I have been using birdseed sunflowers, this was my first attempt and they were delicious, I put them in smoothies with other sprouts. very good. Sprout ice cream made with frozen bananas and other fruit taste very good.

Hello, I have recently gotten into growing microgreens, I have mostly been successful in sprouting everything except for my organic black oil sunflower seeds. I have been soaking them for 12 hours and rinsing for 24 more. They pop out of the seeds but after transfering them onto my micromat compostable grow medium, the little white buds turn brown and then black, withering instead of rooting into the medium. I have checked my ph is a normal 7. I used a black 20x10 tray and another as a blackout dome. As I said my other sprouts are doing fine, exept for the sunflowers and the raddish who is rooting but much slower than they others. Also sprouting basic/spicy salad mix, brocolli, cabbage, mustard, and basil. Any ideas why my sunflowers will not take root into the medium?
@SuperfoodEvolution6 жыл бұрын
Is the soil moist? Are you misting the seeds at least once a day? Are they in light where they can heat up? Do you have a cover on top, preferably an inverted 10x20 tray?

What do you do with the soil after harvesting? Can you reuse it? I know people can compost, but I live in an apartment without much room for composting and don't like the idea of having to throw the precious, costly soil out.

Sailor Girl That was a while back and my short term memory is not what it used to be, but I think I remember someone saying that the pesticides used for growing birdseed would also be in the ground and hence the ground water that the roots of the plant uptake into the body of the planet and I assume that would be transferred to their offspring (seeds) as well as pesticide being sprayed directly on the sunflower seeds themselves. I do not know how much is absorbed or how much is transferred and there are no studies that show that they have followed the lifespan of the birds who have consumed these seeds (now that would be interesting to know!) So, it is still up to you and me to make the choice and take the chance of the cheaper (with pesticide) or the organic, more expensive seed (without pesticides) I have purchased nuts that are not organic and I rinse them several times in a jar and one rinse with a mixture or white vinegar and water and then several clear rinses again, before I soak them in distilled water with liquid trace minerals. I guess the same could be done for sunflower seeds intended for sprouting, yet still some of the pesticide is actually inside the seed itself. My long winded opinion, for what it is worth!! :-)
@oolum8 жыл бұрын
Great minds think a like. I do the same things when I rinse and soak nuts and seeds that are not organic. Sometimes, I just can't afford 16 a pound for organic almonds. But, I rinse obsessively and then with vinegar and water, then I soak in distilled water with trace minerals.

Thanks for the video! It was very useful. I experimented successfully with black oil sunflowers a few years ago but got put off by mould (I didn't know to ventilate with a fan back then). I am curious though, why do you pre-sprout in a jar? I had great germination rates by planted the seed directly in the soil. Also is there not a risk of knocking off the important tap root as you spread the sprouts out lightly pat them down?
@carollopez85977 жыл бұрын
is the white, fuzzy mold the same one that makes the tempeh? if so, then it is harmless and nutritious. If I get that when I sprout my birdseed then I will immediately make some tempeh and won't need a starter because the mold is naturally in the air.
