I think it's probably because of the nature of Venus fly traps. They aren't exactly carnivorous. They don't really "eat" their insect prey for direct nutrition. They actually ingest them and break them down into simplar forms with which they can fix their own soils. Animal (insects in this case) tissue is basically proteins. And proteins mean nitrogen and phosphorus, both of which are crucial requirements in the plants' nutrition. That's probably why a Venus fly trap seed would need a soil medium that lacks nutrition. I mean, isn't that why they are "carnivorous"? So that they can fix their infertile soil.(fertile for them to germinate in, ironically)

for you what is the best soil for venusflytrap
@desertplantsofavalon7 жыл бұрын
Hi David :-D I love to use pure peat as it is nutrient free and cheap to purchase from ebay and garden shops, if you buy special soil from garden centres especially for carnivorous plants it can be pricey but pure peat is far more economical and lightweight to use too :-D thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic Sunday XXXX

Sorry I'm loss... Should I use pure sphagnum peat moss without soil as additional? As in only the moss is in the pot?
@IanD.6 жыл бұрын
And also did you put holes below those containers? plz answer TIA
@desertplantsofavalon6 жыл бұрын
Hi there :_D yes its best to use pure sphagnum peat moss and no soil unless it is 100% carnivorous plant soil in the pot as any soil that contains nutrients will kill these plants, use only pure sphagnum moss or soil especially for carnivorous plants when sowing these seeds

I may have missed a step in your video, but I want to know if you should poke tiny holes in each of the two containers so it can moisturize better with the water in the large container. Do I need to do that for them to germinate? Also, I have seen some growing strategies for flytraps that use saran-wrap to cover them rather than placing them in a large plastic bag. Is the bag better for the best growth?
@desertplantsofavalon4 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat :-D yes its a good idea to put some holes in the containers, you dont need to do that for the seeds to germinate but its better to do this, I love to use the bag method but you can cover the containers with clear wrap cover too instead of the clear bags, good luck with growing from seeds and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER and have a wonderful Monday today XXXX

so are they good indoor plants because I have 500 seeds coming in and have they germinated and do you use the same soil as you started of with in the beginning
@desertplantsofavalon8 жыл бұрын
Hi there :-) yes these Venus fly traps make excellent indoor plants as long as you can give them plenty of either rain water or distilled water and keep them in a higher humidity atmosphere, I place mine on trays filled with rainwater as this helps to give them the extra humidity :-) yes I use the same soil that I started off with, but when it comes to potting on these plants you can use any good quality carnivorous soil mixture or either pure peat moss or Sphagnum moss :-) good luck with growing these amazing plants and sending you heaps of love and happy growing fro a FANTASTIC weekend XXXX

Can I use peat moss mixed perlite? And how often do you open the zip bag?
@desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын
Hi there :-D yes if you use pure peat mss you can definitely add perlite into it too, I open the Zip lock bag once the seeds have germinated, but still keep them in the bag to keep the humidity high for the seedlings, I would just open the zip back about half way and make sure the soil is always moist with rainwater at all times :-D Good luck with growing from seed and thanks so much for watching XXXX

Hi, Im also curious for the coco peat as an alternative for the moss since it is more accessible for me, I think it also does not have any nutrition but what do you think @Desert Plants of Avalon ?

@@keeraborromeo7594 Hi there :-D I am pretty sure that Coco coir has very little if any nutrients and may be safe to use with Carnivorous plants, but because I have not used it myself I would not want to say 100% as I have heard that some Coco peat / coir has added salts that can be harmful, it can be difficult to say for sure, if you do decide to use it I would soak the coco peat for 24 hours in rainwater or distilled water and keep changing the water every few hours to remove any traces of salts etc, Good luck with growing your seeds and if you use the coco peat /coir let me know how you get on, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Sunday XXXX
