@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
We are using the 3% with great results so far! 74F is actually great for sunflowers... Our average temperature has been dropping in our grow space because of winter and we have had slower germination on our sunflowers because of that... At 75-80F in summer is when they grew the best and now at 67-73F they are germinating and growing a little slower.

Also I’m not sure if it’s for the sake of education but your growing methods are WAY more labor intensive than what need be. When one is growing 100 trays there is no way that watering can be done twice/day or even h2o2 spray everyday this seems good for the home grower or really small scale grower though.

So using an amended coco based product that has nutrients immediately available will hinder my end results correct? I’m doing it as a control, then I’m going to test various alternatives such as bottom watering with my aquaponics water & using my local salt derived nutrients. I’m sure the type of nutrient is less important than the quantity and time it’s introduced. I remember hearing you shouldn’t use nutrients until they are exposed to light? Is that a good general guideline?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
We have noticed that using nutrients too soon can negatively impact the germination. We prefer to introduce nutrients once the plants are introduced to the light. I think Corey from Corey'sCave introduces full strenth Maxi-gro to his grow mediums and gets some pretty solid results. We should do a test on this soon to confirm, but for now, we've had great results when only using nutrients once the plants are in the light.

Hello! Yes so we have a video that shows our grow space and I believe we talk about it. We keep our grow space between 75-80F and the humidity 50% or below. Is regulated by a ac/heat unit that's installed, and a dehumidifier. Currently since it's getting colder outside we also have a portable heater that's also set to 71F to help maintain it better. Plus we have a giant fan located in the front center of the room that helps circulate the air along with the fans on each shelf. Thank you so much!, We really appreciate it and your support 😀

Thank you for another great video. With regard to the trays, is the middle green tray a different grade or material? I've read comments from others, not here, about chemicals from trays leaching into the product. Thanks again for the time you take to share your knowledge with us!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the support! It is the same material which is a PP (Polypropylene plastic). PP is generally a pretty safe option and doesn't leech like a PVC or something would. Technically most leeching occurs when plastics are subjected to high heat or high UV radiation. We don't really let them get either in this space because our lights don't put off a lot of UV and the temperature is controlled. Growing outdoors would be slightly more concerning though and I wish that there were more non-plastic growing options for that. Hope that helps!

Awesome Video, very well constructed, and very informational. Only three things I do differently. 1)I only spray the Food Grade Hydrogen peroxide on Day 1, thats it.. 2) I don't use Fans, because if a batch does catch mold I find it spreads the mold spores to the other Trays. 3 I never Spray from the top after the germination process, because I find that when you do from the top and not the bottom, it promotes mold. This is only my methods. If it works for you, Awesome.

You guys are Ah.Mazing! Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication. I have been researching microgreens for the past 4 months and have not yet started because some of the information out there seems a bit convoluted or confusing, but you guys really have a great teaching gift that lays the information out in a concise and understandable way. Because of your videos I am placing my orders (through your links obviously 😉) this weekend to get the ball rolling for our microgreens business! One question I’m not sure about if you could point me in the direction for the answer: our water supply is through a well and ran through a water softener. Do I still need to set up a filtration system to use this source or can I use it as is and just adjust the Ph? Thanks for any information you may have on this subject!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your support!! We really appreciate you shopping through our affiliate links, that helps us continue doing this! So excited to hear how your business progresses!! I'd likely just use the well water since it is likely very fresh. I'd try growing with it as-is and see how your microgreens turn out. If they don't grow well on the first trys, it could be the water and then I would begin playing with pH and everything. Generally, they will do just fine with unchanged water. If you notice issues, get a gallon or so of a filtered water from the grocery or something and try growing two trays side by side, one with your water, one with the filtered. You can also try checking the pH on both to make sure they are fairly even. I bet your well water has a lot of great minerals in it that would help with growth though... Hope that helps!

Could I just use bulk black oil sunflower seeds meant for bird feed?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, we reached out to one of the major wild-bird seed producers and they said “do not eat these”. The main reason was because they have no restrictions on the chemicals the growers use for wild-feed. So the growers can spray whatever they want on it, even if it’s not good to be eaten... I would avoid wild-bird seed. It’s not worth your health to consume huge quantities of unsafe seed.

New to the channel! I have a pound of sunflower seeds coming in the mail and this will be my first time growing micro-greens. Is 15 pounds of weight necessary that seems like a lot? I will be doing a smaller batch, not a 10x20 tray. I have not decided on medium yet, I was thinking using seed starting mix. Have you used that before and would you say it is ok to use? I will document my process as well so I can see where things go wrong if they do. I am not expecting it but you never know. Thank you for the tips and tricks.

Hello Jeff!! 15lbs of weight will make a big difference in your germination with sunflower microgreens. I know it seem's like a lot, but you'd be surprised. It also helps get those seed hulls off. If your doing a smaller tray you can always use something similar in weight.... Yes! Seed starting mixes are the way to go for microgreens. Though every brand of seed starting mix is going to give you different results, some are better than other brands. A good one is Roots Organics "Microgreens" Mix 🥳 Hope everything grows amazing for you!!

I thought I'd save money by buying 35% H2O2 and diluting it down to 3% with the proper amount of water. However, H202 over 3% is unstable and easily loses its strength with every twist of the cap. That means you don't actually know what the percentage is each time you use it. If you're diluting it with water at the same ratio each time, you end up with something lower than 3%. Additionally, 35% H202 is dangerous, as you can easily get burned. I've stuck with the 3% H202 because you can let it sit even for a week or two and it's stable at 3%.

@@OnTheGrow Awesome, thank you! I actually have most of that on hand. I was able to source a bottle, but I will use that as plan B if I need something in addition to H2O2. Also, for anyone interested, here's a little more info I found on hydrogen peroxide. Some but not all first aid hydrogen peroxide contains stabilizers that you don't want on your food. It should say on the back if it is stabilized, but you should also often call the manufacturer to confirm. By calling the number on the back, I was able to find out that mine is safe for food contact even though it's not labeled as such.

After you harvest the sprouts what do you do with the left overs? Bin it all or harvest a second growth? I know that the second growth may not taste as good but it could be give to livestock chickens or goats etc it doesn't taste good as that's the plant trying to defend itself.. you would have a lot of coconut medium.. have you tried aeroponics? no coconut medium also would be interest in your water and electricity bills etc? Also your lighting are they normal bulbs or UV as the white light will work not best for plant growth its more UV centric.... Need to get a shed for myself

125 grams for this video, we will usually seed between 100g-200g depending on the sunflower batch. If you let the two real leaves or "True leafs" come out, they get bitter. We taste ours daily to see when we want to harvest and generally it is when the true leafs are just starting to grow.

In regard to the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, do you know if it degrades when left in light. I know most HP is in a brown or solid colored container to stop degradation from light. Do you simply mix with the 2 tablespoons of water and leave in spray bottle for later use or do you have to make a new mix for every use? By the way you guys are just fantastic in explaining everything and so grateful for you to share your knowledge. Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@OnTheGrow

Usually will keep ours in a black spray bottle to keep it form degrading. A good suggestion is using Black Plasti Dip to blackout the outside of a spray bottle! We just mix ours and use it until its out, then we make more. We really appreciate the kind words and for you supporting us! 🥳

why u throw away seed that already germinated and stuck on the tray ?is there any reason?can you just put it back?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
We prefer to get rid of seeds that are stuck because they might get pulled into the canopy and decay. Generally, if it hasn't germinated well with everything else by day 2-3, we will toss them out. You can put it back, but it will likely not grow well and end up small with the seed hull stuck on its cotyledon. We usually only lose about 5-15 seeds to this out of the few hundred we used, so it is pretty normal. Most crops get about a 95% germination rate at best, so that falls within that loss rating.

Great video! So if I understood correctly, you pH balanced the water you used for soaking, but then just misted with tap water. I take it you have found it's not so important to water with that all the way through? And how about once you started bottom watering - do you pH balance that? And on day 8, all of the hulls were mysteriously gone - many must have come off in your evening brushing - is that typical?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
We’ve simplified it a bit, we no longer pH soak, it was only that batch of seed that needed it. When we bottom water with nutrients, it is always pH balanced to 5.8. It depends on the seed batch for ease of hull removal. Some batches are super easy like this one, others take a lot more work. It’s best to get them off during germination and brush daily to knock off.

Once again you have provided a very informative and entertaining video. ICan you explain why you use Ph water only in the soak process? You mention filtered water in the anti-fungal spray mix. Is this just normal tap water with a higher Ph? Also, is there a difference between the normal 3% hydrogen peroxide and the food grade?

Thank you so much for your support! We no longer pH balance our soaks. We are going to make an updated video on how to grow sunflower microgreens!
