After you cut the roots off the first time and let them dry for days, how long after planting did you wait to give water? I have 6 or 7 that i cut, dried, and planted but havent given water, no roots yet.
@GardenSvideos Жыл бұрын
Hello Danny O'Dell, well it depends on how large are the cuts and how heavy is the plant. lighter plants with thinner cuts I was watering even right away, but the larger the cuts the longer I waitheld the watering. Even more so if the plant was also heavy - because the pressure of the plant on the cuts. Also with bigger cuts I sometimes didn't plant the Adenium right away into regular growing medium but into steril - pure perlite from which I sifted away the dust. In the video posted last week (on clickable url: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2jcmoiaeauFrZI ) I'm showing new roots on cuts - these particular cuts were done with cinnamon dusting over fresh cut and then drying - because somebody on the Internet recommended such powder so I tried it.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I’m just spraying the bottom of the caudex. It’s Summer here and humid, hot, sunny, overcast, raining. All over the place to be honest. It has taken over a month. I lifted it to check the roots and finally, small white roots are growing around the caudex. I also cut the top of the caudex and no branches growing yet. So much waiting but will keep you updated. I only did it to try to make arial roots. No rot was present.

@GardenSvideos2 жыл бұрын
Hello Jason De Gama, - there is a specie of Adenium called Adenium Swazicum which is capable of growing new plants from (not too thin) root cuttings. Because I don't have this specie (Adenium Swazicum) I don't know how easy it is and if some plants or this specie can do it easier than other. On another - but related subject - there are hundreds of specie of genus Ficus. Some are vines and most are trees. One can do it with many (or all?) vines and from trees of genus Ficus I know 2 for sure - it is possible with Ficus religiosa and Ficus nerifolia. All other I tried were not capable. (I tried with about 15 other)

How did the plant get moisture and nutrients from you just using perlite? How often did you spray water on top of perlite one?
@GardenSvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kim Latimer, about nutrients - for few month there were no nutrients in perlite - the plant had nutrients only from storage from inside of its body - that slows the growth - unfortunately - but also help plant not to start to rot. About water: It is important that the container has good drainage holes and perlite be sifted from dust - so that the moisture can not stay - again that is because of rot danger. As for watering - it depends on temperature and wind to see when I should water again - one can stick finger into that clean perlite to see if it's clause to dry (but not dry yet - to water again. But when I plant seeds, I don't want even surface to be dry so I each day blow on the surface with mouth and if particles move I water. If somebody would see me in the morning blowing then that person would think that I look funny :-)
@kimlatimer73293 жыл бұрын
So I need to rinse the bag of perlite in a screened bowl to remove all dust and that will wet the perlite enough to place my desert rose in it. Leave it alone in shaded area for 4 months? Spray it when it starts to feel dry.
@GardenSvideos3 жыл бұрын
@@kimlatimer7329 yes You can rinse it - or just sift it - but watch which direction the air is moving so You won't breath the dust - and it does not need to be in shade 4 month - once it starts to grow vigorously I'm putting it on sunshine - in about 2 month - unless it is a rainy season. cheers

I’m trying desperately to save my 5yr old adenium. I cut it clear across like you did, but I had to dig out the root rot higher up in the plant so there is a big space up there. I coated all the cut areas real good with cinnamon. It’s been drying out for almost a week.
@GardenSvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kim Latimer. I dried these plants away from sun but in place where there is a breeze - for drying and ventilation. As for parts catching rot during drying - when that happened to me with plants that had about less than 5 inch across cut then just like You I cut the infected area and kept drying it, but on very big cut that I did recently (about 1/2 a year ago - plant that was growing almost 8 years in the ground - I just let it be and it healed under the rot and the rot dried and I peeled it. But because I didn't tried this to deal with the problem on smaller plants I can't say from experience if it'll work so I'm happy that You recut it. Another 'trick' that I tried and it did work for me was that I dried that re-cut place with electric hair dryer for an hour or so (but set up NOT on hot) and then dried the whole plant for a week or so - this way the re-cut part was not less dry then the rest. I hope this writing will help. Oh and also - it helped in my case to turn the plant every 2 days or so - to prevent from being moist on the bottom - or hand it - all that to help air circulation. OK - now I ran out of advices already. Hope this will heplp.

Hello patrickeman, that is an interesting idea. My DH Adenium are so very dwarf and growing so very slowly that I would be afraid that they'll either won't survive it or will but I won't live sufficiently long to see it with nice roots :-) I'm 73. smiling face, smiling face, smiling face. But seriously - one way that might be practical and now that You inspired me i might try it - is first graft them on obesum - which makes them grow and thicken way faster - I did that few times - and they loose all their curliness, and then do the surgery so they would be again on their own roots and regain curliness.. Looks like You are good on original thinking.

Dry the cut a little and only then planted the plant into bonsai pot. It worked. I live in Hawaii and in January - February we get more rains than rest of the year. Usually. Where do You live?

If you plant the roots that you cut out,would they grow adenium as in if you planted seeds?
@GardenSvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hello Al Almaoui. I know it is possible with some perenials. For example from ficuses it is possible with Ficus religiosa and Ficus nerifolia, and Ficus diversifolia but not possible with (in flower stores) more common ficuses such as Ficus retusa and Ficus benjamina. With Adeniums of the types that I have it was not possible. I read that it is possible with specie Adenium swazicum, but I don't have this specie so I don't know if it's really true. But it is possible to use cut root as a rootstock - graft into it. But when I tried it most of the times didn't work so I stopped this practice.

Hello jan ihe, well, what can I say? She met me 57 years ago when I was 15 and she 20 on concert of John Sebastian Bach 'art of the fugue' and relieved that she is interest in me once I turned 12. She studied art (monumental painting) and art restoration on university and restored mostly frescoes on European castles and Altar paintings in Hawaiian churches. She passed away after several years of pain from number of illnesses at age 77. I miss her very much and talk to her (in my head) all day long on and off but she cannot reply. I'm not use to be a widower so I'm very depressed when I'm not busy but not while I'm doing something because at that time I'm concentrating on the activity at hand like for example on writing to You this. I'm trying to keep this channel focused on it's subject which is garden and gardens so in line of that I can say that she also did some scientific botanical illustrations of newly discovered Hawaiian native plants. I was helping her with that and it was very interesting but at the slow speed we were doing it it did not pay the rent. We did 2 such illustrations and had to stop because of decline of her health.

Are the ants living in the pot? How do you deal with pests ? Usually when I have ants I have aphids. Thank you for your wonderful advice 😊
@GardenSvideos4 жыл бұрын
Hello hippymaster. I have 3 types of pests: One is caterpillar of a moth call Oleander Hawk moth. This caterpillar eats leaf of Adenium. I'm trying to find those caterpillar and give them to the wild chickens we have here. Another is miniature sucking insect call Red Spidermite. It lives on the underside of Adenium leaves and it can be easily seen with magnifier. This pest loves microscopes 'hair' on those leaves. Most of Adenium arabicum have such hair. That's why I plant way more seeds of A. arabickum than I need and thin them. Other varieties of Adenium have them rarely. Again, I thin the once that have this tiny 'hair'. Bigger problem is when nice old Adenium reverts to this type - starts to grow such leaves. This happened several times to me with grafted Adenium cultivar broccoli. After a year or so from such an attack they passed away. Currently I have 1 such individual. Third pest I have in some pots is ants and this problem I just ignore, because my potted plants are not indoors so it does not bother me and it does not seem to bother the plants. These are the only pests I know of on my plants other than fruit trees.
