How to Propagate Carnations from Cuttings. Carnations are very easy to grow from cuttings taken from spring through to summer.
All Carnations are Dianthus species and cultivars so this technique applies to Dianthus, Sweet Williams and what are commonly called 'Pinks'.
Steps to growing Carnations from Cuttings.
1. You need to look for tip cuttings that have no flowers buds.
2. Cuttings need to have at least 3 - 4 nodes.
3. Take the cutting just below a leaf node.
4. Use a free draining potting mix.
5. You can use a rooting hormone if desired.
6. Keep the cuttings warm and moist - not wet and soggy.
7. New growth should appear in around 4 - 6 weeks.

Thanks for the video. One more good thing to do is always water your plant the day before you take cuttings.

I have a dwarf carnation in a concrete tub and they are looking quite old and straggly. Can I still use your method even if the cuttings are only about 2-3 inches long ?

If the foliage looks healthy the flowers should appear in a month or two. Make sure you DO NOT use too much fertiliser that is high in nitrogen.

Yes the taller ones do need staking if you want those long straight stems.

Hi john, dont know if you're still active. I did everything you did with one cutting. I put it in a pot similarly sized as yours. They were no major issues but the plant didn't show any signs of growth and two leaves browned and i cut them. What have i done wrong? Someone told me I shouldn't have used such a big pot

What season didi you take the cuttings ,( best in summer) Did you take the cuttings at a node or with a heal? Did you cover the cuttings with something similar to what we used, Did you mist spray and keep moist soil. Did you keep them out of hot sun?
@steliosemmanouilidis5050
@steliosemmanouilidis5050 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyAGardening Ok, here's what I did wrong. I understood from your video that i just have to mist it and not water it to keep the soil moist. I also dont know what a node or a heal is. I did this 4 weeks ago exactly. If i had done it right i would remove it now
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 2 жыл бұрын
@@steliosemmanouilidis5050 The node is like a small bump or join in the stem, a heal is a little piece is tissue fro m one stem where it joins another stem. Cuttings usually root from nodes or heals. I will do a video on this showing it more clearly ASAP.

@@johnnyAGardening I put the cutting in a way thinner container. Im misting it and watering the soil everyday. The cutting is browning. Ill try and get more cuttings. I also hear that with carnations 50% of cuttings are not successful so maybe that's also why.

Firstly thank you for the knowledge this is great to know...What I have noticed is your cuttings seem to have roots but could I do the same with stems?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Natalie. They are actually stem cuttings, the lower part has older foliage that may look a little like roots. So yes you can do that with stems, as long as you are not referring to the flower stems. I hope this is clear if not ask again.

Hello, I have a carnation cutting that has rooted nicely, but the new growth seems odd. Its just one long, lanky stem with leaves on it. Do you have any suggestions on how to get this to a more bushy plant?

Hello Liam, without seeing it, Prune or 'Pinch' it back to just above a set of leaves, it should branch out.
