Here's a quick video on how I take some store bought pears and grow their seeds into trees... I started the seeds on 7/10 and this video takes you through their first 34 days of progress.
Watch the whole series in my playlists!
The pear variety I am growing for this series is D'Anjou and I'm hopeful that it'll cross pollinate with my Orient Pear and my Bartlett Pear Trees outside.
Thanks for watching!

i know people read comments for more info, so here is my story. My friend loved the pears from his grandfather’s tree. His mother got a tree from it-i don’t know if it was from a seed or a cutting, but everyone agreed the mother’s pears were excellent. His brother brought some cuttings and pears from that tree (the mother had died and the house sold, but the new neighbor’s were friendly and shared). i have not rooted any cuttings yet, but they leafed out and I am not sure they are dead. I put a few seeds, fresh from the pear , in moist potting soil in a ziplock bag that was mostly closed. and put it in a back corner of my friend’s top refrigerator shelf. That was Sept.14. A few weeks ago--maybe several weeks ago? --way sooner than I expected, they sprouted IN the refrigerator!!! I was not sure what to do, but they started getting leggy, so i put them under the grow light (LED shop light) in the basement. I might have planted more than 3 seeds---i am sure not more than 5, and I planted some the same day in a pot on my friend’s deck. squirrels dug up the dirt in the pot several times, burying nuts, I guess, and I gave up on those. If i plant any outside again, i will put them in a cage. By Feb. 14, The seedlings are about 4 inches tall and have 2 sets of true leaves, working on 3rd!

@@serrosii no, the paper towel isn't necessary. Idk why they tell to overcomplicate. I just put the seeds in glass with little water. I kept this glass with water and seeds in normal temperature ,in room. After 2 weeks the seeds sprouted. I think they should be planted when the sprouting root gets out, before the rest gets out. I then removed it gently from the glass and planted in pots, 2-3 mm under the top of soil.

I could not get my apple seeds to sprout. After watching this I realized I probably shouldn't have kept them in the refrigerator. They were apples that I had picked off someone's tree. Then I was eating an apple from the store, and noticed that the seeds started sprouted inside the apple. I decided to plant them along with the unsprouted seeds from the other apples. I looked at them today, and noticed that all of them, are starting to grow. I really did not think the other ones would grow. I'm thinking I am going to have to figure out a way to separate them as they grow a little more. It appears that all of them are growing, which are several. I was so excited to see them. I thought to myself, I wonder if I could get the seeds from the pear I have, to grow like these apples. I came across this video, I will make sure this time I do not put them in the fridge. Anyway, I must say, if the seeds I put in soil, which were not sprouted ended up sprouting, it is quite possible anything will germinate in the dirt.

here in South Africa we don't have the greatest variety of pears, but I've found i have a soft spot for a nice soft, ripe Packham pear. Sadly what we get in the shop is nowhere near ripe, and they dont really ripen any further at home. I will be doing this with every qualifying seed i come across 😈

Fyi D'Anjou are already cold treated seeds since the fruits require a cold ripening period after they are harvested. I'm not sure how it applies to every pear type but some are going to sprout better after cold treatment

@coolmantoole

Cool video. This is a good way to get good rootstock for what will be large grafted trees provided you live in an area with a cool climate where fireblight isn't too bad. There is no reason to think think that the seeds from a commercial pear at a supermarket will have the genetics to be fireblight resistant enough to survive in the SE USA. The seedlings of pear won't be anywhere near true to the parent variety and will most likely be greatly inferior to it in terms of fruit quality. But that's not an issue if you want free rootstock. I plan to do exactly this with some of the seeds I get from the pears I grow for the sake of getting rootstock. I will graft my hard to find southern cultivars onto the seedlings for the purpose of selling. I live in the Deep South and have to grow varieties that are way more fireblight resistant and have a lower chilling requirement than that of Angue or Bartlett for that matter. The seedlings from the varieties I have in my orchard should inherit the FB resistance from their parents, and chilling won't matter since they will be used for rootstock for my cultivars. Note, Angue is a deep storage pear which means those pears were likely in refrigeration for months. That's why the seeds were stratified and ready to germinate. Seeds from a pear right off a tree will need to go into refrigeration for a couple of months before they are ready to germinate. Last note; most commercial rootstocks are selected to have a dwarfing effect on the fruit tree. A European pear grafted onto a European seedling or that is rooted on its own root will make a much larger tree ultimately than most pear trees bought from a nursery. We are talking a 40 foot tree as opposed to a 20 foot or in the case of quince rootstock a ten foot tree.
@lydiahubbell6278
@lydiahubbell6278 Жыл бұрын
that is what i figured about skipping the cold stratification step--the whole pear must have got chilled properly.

@coolmantoole
@coolmantoole 3 ай бұрын
@@TheRainHarvester citrus are generally true to parent because they are a result of an asexual process to complex to explain in a comment. But generally, with fruit trees, it much better to propagate them sexually. It takes too long for them to mature to bother with seedlings on unknown fruit quality. Vegetables are true to type because they are inbred in ways that fruit trees are not.

It had recently sprouted a new leaf and that leaf is. also turning brown but is also not very green. Oddly, the leaf seems to be growing. The plant is underneath an artificial. light indoors in a room-temp environment and is in a plastic cup that isn't that deep. Thomas Gruver I started my Pear Trees in July last year so I didn't put them outside. I started my apple trees on 1/1 last year and did plant them outside after 7 months since it was still mid summer. I think that starting them now will afford you either choice. The key is to have the young Tree about 1/2" or more in diameter by the time winter hits so that it can withstand the winter. Of course, I took extra precaution and wrapped them just to ensure their survival... good luck!

fadeddenims501 most pears are cold hardy and need/want chill hours logged over the winter. If the plants are at least 6 months old then I believe you can safely plant them or keep them outdoors over the winter. Check the cold hardiness of your specific variety to be sure it can tolerate your zones winter temps.

melchor montero I didn't. I kept it indoors for a bit longer so it didn't go through transplant shock and sun shock. However, you should harden it off gradually. An hour or so per day for a few days then increase over a few weeks. Hope this helps and good luck!

Monsanto should be dismantled. Buy organic and grow your own food.

Good video. Were the bought pears grown local to you? How soon into or after pear season did you propogate the pear seeds?
@RobBackyardGardenerr
@RobBackyardGardenerr 6 жыл бұрын
I left them in the fridge for 2 months and then started them - mid year... Later than planned but I knew they'd be grown indoors for the better part of at least 6 months too.

I tried to doing this with 5 different varieties of pears, after being in the cool store for 7-9 months. And then being left out for a week. That was almost 2 months ago. Only the Beur Bosc have sprouted, and only 3 of the 6.

Scott Watson Yeah, pear seeds can be a bit tricky. I've had decent results with both stratifying them by leaving the whole fruit in the fridge for awhile versus removing the seeds and then keeping them in a moist paper towel in the fridge. Typically, I get about 33-50% germination ratio. I hope your pear seedling make it and good luck!

Thank you but I was told that pear seeds need to be stratified (hibernate a few months in the cold or refrigerator) ... to be able to grow ... I think the fruits you have bought have already been stratified .. otherwise we can say that it is impossible .. my info are they correct ? .. correct me if I'm wrong please

iMed iMed Hello - yes, you are correct. The pears were left in the fridge for months longer than normal. I did point that out in the beginning of the video - so yes, they were stratified. Thanks for watching and Happy Gardening!
