I'm growing Okra in MN for the first time. The leaves are HUGE so they have taken up a good portion of my raised bed. They are only about 2 feet high right now. I'm growing them in compost and they are doing just fine. I planted them in May so it was still a bit cool, but I ended up putting bottles over them so they could retain some heat and they loved it. Love the flowers! Glad my husband wanted to plant some so badly!

I'm in the same area of Michigan as Luke and started my okra earlier in the season. Plants are about 4 ft. tall now and I've been harvesting for a few weeks. My plants are in a hydroponic system so they get constant water but not totally wet. It's true that there aren't many leaves but the leaves are large and make it hard to see new pods so as the okra is harvested I have started cutting the leaf off that's associated with that pod. Really cleans up the plant. Hope it doesn't have a negative effect on them later. Each plant has multiple trunks.

We have about 42 okra plants coming along nicely . Planted in east Texas sand with a bit of compost and manure and a little 10-10-10 at planting. The plot is 40'x15'.I spaced them 3 to4 feet apart so they grow real tall and I can walk amongst them like a okra forest! We also are harvesting some sunflower seeds that we bought from you.God bless you and yours Luke. Thanks for the tips.

I'm about to grow okra for the first time, also here in Texas. Although I'm not a huge okra fan, my adult daughter & mother are and I find the plants to be so pretty. I'm trying to decide on how many to plant. 42 plants sounds like a ton of okra. I was thinking more like 24 spaced a foot apart. Does that sound like it would be enough for a family of 6-8? or too few or too many plants?

It's interesting how full sun in one region differs from full sun in another. The angle of the sunlight (which affects the intensity of certain sunlight wavelengths on the plant) and the intensity of heat (that incubates the plant throughout growth), influences watering. If you all see how spindly the okra plants are, you can recognize the need of more regular and deep watering due to the angle of sunlight he's getting in his region. Be mindful everyone that your okra plants shouldn't look spindly, especially that young. Start them strong with considerable watering in direct sunlight or try partial shade. Good job!

I took a 2" strip of newspaper, rolled it up and curled it around each stem. I had no more cut down after that, although it's a lot of trouble to go through. I planted my okra in pure oak leaf compost mixed with wood ashes in a raised bed. They grew ten feet tall and had more okra pods than we could use.

I grew okra for the first time this year. I just want to add in that the pods grow incredibly fast. I have seen 1 inch pods end up being over 4 inches by the end of the day. Don't grow Okra unless you can go out twice a day and cut down the pods as soon as they get to perfect size. A few times I have forgotten to go back out at night to cut some okra down. The next day they were over 7 inches in the morning and just went into the compost. Their flowers are beautiful though if you can manage to be put at the right time to see them. They open up and get fertilized soo quickly that it's very easily to miss the blooms all together if you can't go visit your garden during the day.

River P Yes it’s easy. I planted a bunch and most have made it through. He says that they need all that sun, but where I live it’s over 100F nowadays, so I keep them mostly in the shade. For watering, I stick my finger in the soil and if it’s dry, then I water. If they’re out in the sun too much, combined with all the heat, they wilt fast.

@@CatsOrangeAndGreyHmmmm they sound a bit sensitive, sensitive to heat and rain and sun. Half my garden collapses after a long week or two deluge of rain when the sun comes out again at 34%C. It takes a few days for everything to remember the sun. Do they bounce back from a wilt? I'm so excited because I got the red one as well as the green one, I thought the red quite ornamental. Just this tropics is tricky. Thanks Jessica I guess if i can grow papayas okra should survive......same sort of soft herbaceous sub-shruby type thing, I reckon at least. I think i will try your trick and go for half shade, maybe morning sun only. 34%C is about 90F so cooler than you but our humidity is up there at around 80-90%. Wonder if the dry season (winter) would be better.......problem is I don't have any farmers around here to copy, it's just jungle forest. There was an old guy but he slipt up at the waterfall and died when he fell over the edge while fixing his water pipes. So sad his patch in the bush was immaculate, he grew so many things, things I've never even tasted. Many different creepers and gourds sadly I just wasn't into growing veg then..........I guess trial and error it must be.
