I started these pear trees from store bought seed (D'Anjou Pears) on 7/10/16. They are now 24 months old.
In this video, I'll catch you up on the 3 young trees and also show you my other pear varieties, Bartlett and Orient - which are 3+ year old trees.
I'm hoping these little pear trees can handle the Texas sun (and 100 degree temps almost every day!) and new soil conditions now that they have gone through the initial shock since transplanting them outside a year ago, weathering their first "winter," fighting fire blight, and acclimating to the Texas Clay.
I'm also optimistic that they'll really take off now that they will get the nutrients from the soil and the sun since they seem to finally set down healthy roots!
It's been a fight getting them acclimated after spending almost 8 months indoors. I am currently giving them a half dose of tree and shrub fertilizer (14-14-14) and doing my best to keep them well watered and free of pests, like aphids and white flies, as well as keeping my eyes on their leaves for any more sight of the dreaded fire blight!
I plan on being more diligent in keeping this series updates throughout the year, so stay tuned and join me as we see them go from seed to fruit bearing trees - I hope!
Here is the entire series from episode 1:

Growing big trees near building? Wont the roots cause damage to the structure? I planted mine 10 feet away and still worried.

Mine two saplings are two years old and are about three inches tall. I thought I was going to lose them but they they survived the hot summer temps, so at least there's that..

I just stumbled onto this video. I'm in SE Georgia and grow 15 varieties of southern pear. My first question is where are you located? You mentioned the heat several time. If you are in a hot climate that's far enough south where you don't get 8 or 9 hundred hours of temps in winter between 32F and 58 F, Bartlett Pear and Angeu are never going to bloom well enough to produce much of a crop even if they survive the fire blight. There are some very good fire blight resistant pear varieties that are very suitable for warm climates. For the SE USA the very low chill and fire blight resistant variety known as Goldenboy comes the closest to mimicking Bartlett pear. Its a big sweet soft pear that even looks like a Bartlett pear except the fruit are a little bigger and have a little thicker neck. I suspect that if they were grown side by side, Goldenboy would produce a few weeks earlier in the season. Anyway, It's hard for me to comment more without knowing where you are located and what your winters are like. But seeing all that fire blight on those fire blight prone varieties implies to me that you need to start over with fire blight resistant southern varieties. I'm a little surprised that you Orient pear isn't doing better. That one is usually bullet proof. The leaves don't look right to me for Orient pear. Where did you get it from? My suspicion is that you have a mislabeled trees. Orient has huge thick leaves reflecting the Asian pear in it's pedigree. Those leaves just don't look right for Orient. Thanks.

Rob you ROCK!!!!! Nice trees!!!!! I am blown away at how many plants and trees you have grown from seeds!!!!! We have two pears as well! Is having grass next to the tree bad? I keep it around mine because it's SO hot here the tall grass shades the base of the tree. Side note... I HATE affids too! They are the bane of my existence! I had tons on my tomato and squash plants a few years ago!

AZ Garden Girl Thanks!! Yeah, it’s best to keep at least a few feet around the base free of grass but I like a little around mine. It’s hot here too! My garden is struggling to fruit this year since the flowers dry up before they set. Looking forward to your next vid!

Have you tried wrapping you trees with tree wrap then flagging tape and then using tanglefoot to keep the ants from crawling onto your fruit trees... the tanglefoot traps the ants and keeps the aphids off your trees
