How to Grow Microgreens - Full Walkthrough with TIPS & TRICKS - Nasturtium - On The Grow

💥This is our step-by-step guide for growing Nasturtium Empress of India Microgreens with Tips & Tricks along the way! For this Microgreen tutorial we use a hydroponic growing medium called Coco Coir that is similar in texture to soil... You can use this same methods for growing Nasturtium in soil, but you won't add nutrients like we do to the water.
We also decided to turn this Full Walk Through grow into a little test to compare the growth of Nasturtium using two different hydroponic nutrient sources, MasterBlend tomato blend and Ocean Solution 2-0-3

According to my friends, who grow nasturtiums, they prefer poor soil and will flower when they're not given too many nutrients. So adding nutrients=more greens. Fewer to no nutrients=more flowers. At least that's what my friends have experienced. Thank you for your video!

Thank you so much for your videos and teaching us the intricate details of microgreens for health! Can all varieties of Nasturtiums be grown (1) as microgreens (2) hydroponically? Some are drawf and some are trailing varieties. My daughter has lost every hair on her body at age 7 and I've read that nasturtiums are an ancient remedy for hair loss. When I grow this crop for flowers I found it takes alot of time from seed to flower. So I put them out in a seperate pot, on my deck, in full sun, for 1 month, water as needed, with nutrients, once a week. I don't give them space inside for the wait time, yes you must condition them to be outside over a couple days for full sun. Great video. Thankyou. Blessings.

I just grew a tray of of Nasturtium a few weeks ago and they are delicious. They have such a kick that I wasn't expecting. I grew them with beets in just a mesh plasic trays with a paper towel and weight on top until they germinated. Someone suggested soaking them to make germination go quicker so that's my next test.

@@OnTheGrow paper towels are a great grow medium or moisture covering in my climate because of its ability to wick. I use paper towels in most of my hydroponic grow tests. I do tests like you guys for any new microgreens seeds that I try but I use paper towel, no medium and cress plates as my media tests.

Great question!! We have noticed that by keeping great airflow and making sure to not overwater, we will not have issues with pest. They thrive when you give them overly wet soil or poor airflow. If we do ever get a problem with them, we will turn on one of those bug zappers with the blue light that attracts the bugs. It is rare that we have to use it though... maybe once a month we will need it. Thank you for the support!! 🤗🌱🌱

Thank you so much for the support! We do keep it in an open box, but we have so much airflow in our space that we’ve never had issues with mold or pathogens. We keep it on a shelf that has a liner on it to protect it from debris falling in, but still allows a lot of airflow. As long as you have a little air moving, you shouldn’t have any issues! 🤗🌱🤗

Do you have any suggestions for dealing with mold? About every 3rd time we have to toss out our crop and start again. We've tried baking the dirt and that seems to help but it stinks and it's not perfect. We are hoping to find a way that we don't have to use brand new media every time.

It's hard to control mold when reusing medium... It is just a natural part of the process since there is decaying material in the medium. You can try a strong hydrogen-peroxide spray or I have even heard of soaking medium in hydrogen-peroxide. I would suggest finding a good local soil that you can buy in bulk. We can get a truckbed full of local organic soil for only $50.00 and that would last us a few hundred trays. We just prefer to have a bit more fun and grow hydroponically since there is more to play with.

Great question! It could potentially be that fact that the middle section is getting the most light because it has all three lights versus the edges which usually only get two. We notice that the front and back get around 4,500 lux at the top of the tray versus the middle which gets 6,000 lux. Thank you for the support! We greatly appreciate it!

The edges of flats dry down first. The middle of flats are more consistently moist (and also where disease problems often start). My experience is in plugs and finished crops - might not apply to Microgreens.

We have tried unsuccessfully at wheatgrass a few times... We don't get the best germination with it and haven't figured out the right soak time. We will try it again soon, but it is one of those "easy" crops that we can't seem to figure out!

Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day. We have a 220v line ran from our breaker box straight to our trailer. Long answer: My suggestion is to look around your local area to see what the prices are... Also, know that you can really sell the product for whatever you think is fair... We have local growers that sell theirs for $5.00 for 4oz of product at nearby farmers markets. We sell ours generally for $10 for 4oz of product. We know that we use all organic ingredients and put a lot of care and time into our product and brand so we know they fetch a higher value. Look to see if there other people selling microgreens at grocery store, farmers markets, do you see them at restaurants, so on and so forth... What are they selling them for? Are they local? Are people buying them? If you see someone buying them, don’t feel afraid to ask them why they wanted to buy them. There are free marketing lesson from people who are moving the product... How are they displaying their products? What are they saying to the customer? So on and so forth. Then figure out your product and value your time fairly to see what you feel is fair. There are a lot of ways you can sell microgreens so be creative...

That was way hot on the MasterBlend. Normal usage is closer to 1/2 tsp MasterBlend, 1/2 tsp Calcium Nitrate, 1/4 tsp epsom salt per gallon of water.

Well, per the instructions on the master lens, this was a normal dosage which is why we went with that amount. When we bring a new nutrient into our space, we generally follow the instructions first! It worked out well enough and it’s just an experiment!

Rubbing alcohol will kill your microgreens and make your soil toxic. Hydrogen peroxide is basically just water with an extra oxygen molecule.

After spraying the peroxide for mold, you watered which would essentially dilute the peroxide and wash it out of the soil.

Guys, how do you price your microgreens? How much you spend per tray and how much do you earn?

Great question! Generally, we try to get a minimum of $15.00 per tray. Our cost are generally about $1.80 per tray in seed/medium/nutrients. It can be done for much cheaper and some crops get a lot more expensive with seed. It really depends on how you are selling them and who you are selling to. Also, how you grow obviously plays a factor. Organic grown can fetch a better price. We are experimenting with growing using bulk compost and that takes our medium cost from $1.00 down to $0.09 per tray. It can get pretty deep on pricing, but we generally aim for that $15.00 minimum per tray. Some trays fetch $45.00 or higher if you break it up into small quantities and have the right market for it.
