of that stem. New suckers will come out sides of leaves and the will start to grow but it generally slows growth.

Great series! Hello from Saskatchewan. I planted my beef steak, May 27th, they were around 8” high. They are now hitting the top of a standard tomato cage. Hopefully I can actually produce tomatoes! Lol I like your approach to suckers; everyone seems to get rid of them with such bias;) I find a lot of my blossoms originate from suckers? Anyways, I’m wondering if you have tried using diluted milk to increase calcium to your tomatoes? Thanks

So I haven't yet. I am trying milk sprays for fungus. But I prefer calcium nitrate. It is calcium carbonate mixed with nitric acid so it reacts and creates calcium nitrate. It creates a readily absorbable calcium. Not organic but I am fine with that when I understand the reaction. Ill do more on the milk after testing it for a while. Bottom line for fungus they say, you want milk that is not homogenized. I don't know if that is true or not.

Hi Gary. Love, love, love your videos. Question, can I grow kales, collards, and brussel sprouts in the same bed as Tomatoes? I’m short on space in my yard and raised beds. I have two 4x4 raised beds that are full and one 4x12 raised bed where I have 2 tomato plants planted on the north side of the bed and I want to put my brassicas there too but someone told me I couldn’t- yet last year my I grew purple curly kale in the same 4x4 bed as my 3 tomato plants and the all seemed to do well? I have some 5 gallon pails I could use if I need to but thought I would ask first. I have some potting soil, compost, and peat moss or coir, but not very much vermiculite or perlite left. If you do suggest the buckets, how would you suggest I mix up a soil for the buckets from what I listed? I look forward to your help and reading your reply. Maybe Kale is different than collards and brussel sprouts?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 6 жыл бұрын
Kale yes. You can tuck in a few plants. Brussels get huge so I would give them their own bed. Collards probably like the kale. In 5 gallons you can do 1 collard or kale plant per 5 gallons. Brussels get to large for that size. Good luck and thanks for watching!

I don't think the tomatoes will get big because I have lots of flowers. Have you heard of using Tums as a calcium spray? (BER) prevention. I tried it. I had this issue last year. This year I added lime to the mix of compost in all of my beds so hopefully I won't have this issue.

Hi! I just became your new subbie. I’m having some problems with my tomatoes rottening on the bottom before they get ripe enough to pick. Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 6 жыл бұрын
Appreciated! So that is called blossom end rot. Typically the roma type tomatoes get it bad and it is more prevalent in container tomatoes. Check out BER or blossom end rot on my channel. Adding calcium is key and even watering is key. You can add lime which can change pH or gypsum which doesn't change pH to your soil around your tomatoes and water it in well. They have calcium. Typically add lime at end of year and soil has it for next year. But in this case I sell Calcium Nitrate on my seed shop you make a mix and water your plants it get calcium to the plant quickly or you can by Blossom End Rot Spray on line. It is more expensive but same as making it on your own. www.therustedgarden.com

I generally enjoy your videos, but I'm not sure how it teaches "how to grow large beefsteak tomatoes." Almost all your advice is relevant to cherry or medium tomatoes. Almost all KZbin gardeners agree it's ok to leave suckers on cherry tomatoes because the smaller tomato requires less energy (so leaving suckers gives you a better harvest). But, for BIG beefsteak type tomatoes, it is generally agreed that singe-stemming is best to focus the energy on the fruit instead of less productive suckers. Do you have any evidence to suggest the contrary?!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
Well maybe this one wasn't clear. But the lack of leaves reduces energy for tomato growth. Any size tomato. The tomatoes themselves require a lot of energy. For really large tomatoes, leaves, and fruit reduction, get to big tomatoes for like contests. But let's chalk this one up to lack of clarity. Thanks.
