How To Grow Pear Trees From Seed, Day 82

Time for an update on my Pear trees from seeds series... it's been 48 days since the last video and they are now at 82 days old!
Looks like the 1st sprouts in old soil are struggling compared to the 2nd three sprouts in newer soil... lesson learned: always put young sprouts in new, high quality potting mix... duh!

Tbh I had some seeds like this with my avocado and they seem to respond better when I plant them during a full moon call me crazy but it does help a lot with my germination rate .

I have a pear grown from seed that was stunted and looked like it was about to die. I set the container next to an azalea by chance and came back a few days later. The pear tree completely came to life and took off. I planted it next to the azalea and it branched out and thickened up like crazy. I started the seed in December of 2020 and now it's over four foot tall with about an inch trunk. Could there be something to the azalea being close to the pear?

Hello, i started my pear seeds with roots indoors about 2 weeks ago in egg cartons. They all took off nicely and grow bigger and bigger day by day. How long should I wait before I transplant seedlings into a bigger pot or a plastic cup like in your video?

Piano Original great job on the pear seeds! As soon as they get their 2nd set of leaves (or first true leaves) then I’d transplant them.

Only when I transplant it into a bigger pot, or if I suspect some kind of pest infections/fungal infection.

For people planting pears , you will need at least 2 varieties of pears to get any fruits and you will not get the same type of pear as what you get the seed from.

question is.. do trees grown from seed produce fruit? Don't most fruit trees require cross pollination and therefore people usually use grafted stock?

Jackal's Outdoor Channel Pear trees grown from seed can produce edible fruit. While the variety may be different from the parent tree, it is possible. Having other pear tree varieties for cross pollination is suggested so that you get a quality harvest, and since I have Orient and Bartlett pear trees in my yard to go with theses d'anjou ones, I shouldn't have to worry too much about that. Keep in mind that it takes roughly 5-8 years to produce fruit, but some can produce in as little as 3 years. At the end of the day, I'm mostly growing these for fun but would love to discover a new variety!

Is it possible to get a pear tree if I plant the seed in soil? A plumule came out which looks white but not sure if it's a pear plant

Yes. If it is a pear seed from a pear tree you should get a pear tree - it may be a different variety than what you pulled it from, but it should be a pear variety. Thanks.

For indoors, I recommend purchasing a quality potting mix. If you have homemade compost, then you could buy cheap potting mix and amend it with some compost. Thanks for tuning in!
