Lots of very useful information for anyone who wants to try this. I found it interesting how they need soil with no nutrition and rainwater.

I think it's probably because of the nature of Venus fly traps. They aren't exactly carnivorous. They don't really "eat" their insect prey for direct nutrition. They actually ingest them and break them down into simplar forms with which they can fix their own soils. Animal (insects in this case) tissue is basically proteins. And proteins mean nitrogen and phosphorus, both of which are crucial requirements in the plants' nutrition. That's probably why a Venus fly trap seed would need a soil medium that lacks nutrition. I mean, isn't that why they are "carnivorous"? So that they can fix their infertile soil.(fertile for them to germinate in, ironically)

Hi Lyn, Just watched your video - i used to keep traps when i was a kid - i am 43 now and want to try growing from seed. I live in the sout west of England, do you think a shed with a window that gets moderate sunlight would be ok - or should i keep them in doors on a window sill. Thanks
@desertplantsofavalon

Hi Neil :-) thanks so much for watching :-) if your shed gets sunshine during the day that will be absolutely fine to grow your seeds and Fly trap in as these plants can take the colder temperatures, but if your shed only gets a small amount of sun then you would definitely be best to keep the on a windowsill that receives plenty of sunshine once they have germinated, because Venus fly traps love as much sunshine as you can give them :-) sending you an abundance of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Thursday XXXXX

I may have missed a step in your video, but I want to know if you should poke tiny holes in each of the two containers so it can moisturize better with the water in the large container. Do I need to do that for them to germinate? Also, I have seen some growing strategies for flytraps that use saran-wrap to cover them rather than placing them in a large plastic bag. Is the bag better for the best growth?
@desertplantsofavalon

Hi Pat :-D yes its a good idea to put some holes in the containers, you dont need to do that for the seeds to germinate but its better to do this, I love to use the bag method but you can cover the containers with clear wrap cover too instead of the clear bags, good luck with growing from seeds and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER and have a wonderful Monday today XXXX

Hi Lyn, thanks for the informative video! I've planted my Venus fly trap seeds 2 weeks ago and it has not germinate. I noticed that a coat of whitish thingy formed around the seeds once the seeds get wet. Is that normal?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there :-D yes the good news is that when the seeds are ready to germinate they will form a bit of a fuzz around them and this is often the tiny root hairs emerging, a lot of people panic and think it is fungus but its nearly always due to the germination process, keep a close eye on them though just in case it is fungus and if it is you will need to spray them with a fungicidal spray for plants, Good luck with growing your seeds and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday today XXXX

I bought these seeds and planted them at least 1.5 weeks ago. They have a dome top, but there is air holes at the top. Nothing is happening. Am I doing something wrong? It is inside, by the sun, but it's also winter here in WI, so my house is set at 68-70. The sun hits them for a couple of hours at most. Any tips please?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Megan :-D it can take a month or even more sometimes for the seeds to germinate, and I am sure they will germinate in time as it sounds like you are doing everything right, keep the soil moist at all times with rainwater and never allow the soil to dry out at any time, as long as you have sown the seeds in 100 % pure carnivorous soil or pure peat without any additional fertilisers and you are using pure rainwater or distilled water they should germinate in the next few days/ weeks :-D XXXXXX

Hi , Great video I've sowed some vft seeds in march and end of April about a 3rd had sprouted, I've got a couple of questions I hope you won't mind helping me with.. I'm loosing a few of the sprouted vft seedlings, I was keeping them in a bag with hole's poked in unless it was very sunny so I've stopped leaving them in the bag during the day as I was worried they might be getting attacked by fungus. Im not sure if that's helped though so I don't keep the water level in my saucer so high to make the moss peat a lille less damp. I don't have a green house or conservatory so I bring them in at night and take them out in the morning but they only get south eastern UK sun... Any suggestions to help me not loose any more.?

Hello, I have a few questions. I've recently ordered some seeds off of amazon and am waiting on then to arrive, but I was curious as to if I'm able to just get one single fly trap by its self? Like, will every seed produce one and the reason I usually see them in bunches is because the seeds are scattered in the same pot? And if I can do this if it'll cause any harm to the plant without being surrounded? Also, where show I keep my plant? I'm very interested in the plant but very new aswell haha. Thank you!

Great Video! I have a question, I bought a DIY Venus FlyTrap kit at a local super market and it says to freeze the seeds for 2 days, a “cooling period”. Is this necessary? @desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom :-) thanks so much for watching :-) it sounds like you are doing everything right with the lights but if you are not using soil especially for carnivorous plants then the seeds will not grow and will most likely die as these plants need a totally mineral free soil e.g pure peat or sphagnum moss, as soil from the ground or multi purpose composts will prevent the germination and kill any of the young seedlings if they germinate, hope this helps and good luck with growing from seed :-) sending tons of love and happy growing from Ireland for a wonderful day XXXX

Hi Aidn, oh no, yes Carnivorous seeds wont grow and will die in cactus and succulent soil mix, Carnivorous plant seeds need to be sown in only Carnivorous soil or pure sphagnum moss as any nutrients in the soil will kill them, Cactus and succulent soil is too drying and contains nutrients which is a disaster for Carnivorous plants, so sorry you have already sown them, I would go back to the garden centre and tell them they need to learn about the plants they sell, I hope you will be able to find more seeds and sow again in Carnivorous soil, thanks so much for watching and good luck with growing from seeds XXXX
