I grew pumpkins once when I was 14 and I loved it. There something about gardening that just makes me so happy. I did greenhouse my senior year and I thrived in that class. Last year I did my first full garden by myself. I learned so much and had successes and failures. I think it’s because I did start later in the year. This year I started in February with all of my plants from seed. It’s going so well and I’m so excited to even have more fruits and vegetables!

I feel this. My first year doing a full garden was last year. Wow. I was so full of myself. I thought I knew everything. Its amazing how much you learn from failure. This year was a grand improvement on that first try. Failed quite a bit this year too. But just slightly less lmao

I've been wanting to grow pumpkin/squash since I started gardening last year. Unfortunately, I don't have space to grow it. So, I put it off. Then, I came accross this video few days ago. I literally bought kabocha squash seeds after watching your video. Now, 4 of my Kabocha Squash seeds are thriving. I definitely will follow your tips once they are ready for transplanting. Thanks for sharing. Wish me luck!

This video is great. Would it be possible to clarify what you mean when you say “water regularly”. Once a week? Everyday? Every other day? I know it should be about 1-2” inches of water a week but I’m not sure on how often. Thanks!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Watering rate can depend on many factors like weather, pot type, soil mix,... I watered my grow bag daily because fabric pots evaporate lots of water. Plastic containers can be watered every other day. If it is hot, or you see wilted leaves, water more frequently (some days I watered twice a day). Pumpkins have shallow roots so always make sure the soil surface is not dry. In any case, as you said water deeply instead of just sprinkling the surface of the soil. Thank you very much for your comment and Happy Gardening!

I am doing this this year as well. I have an entire set up in my back yard against the back wall. Just remember one thing- they set out roots at the vine nodes. They do that for water and protection against the vine borers. You won't get a badass harvest if they can't do it. So Im setting shelves of soil horizontally in three foot sections so that as the vines grow upward they have a spot to set in extra roots. Im screwed for space in my yard so that was my only option. I just used scavenged wood. Seriously dude theres so much free wood everywhere.

@@jnjagr7982 In general, I don't recommend more than one pumpkin plants per pot. Instead use smaller pots but grow individually. Pumpkins have shallow roots and will perform best if not planted close to each other. When I plant 2 plants in a pot, I usually get fewer and smaller fruits. You can go as small as 7 gallon grow bags or 14 in wide pots for small variety pumpkins. I hope this helps.

just stumbling on this. Looks like a smaller than-average yield than if planted traditionally but then it also looks like your potted one without the trellis had a very small yield. Very cool and I may still try this.

You sure can have different results depending on the growing condition. For the same variety, I get different yield on different years. The main purpose here is to show the growing process. Thank you very much for your comment!

@@TowardGarden I’m going to give a few a try using this method. I’m on my third year trying to grow kabocha squash. First year I had an amazing yield. Last year - zip 😢 The soil just went to crap last year and it was blazing hot and no amount of watering was enough. This season we are using a new space and I’m also going to try a couple like this. Can’t hurt! I love to mess around with something new and different every year.

Great video, thank you!! Could you tell me what fertilizer did you use? Last year I got all male flowers no female. I'm going to try again so any advise would be very much appreciated!!!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 жыл бұрын
I used organic 3-4-4 N-P-K fertilizer (Garden-tone). You can use any balanced fertilizer like 5-5-5 (make sure it has calcium or add some garden lime to it). Try to avoid high nitrogen fertilizer; too much nitrogen can prevent flowering. Some other reasons for no female flowers could be: planting too close together, hot or humid weather, and too much or too little watering. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

Many thanks for your video! I just started gardening a year ago and have a question regarding the part about complete fertilizer around week ten of this video. What exactly does complete fertilizer mean? I want to be a pro at growing the finest backyard pumpkins in my town! And of course having alot of fun during the learning process Lol! Thanks again! Absolutely love your channel! 🎃🎃
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
So glad you love the channel. A complete fertilizer has all three elements of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash (N-P-K) plus calcium which is critical for plants in containers. It is better if it has a balanced ratio like 10-10-10, 5-5-5, or usually for fruit vegetables with a higher ratio of P, K. I usually use 3-4-4. As an easy option, whenever is doubt, you can use any organic tomato fertilizer available. Wishing you a great harvest. Thank you so much for your comment and happy gardening!

Is it okay to plant that variety in tropical country?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes. But in tropical climate it is better and easier to grow them throughout the dry season. The wet season can increase fungal problems and delay rippening. Thank you very much for getting in touch!

Glad you love the video. Yes, you are correct. Like any garden insects are part of it. For leafminers, the best solution I've found is using spinosad mix (it is organic) Monterery garden insect spray is one of the good choices, I have listed it in my amazon page here www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6/list/XLDNRZO26ESK?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d . hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

Hi im growing pumpkin toi and i can say you don't need to germinate them in paper towel first,they are tough plant and it will just alright to put on the soil.Rather,the tiny and dust like small seed are the one who benefit more with the paper towel,also pea seed.they often got mold so you can sort only the healthy sprout before transplanting them into soil

@TowardGarden

I am guessing they are wilting due to transplant shock, either exposed to too much sun/heat or roots were disturbed. Provide them some shade and keep them well watered until they recover. I hope this helps!

Just an indirect sunlight, such as a window sill. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Make sure to harden off seedlings (moving out to outside conditions) before planting.

Okay so I know that this video was made four months ago but hopefully you can respond. I am currently growing a pumpkin in a pot and it's fairly big. I already have a pumpkin growing (I hand pollinated it) and it's about the size of a tennis ball. As the pumpkin started to get bigger... all the other small female buds turned yellow. I removed them because I didnt want the yellow to spread a disease, is that normal for all the other female buds to rot when growing a pumpkin? My plant isnt "HUGE" so I only wanted one pumpkin to grow so it could put more effort into the ONE pumpkin. Last year I wasnt successful with growing a pumpkin and I really wanted to grow one this year. I'm also using the small sugars. Thank you for your time hopefully you will be able to get back to me.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 2 жыл бұрын
It looks like you are on the right track. Most likely the small yellow buds are the ones that were pollinated poorely and should have been removed, which you did. They wouldn't mature anyway. I think all is fine with your pumpkin and you will harvest one healthy pumpkin soon. Thank you very much for visiting and good luck!
