I just grew my first sunflowers this summer and they are such a joy in the garden. Although not this dwarf variety, the tallest mine got were around 11-12 feet high. As a beginning gardener, I highly recommend growing it!

Gorgeous!!! I tried growing the Mammoth Russian type of sunflowers. They grew very tall and for them being sunflowers, they couldn't tolerate the heat last month here in 8b zone. Go figure LOL!!! I like the dwarf sunflowers you have grown. Beautiful indeed!!!

I can totally relate to that, same issue with the tall sunflowers. The dwarf ones are easier to handle and they bare several flowers on one stem. Glad you like my flowers and thank you so much for your comment!😊

I grew a few sunflowers last year, but just when they were looking nice, the squirrels chewed them off, and stole them!!! 🤬 This next year, I plan on trying again, but going to build a cage out of chicken wire to TRY to protect them! 😝

Truly one of the most pleasant gardening channels. I was just wondering, do you ever save your seeds from plants or do you just buy them for convenience sake (not having to worry about cross pollination etc.) Thanks!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. I do collect seeds from some of my plants but it depends. I have a limited space to grow vegetables so for some plants that need more time to go to seed, it is not feasible for me to wait and keep the space unused, so instead I plant something else. However for some plants that the seeds are easier to collect and the ones that I like, I sure collect their seed, like tomatoes, zucchinis, melons, peppers, herbs,... . And on the cross pollination, as I said my garden is not huge and usually I don't have different varieties growing at the same time. Although in some cases like zinnias I don't mind at all to have cross pollination to get different colors. And I am truly grateful for your support. Cheers!

Annuals mean they don’t come back the next season, correct? You would have to start over the following year? Thank you!
@TowardGarden

Yes, that is correct. Annuals don't come back next season and you should start from seeds again (vs. Perennials which will grow back next year). Thank you for visiting!

These are amazing!!! Im trying to grow some myself and so excited bcs of your video! I do have one question, how often do you water them? Does "keep well watered" mean water everyday, or only when the top soil is dry? Thanks in advance!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. Sunflowers like to be well watered. If it is hot, water them everyday for sure. But in general when top soil is dry they need to be watered. Hope it helps and thank you so much for your comment. Happy growing!

@@TowardGarden Thank you! Follow up questions, during pre germination stage, 1) do we have to keep the paper towel wet all the time? Meaning that we have to spray with water whenever they get dry? 2) does germinating the seeds require sun? Or can I keep it indoor until it germinates? Again, thanks a bunch! I appreciate you responding to the comments. Helps a total beginner such as myself. Cheers!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
@@thecheesefriz7741 Germination do need sun (or any light) and should be done inside. If you keep the seed inside a container, most probably you just need to wet paper towel once and it wouldn't get dry. Specially since germination happens quick in few days so it would be rare for paper towel to get dry. (but if it happened, yes spray again). Good luck and happy growing.

How does one stop the squirrles and rabbits from eating the seedlings?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 ай бұрын
I have a dog and he usually takes care of squirrels not getting close to the plants. I have heard that if you use squirrel trap amzn.to/3UA75Zp , they learn that it is not safe for them and try not to get close to that area. You may also use garden nettings over seedlings, but not sure if it works against squirrels. Hope you will find a good solution and thank you for your comment!

Great video! What mixture of soil would u use in grow bags please ?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 5 ай бұрын
You can check my other videos and you can use the either the mix for vegetables, or the mix I used for other flower (such as calendula). If you are using bagged compost, use 50% compost, 25% coir/peat moss, 25% perlite). I will post a video on the potting mix very soon. Happy growing and thank you for the comment!

How do you keep slugs away?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 5 ай бұрын
We don't have big problem with slugs here, but placing a shallow bowl of beer next to plants to catch slugs helps. Or you can use organic slug bait such as Sluggo which is basically iron phosphate. Another great option is to sprinkle food grade DE Diatomaceous earth on plants to stop slugs crossing amzn.to/3MumnvJ . Hope this helps and good luck!
