Wow! some great tips that I want to implement. Thanks for all of the great points. My favorite expression, however, is when you said "they JUST grow". Great tips for growing Discus, I will recommend this video on my channel.

How do you get your discus use to the bell? Is there a method to training them with the bell? I have wild 2.5 that are skittish with just the light, they are slowly getting use to the light now after a week but the bell just kinda scares them.
@shelleraquatics
@shelleraquatics Ай бұрын
Every fish in my fish room uses the bell, Discus, Angels, Rainbowfish. Guppies, cory cats. Even all my plecos suck on the bell! I have sold over 200 of them and you are the first person that has had this issue. I think just keep introducing it, if it doesn't work I will refund your money.👍 Try sticking a blackworm cube against the glass, if they don't attack it you may have a problem with something internally. If they attach the blackworm on the glass then stuff it in the bell, they will be looking for the bell all the time.

@ awesome thanks for the feedback back, I’ll keep at it and keep trying, they are just so skittish, they freak themselves out. I got couple of Heckel cross, red alenquers, wild blue rim mix. All 2.5 -14 in a 40 grow out. I’ll dose some meds rn and see where this goes. I’ll keep you posted because it is interesting if they don’t touch due to maybe a parasite or bacterial sickness. First day they had a swim bladder issue, second week with them. Finally use to light and daily water changes. Just won’t eat. They pick at algae and food but spit it out.

@sunbear76re - I highly recommend erythromycin/salt for 3-4 days first, with the information you provided it would be my go to.. If you have access depending on where you are in the world

Man, it's easier to just get a powerhead, if you will change water on a bare bottom tank.
@shelleraquatics
@shelleraquatics 9 ай бұрын
@@Alex_Correa actually for growing discus out correctly a powerhead would cause all kind of issues with growth. You don't want current in a discus grow out tank, you will end up stunting them because of the energy they would be wasting. Instead of making 3-5000.00 you would waste your time and have to cull a 100 fish and that is never fun. In 35 years I've tried everything you can imagine to make the process easier but that is probably why they are expensive fish. Steve Heller

@@shelleraquatics Hi, Steve. They do have what they call "nano pumps" or "pico pumps" and those will give you the right amount of push for each application. You will need only to direct the flow to the water surface and hit the wall to brake the push and the whole tank won't have current, when full, so it won't generate too much of a current throughout the body of water.

I was under the impression that fish need more space to grow more to a bigger size. Also, the higher the temperature, the faster their metabolism, faster growth. Everyone says one thing. There is not one way, I guess. The pump on the top could be just a small powerhead to agitate the surface.I also heard they need higher temperature like 82-86 no matter what, so... About the stunted fish... some say it's because of hormones released by adult or bigger fish in the same system. Others say it's because those fish can't get enough food because other fishes are eating more. How many times a day do you feed them?
@shelleraquatics
@shelleraquatics 9 ай бұрын
Hormone theory has never been an issue for me personally. The bigger fish are more dominant. Fish can't grow without food. Discus are different from any other fish as far as growing. I bred hundreds of species, Discus must have a higher metabolism because they are a compressed fish and are highly susceptible to bloat. They also have long digestive tracts because of the body compression. I have tried big tanks, cooler water, different foods which leads to slow growth and even stunting. I feed between 3-5 times a day. I'm just telling everyone one what works for me after breeding literally 10's of thousands of fish. For no reason except to help and serve

@@shelleraquatics By the way, "hormone theory" as you say, could be addressed as a "theory" for aquarium kept fish, but you will find scientific papers with proved experiments of stunted salmons.

Love the vid. I have a question. I just received 9 discus. And the blue diamonds are stressing and had clamped fins. I went to the lfs today and they told me to treat with para cleanse. There still gasping a bit but I dosed 2 packets to a 40 breeder. Any thoughts
@shelleraquatics
@shelleraquatics 9 ай бұрын
Para cleanse is Metronidazole and praziquantinal. Mostly for internal parasitic issues. Metro does have some antibiotic benefits but not its main function. Blue diamond are prone to bloat. Keep an eye on them. If no improvement this what I would do but without seeing them please be cautious not to over medicate. Erythromycin is a broad spectrum antibiotic treating gram negative and gram positive bacteria. I believe fritz is called maracyn? I would try a little salt, aquarium or sea salt. 1 tablespoon per 10 gallon up to 1 tablespoon per 3 gallon for extreme cases. 1-10 will be safe with the dosage of para cleanse you have used. The salt will relax the fish and help the clamping. Do not run salt for more than 3 days though because of dehydration. Let me know how it goes. My email is shelleraquatics@gmail.com Steve Heller

Steve hope you got my pic of my fish. But I heard you say the fish measure 4” from head to end of tail. Last night I was measuring a couple of them and people were saying head to base of tail. What’s most common in the us. I bought my last batch from Wattley and I think they measure your way as well. Thanks
@shelleraquatics
@shelleraquatics 7 ай бұрын
Big debate on the issue. Base of the tail is standard length. End of the tail is total length. 95% use total length but the Discus world is controversial. I use total length in all fish myself
