If you have powdery mildew you can spray with half milk and half water as a preventative. The down side of using neem oil is if there are ladybug eggs and larve you are killing them too. If your patient and you have aphids the ladybugs will come. Maybe that's why you have high aphid pressure. Thank you for the guidance on growing them in a small space . The grandkids really want some.

Mine sprouted in 3 days! I soaked them overnight, planted them in a large container pot, they sprouted so fast I couldn't believe it! They already have their first true leaves now. I did read that each vine will only produce about two watermelons. I'm wondering if you've grown them before, and find that to be true?

How are yours growing? I don’t know if it’s the lack of fertilizer in the ground or all the cold cloudy🌥️days we’ve been getting but mine are taking forever to grow. I love cattle panel, but it has nearly doubled in price in 3 years. So glad you said the price range of ladder mesh, because now I might have to get creative with ladder mesh. Kim, I'll be very interested to see how you cradle the melons when they start to get heavy. Also, it's good to know that the soil to grow these melons in doesn't have to be very deep. Love the idea of growing plants in the middle that need some shade. I'm thinking herbs, or maybe even a squash plant. (If that's a bad idea, please say so). Your terrace walls still look beautiful, and I love that you've left some space open. So much life and color going on; thank you both for sharing it with us! 🐶🐾🤗 Hi Mac!

What I do to support my sugar babies and winter squash is pieces of pantyhose tied to the trellis to form a sling for the fruit to lay in. Works great! I’m thinking of trying cheesecloth too because I have some and it’s cheaper!

Any other suggestions to make an arched trellis without ladder mesh? My husband and I cannot find it anywhere where we live. Kind of crazy. We were so excited because we started a garden across from our house in a lot we purchased. Lowe's & Home Depot do not have it around here and your can order from Home Depot for delivery but it will be $79 just for that. The closest HD store that does have it is over an hour away. Thank you for any input.

Thanks a lot for sharing . What is the distance between 2 sugar baby watermelon plants , if they grow vertically?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Ай бұрын
Sp ace each Sugar Baby watermelon plant about 12-18 inches apart. This distance ensures that the plants have enough room for their roots to expand and for good airflow between the plants, which helps prevent diseases. Space rows approximately 3-4 feet apart. This distance allows for easy access to the plants for maintenance, watering, and harvesting. Hope this helps! CK

Love your videos! Newbie question - if you have two watermelon plants growing in one cell. Do you transplant it as is and let two watermelon plants grow? Or are you supposed to only let one of the plants grow?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 ай бұрын
Hi Kara, good question. It's generally recommended to allow only one plant to grow in each location. Leaving two in can lead to overcrowding, competition for resources: sunlight, water, and nutrients. Generally what I do if there are 2 growing in one cell is let them grow, transplant into the garden and thin to the strongest seedling (trim the smaller one at the base) as they grow. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and commenting (subscribing?) ! CaliKim

I am growing sugar babies for the first time this year and am doing in a 3 foot raised bed as you have here. However, I am unable to figure out 1) does your 3-ft smart pot have 3 compartments, or do I need to cut the compartments out? and 2) it looks like you have some kind of black grate on top of your soil - do I need that, and what did you use? TYSM for your help. I am very excited to try this out!
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Ай бұрын
Hi Michelle - you'll LOVE growing your own sugar babies - they are so easy to grow a super sweet! Little Shorty is the handiest little raised bed! It have 3 dividers for stability. No need to cut them out - just plant something in each section - they don't get in the way at all. Make sure to check out our new watermelon video we just uploaded today for more tips! The black grate might be my drip irrigation - highly recommended and super helpful for consistent watering, but not absolutely necessary, as long as you can water by hand consistently. Keep me posted!

Hi! That’s great to hear your Sugar Baby melons are sprouting! For fertilizing, you can continue using the fish fertilizer now that they’ve sprouted. Typically, fertilize every 2-3 weeks. As they grow, you might also consider adding a balanced fertilizer to support their development. Keep it up! CaliKim

How do you support the watermelons if they are hanging. Will the weight make them fall?

So should the neem spray be sprayed as soon as I plant? I’m planting a sugar baby watermelon plant from Home Depot? All of my fruits and veggies are plants.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 2 ай бұрын
Applying neem spray to your newly transplanted Sugar Baby watermelon plants can be a proactive measure to protect them from pests and diseases. It's generally a good idea to wait a few days after transplanting before applying neem oil. This allows the plants to settle into their new environment and reduces the risk of additional stress. If you notice any pests or signs of disease during this period, you can apply neem oil sooner. I hope this helps ! Please thumbs up the video and subscribe if you have not already (I can't always tell who has subscribed)! Where are you and what are you growing? CaliKim

I have noticed that when you plant starters that they sometimes have two babies, do you at some point cut the weaker plant away or do you leave them both? ❤ your videos.
@CaliKim29

Hi Shirley, I happen to be on when your comment came in! Great question. You have 3 choices: Thinning: Thinning involves removing the weaker or less vigorous seedling, leaving behind the strongest one to grow. Transplanting: If you prefer not to discard any seedlings, you can carefully separate them and transplant each one into its own container or garden spot. Leaving Both: Keeping in mind that they will compete for space, nutrients, and sunlight, which can affect their growth and overall health. There are no guarantees on which one/both will survive. Thank you for watching and commenting. Please subscribe if you have not already! CaliKim

@@CaliKim29 thank you. It literally is damned if you do and damned if you don’t. lol. I never know what to do. I hate to damage the roots when trying to separate. I sometimes just cut the weaker one off at the soil.

It can be frustrating when your sugar baby watermelons seem to stall in growth. Here are a few tips that might help: Pollination: Watermelons require good pollination to develop properly. You can encourage pollination by attracting bees and other pollinators to your garden with flowers or by gently shaking the vines to distribute pollen. Watering: Watermelons need consistent moisture, especially during fruit development. Ensure they're getting about 1-2 inches of water per week, particularly during dry spells. Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruits and vegetables to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and fruit development. Pruning: Sometimes, pruning excessive foliage can redirect energy into fruit production. Focus on pruning away any non-essential vines or leaves. Temperature: Watermelons thrive in warm temperatures. Ensure they're getting plenty of sun, as cooler temperatures can slow down growth. Patience: Watermelons can take 70-90 days to mature depending on the variety. Sometimes they just need a bit more time to reach their full size. Hang in there and continue caring for your plants with these tips. Hopefully, you'll soon see those sugar baby watermelons growing and ripening beautifully! CK

Pinch off any suckers to keep aphid points down and let it keep only one fruit per plant for best results. Aphids can wipe out a vine in a day, I dont even bother with watermelon anymore its too bothersome for me.

WHAT ABOUT ...POWERED..MILK..& WATER?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 2 ай бұрын
Using powdered milk and water as a fertilizer or foliar spray for plants, including sugar baby watermelons, can be beneficial due to its nutrient content. Powdered milk contains calcium, proteins, and other nutrients that can support plant health. Some tips - Avoid Overuse: While milk can be beneficial, too much can create an environment conducive to mold and bacteria. Use it sparingly and in conjunction with other fertilizers and soil amendments. Observe your plants for any adverse reactions, such as leaf burn or mold growth, and adjust the concentration or frequency of application accordingly. Use milk as a supplement to a balanced fertilizer regimen. Milk provides calcium but may not supply all the nutrients your watermelons need. CaliKim
