I know I will always find the answer to the question I'm seeking if I go to one of your videos. Plus getting to listen to your enchanting accent. I would like to suggest to you, and every other person making gardening videos, that a clear, lingering shot of where you're cutting, is invaluable. Thank you for all the help you've given me over the years.

Thanks and welcome to our channel. As time permits, you may want to scroll through our channel and view some of our other (many) videos on the subject of Clematis. Over the years, we've refined and updated our selection to include the BEST performers for our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern US region and since your conditions are similar to that these offerings should work well for you too. Hopefully, after viewing them and enacting our various tips and suggestions, you'll be able to turn your "struggles" into triumphs! 😉👍💚 Have you subscribed to our channel? Tenacious, resourceful and determined people that dealt with a lot of adversity - so if (or when) your struggles in gardening occur, your ancestorial heritage should see you through! 😉😊💚👏

Thank you, that is so nice of you to say so. This is David replying...., and I pleased to mention that I regard myself to be very lucky to be working with my very talented and skillful colleagues. They do (daily) an amazing job, consistently tending to, nurturing and producing healthy, vigorous, beautifully grown plants that are poised to get off to a perfect start. This is further extended by the network of (usually) family owned garden centers that distribute our plants - people that are rooted in their community, know the area (and conditions), and are ready to provide on the spot help and advice. As you can guess, this just didn't happen over night or by chance .... It's part of a careful, considered strategy that is dedicated to to trying to do the best job possible. I know there are some really good growers and garden centers in NI (some of them are old friends), so I suggest you keep an eye out for a good source and stick with them once you find them. Thanks again for you kind comments.

Thank you, it is great to hear from you, thanks for tuning in and watching. Establishing shelter is the key to building a good garden, and historically there's lots of instances where shelterbelts were planted first in windy localities, and then once established, in the lee of them, great (world famous) gardens have been created. So with planning, patience and persistence, good conditions for enjoying beautiful clematis can be achieved. Meanwhile, look for any sheltered (sunny) spots behind walls and buildings, erect solid trellis or strands of galvanized wire and you should be able to have a few plants flourish. Have you subscribed to our channel? There are three groups in which clematis are generally categorized in terms of their blooming period which in turn determines how and when they are to be pruned, especially in cold climate areas. I believe the 'General Sikorski' variety falls in either the second or third group. Thanks for the lovely video!
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 жыл бұрын
Like a lot of things in life, it is often tough to be hard and fast about categorizing things, and Clematis General Sikorski is a variety that is remarkably adaptable and forgiving. I've seen it pruned hard at several times of the year, early spring, later in the spring, and in summer and it still grows back and BLOOMS in the same year! So, while the general consents is the place Clematis into pruning groups like you describe, there are some like this one that doesn't quite fit all the time.

Great story! Thanks. I have a Clematis Paniculata (white, and blooms in the fall) growing up my trellis at tree, however outgrew, so I tied a pair of panthose around those onto the tree. I also planted one in a pot (Purple Jackmanii) but will definitely transplant with one by tree. 2 different blooming cycles, ofcourse! When I planted in container, I most certainly added medium sized pebbles in the bottom before soil, understanding their cool roots! Thanks for info on pruning. Appreciated 💜💚

If not, here's a link that will take you through the steps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXnNZ2Ccor1sps0 But, of course when you watch it, you will see that to complete the task you simply have to have "an enormous shovel" (ha ha)! OMG! Thanks David!👍🏾 I have a Beautiful Clematis on a light pole in front of my house that I planted 4 yrs ago. It has never had full Beautiful blooms until this Late Spring. Simply Gorgeous!! The only thing I did different was that I left it alone all winter. Usually I trim it back to the ground for a better appearance. It was ugly all winter...but I just ignored it 😆. Thanks for your video! I think I now know how to treat this particular Clematis. I will lightly prune after it finishes flowering. Thanks again David🍃🌱🌿💚

Thank you for watching and welcome to our channel. There clematis selections do not come true for seed, and even if they did, it is a very slow process and it would take many years before you would get to any sort of size. Our plants are vegetatively propagated, so they always come true to type and when we ship them to the garden centers, they are nice big, premium sized plants that will get you off to a speedy start. I know you are not in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, so the closest garden centers to you that carry our plants are going to be in the Washington DC area: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ so, perhaps sometime you are making a trip up our way you might want to include a stop or two on your itinerary. They will like that, but if your shade is on the heavy and intense side, you are likely to not get many flowers. Is there any way you can train the tops around a corner, up a trellis, fence or arbor, or into a spot somehow to get at least a few hours sunlight? The more light you can provide the more compact and freer flowering the plant is likely to be. Have you subscribed to our channel? I never knew to cut the old flowers off. You said to cut them to a node, but I couldn't see what a node was. I am guessing that's where a leaf comes out?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 2 жыл бұрын
That's correct, a "node" is the joint in the stem where the two (opposite) leaves sprout out. There's a little bud tucked in at the two leaf joints and when you prune above that, those buds are encouraged to grow out. When you get a chance you might like to scroll through and catch some of our other videos on clematis (and there's quite a few), because in the content you will find several tips of pruning and taking care of clematis including some with Mr. Raymond Evison where he describes how to give some of his varieties the "ponytail chop" in early spring (when he gathers the stems together and cuts them back to about 9-10")! Since your plant has not been pruned previously, here's a link to a video that describes (towards the end) how to prune them by taking off about a third of the growth (again in early spring): kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXu3eKh6pNN6g9k which I think might be the best course of action for now. LOVE the History, your instruction, & of course clematis' but I still feel uncertain of the exact spot to cut. I'm afraid I'll hurt it, cut in wrong spot. How sensitive are they.
@OverdevestNurseries

Thank you for your kind comments. You don't have to be too concerned about the exact spot to prune. The plants are resilient and forgiving, if you prune harder you will just induce more growth . If you are nervous about this just take it back lightly, then as your confidence grows you can be bolder in subsequent years.

@@OverdevestNurseries oh thank you so much! This is my clematis' 4th year so it's super strong now! Good to know they're TOUGH. I've always wanted one (& plan on adding other colors). After watching your History lesson, I think I know what variety I want to track down. What a neat story!! Those stories don't get told enough!! I probably got 200 blooms this year & would love to see that a second time this year (don't ask for much, huh)😆

I've had a stunning, large white Henryi for many years. Last year it turned black & I thought I'd lost it to a blight. Luckily it's come back, but so far, see only one vine at about 2' high, now nearing the end of April in Z5B/ USA. I'm wondering if I should go beyond cutting off the old black vines, by digging it up, relocating it, & giving it a feeding, in case there are spores in the soil. It had been enjoying its location at the corner of an East facing wall & a South facing wall, where it bloomed at the same time as its neighbors. It's been given shade at its roots & has been free to grow as high as it likes, while twining up & hiding electrical & cable lines for me. Up until last year, it had been always vigorous & covered in huge white blooms once a year. I didn't cut the old vines, in spring, thinking the new growth would have the old vines to grow along with, as they all filled with leaves & then flowers. Next to it, on the East wall, is a boisterous, arching Weigela with green leaves & coral/pink/red trumpets. At it left, on the South facing wall, a native here in MA, A large Mountain Laurel, whose blossoms are white clusters of unique cup shaped blossoms with a slight pink cast. Is it possible that it became vulnerable to a blight, due to overcrowding? I'd let it sprawl all over the nearby shrubs, though most of its vines vines were spanning the space between those shrubs. Your yard is perfectly lovely, & I appreciated your tip for using chicken wire painted black, & your reasoning for removing the seedheads. I've always left them on as they add interest & the Henryi only blooms once per season, though I have seen a few, smaller blossoms show up later than the 1st flush - which lasts an amazingly long time.

Clematis wilt is a baffling disease that is known to suddenly attack an otherwise healthy and strong grown plant. I am not sure anyone knows exactly what is going on but I would certainly remove all old wilted (black) growth and trim back vigorously any that show any signs of wilting (which is usually more apparent in hot sunny weather). If I were you, I would not try to transplant it, rather nurse it with a gentle feed, adding a layer of mulch and watering if the weather turns dry at any point. Another thought might be to mix up a general fungicide and water this on by drenching around the crown of the plant. And once you get some good strong growth going again, it might be worth peeling back the mulch and replacing it with a good nutritious layer of compost, the idea would be to see if you can encourage new (nearer the surface) roots and shoots

@@OverdevestNurseries Thank you. Sounds like good advice. The wilt arrived last year & so far the new growth looks healthy, though just one shoot. Will try your suggestions & hope for the best.

Great video, thanks. If you need to paint that lamppost what do you do?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
That's easy, you can either wait to winter time when the plant goes dormant. Or if you need to paint it during the growing season, just open up the chicken wire on one side (its just a long thin piece that is bent around the lamppost) and lay it down on the ground. Then when the post is painted and dry, reaffix the wire back again. The tendrils of the clematis will be intertwined with the chicken wire and because the are base of the clematis stems are quite flexible, they can be laid to one side without doing much damage. So Beautiful. I don't have a lamppost but I was thinking it would be so Stunning growing on my metal porch posts. We have a Great nursery in Brownstown ,MICHIGAN Called Ruhlig Farms I go there at least 10 times during the Spring and Summer months. They have such an array of Gorgeous Flowering plants and Vegetables and Herbs And unusual plants and so healthy too. I spent hours in that store just circling that nursery, picking out the perfect plant. I don't know why it bugs me , when I watch some people just grab anything with giving it a thought and grab the most scraggly and weak plant. I like to say there is better ones over there and but there is some people you can suggest that too and some people you can tell to stay away from 😠😠 Thank you so much for for such a Great inspiration and lessons learned. Sincerely Patricia Ann Griggs 👧💚💚💚

Your metal porch posts should be fine. You might have to put down a little chicken wire or garden twine for it to cling to, something to get it started and if the posts are smooth, something to prevent it from slipping down. 😉👍💚

I was hoping you would show how to prune back my miniature clematis for the winter. I have what looks like woody vines coming from the ground and vine clear up my trellis, but I am afraid to cut those out. I live in Oregon, so get very mild frost occasionally in the winter. I have three very young plants, but they climb up at least 10 feet high on each of my three trellises on my porch each year. Do I completely trim those “dead” stems to the ground at the end of summer?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can trim them back to about 10-12' from the ground. David and world renowned Clematis expert Mr. Raymond Evison talk about this in some of our other videos. You can do it in the Fall but we know David likes to do it in early spring, just before new growth begins. Oh ..beautiful..thanks. I have a very old well established clematis on our lamp post. However it’s not able to climb as there’s nothing for it to cling to (ie chicken wire) as you stated. Each year I try and wind green garden twine in between large clumps and draw them up. But before long they slide down again. Do you suggest taking all the twine away and separating the clematis as much as possible, put up the chicken wire and hope it will attach itself? Thanks ❤️
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 3 жыл бұрын
As you have probably noticed in the video this type of clematis climbs up things by twining their young leaf stems around parts of the structure - chicken wire works well but you could also use netting, trellis etc. anything that is steady and preferably fixed in a static position. I also use twine in another part of my garden... and to stop the plants slipping down, I tie knots and crosspieces in the twine.
