I always start from seed, but I do start them indoors first, then acclimate then to the outdoors over time before I transplant them outside. This gives me a bit of a headstart with some plants, and I'm trying this with spinach this year.

I love starting my garden plants from seeds, the difference in overall cost is mind blowing and with the variety I like to plant, starts would bankrupt me! Granted, I grow mostly peppers but still ... My question, they can handle cooler nights but what about a day or two of late spring snow? Seems that's an issue here. Thanks for the tips!

I can't afford trifecta right now so I planted a couple of 12 inch pots of spinach with compost, perlite, vermiculite and potting soil. Will this do, and can I add trifecta later to fertilize in a situation where I have to plant fast but can't get all the stuff right away?

I have a hosta bed that I'd like to turn into a spinach bed. It faces east, and only gets direct sun for a couple of hours in the morning. Would spinach be able to grow in a bed that is bright all day but no direct sun after noon? It is on a slight slope, and drainage is good. Do I need to cover it with wire or anything to keep critters out? I'm in W. TN, zone 7b/8. Our summers are brutal. Thanks!

Do you leave all 50 plants in the square foot or do you thin them out little and do you plant more than one pepper plant per square foot keep saying people say one pepper plant per foot but but I've grown to pepper plants right next two each other from a container and they grew perfectly fine just as big as the other ones that were separate so I was wondering if that really mattered

So when you sow your seeds like that, do you end up thinning them out?
@danmc76922 жыл бұрын
I just watched another video of yours from 2019 in which you were planting seedlings and saying why you shouldn't direct sew spinach and other cold hardy plants because of the short growing season and bolting. I'm not sure if I'm dealing with a contradiction or if your opinion changes over time, or what. The reason I'm watching these videos is to figure out if my spinach is planted too close together, but based on this video I'm thinking not.
@cedarpentowski54524 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I was hoping to grow my own spinach this year but if it’s best grown in the spring, I might have to wait until next year to grow. Since my garden won’t be ready probably until june or some time next week. How best could I make sure I don’t have a lot of bugs attacking my spinach? Last time I tried growing, the poor spinach was being eaten by bugs
@ptmonagh4 жыл бұрын
You may not see this as vid is 4 yrs old. However, do mice eat spinach leaves? Had many seedlings at first 3-4 leaves, and then were gone and plants are green stems, but stripped. Should I care for them or start over? Is it too late in high desert at mid May??? 51 d at nite, 83 d daytime temps???

Great concept! Would this also work for kale and other greens?
@blackmber2 жыл бұрын
In my experience kale plants get a lot bigger than spinach, so if you want it to grow to full maturity and harvest large leaves they will need a lot more space. If you plant them close like the spinach you can harvest the micro greens and perhaps thin them out as they grow. Most other greens grow to a more moderate size and it’s up to you whether to harvest the small leaves or give them space and time to bulk up.

Here in Southern Ohio I have tried to plant spinach several times and the problem I have is in early spring is slow to germinate and slow to grow. Perhaps I'm not feeding enough.

Luke, the issue we have with Spinach is that it will germinated really well, but after a week or so, they just die. Granted, I will say that when we tried it, we did not have fertilizer in the containers, but it was a soil that had organic matter in it. Any ideas?

fertilizer: dont buy any. make your own. You learn much better that way. Grass clippings from mowning the lawn for example. soak in a bucket of water for 3 days and turn it every day 2 times. then sieve out the wet grass. chuck the gras into your compost pile and keep the liqiuid for feeding. free fertilizer. the next time you go for a walk, grab a riucksack and fill it with tree sticks that have broken off over winter. burn them and spread the ashes over alkaline loving lettuce
