As he suggested, one of the easiest ways to kill a Flytrap is with tapster. I have a gallon of distilled water, just in case... but I try to keep a gallon container of rainwater, which I leave covered to keep out mosquitoes. I try to keep my traps in full morning sun, and protected from hot afternoon sun. Once every few months, I may 'overfeed' one plant with flies and/or live mealworms [sometimes decapitated so they can't chew threw a trap]. Feeding them is like providing a shot of fertilizer, and they'll grow bigger. I need to transplant some of them...

My grandson was visiting and my hubs bought him a Venus fly trap, so now I’m trying to keep it alive! I guess my instinct was correct, I took it out of the plastic container it came in and cut it down, put some rocks in the bottom added water and put the Venus fly trap back in it, with the pot actually sticking out of the plastic. Figured it would water from the bottom and add additional humidity, so I was on the right track. I do need to repot I see though. Where I messed up is that I had him in the east window. On a positive note, I was taking him outside during the day, then bringing him in at night, now I know I can leave him out! I’m actually in the process of moving, so will take him back with me to put him with my other plants who are all outside for the summer. Thank you so much for the info, now heading to your other videos!

8:30 Have been growing flytraps in a window sill for years, no problem. In summer best giving them morning or late afternoon/evenening sun, otherwise place them about a meter from the Window.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Жыл бұрын
I 100% believe you. The problem is, people who have success growing them in window sills are outliers. I have people message me every day that are trying to grow in a window sill and they are completely light starved. When giving care instructions to beginners I always advise against window sills. They are welcome to try it, but it's the easiest way for most to slowly kill their flytrap.

Was just about to ask this. I have a gollum jade in my window that I JUST put my Venus fly trap beside. This gollum jade grows a lot I’ve had it for years - even in the winter and I see new growth - I just like to keep it small and window sill size so I always cut it back. I do have multiple grow lights but I wanted to keep it in my kitchen - now I’m not sure where to put it but I just got it today as a gift so I’ll figure it out
@bigbotno15 ай бұрын
@@kaylacarter6144 Grow lights might be better indoor. 'Problem' when you keep flytrap outdoor is that most traps will be closed because of caught bugs (standing on the ground), got to keep a closer eye on wattering (drought and over wattering) and when you have to bring them indoor for winter best to repot because of living bugs in plant/soil. Also when keeping them outdoors they need to adjust to the light. Build up time outdoor.

The age of the window could impact the suns power. Typically newer windows are slightly tinted and designed to keep much of the sun out. Older windows don't have much of that. if it can't live in the window, can i just put it outside? Will the rain be too much?
@CarnivorousPlantsHubАй бұрын
Not usually. The only time rain might be too much is in very humid areas like Florida, Louisiana. To mitigate the rain you cam drill holes half way up your water tray, to make sure it doesn't stay filled to.the top.

Are glazed ceramic pots ok?

Yes! For the most part. The glaze should keep it from leaching.

Question: would it be OK to leave the Fly Trap outside on the porch if the night time temperatures dip down? We're in north Idaho and we're going to be going through spring now, so it'll be warmer days hitting in the 70-90 range and dipping down to the mid to low 40's sometimes 30's at night. Will it cause the Trap to go into a dormancy or will it be ok? Story time: I've gone through like 3 fly traps sadly. I first bought the $6 fly trap from Winco on a whim for my kiddo Grim and they then named it "Hydra". I bought from Amazon some Kapecute carnivorous plant soil mix that has a 70:30 mix of sphagnum moss debris and perlite and we have a gallon jug of distilled water that was _supposed_ to be for my husbands CPAP but he never uses and gave it to us for the plant. I also got a bottom reservoir plastic pot from Walmart to replant the trap into that'd hold water at the bottom. I also bought a container of small mealworms from petco, this was back in January and the worms that have been kept alive are now HUGE so we have to cut them in half to feed to Hydra. Hydra 1's traps got eaten by our cat so we got better at keeping him away. Hydra 2 and 3 were put in the bigger plastic pot immediately but because I put 2 in the 1 pot they didn't grow very well. Hydra 2 turned black and died, and after I disposed of the dead one I let the other take over the pot. The left over one didn't seem to grow very well but it might have been in a dormant stage? It had one long flower stalk growing but there weren't any traps left because they turned black and dried up. The whole plant seemed floppy and dead so I cut my losses and tossed it, which resulted in Grim berating me and saying it was probably just dormant. So now we're onto Hydra 4.0 and I'm here to try and make sure I don't mess it up. Grim was telling me that the trap is a swamp type of plant but I now see they were wrong and I'm going to give them the link to this video so we're on the same page. Thank you for the tips and I hope I don't kill this one this time. Live and Learn I guess, huh? TL;DR: Have gone through 3 traps and wound up killing them. On Trap #4 and I'm trying to do better.

Hey! Which part of North Idaho? I'm in post falls, I'm very familiar with your weather. I just moved all my flytraps outside with this nice weather that we've been having. They should be fine now. I usually look for overnight temps to stay at 40 or above. Flytraps are hardy though, they can do 30s as long as it stays above freezing. They even survive occasionally freezes. How about the northern lights the other night? Hopefully you were able to go out and see them!

Just watered for the first times with tap water foor the first time before i watched your video what should i do
@CarnivorousPlantsHub4 ай бұрын
I would just flush with some distilled water. Water, let it drain out of the bottom. Do this 5 to 7 times. This will flush out any minerals you put in with the tap water.

can they use filtered fridge water
@CarnivorousPlantsHub3 ай бұрын
Probably not, you would have to measure with a tds meter to be sure. Most filters do not filer minerals.

If I use distilled water from a bottle do I still need the thermometer to test it?

What about Spring water. I collect water to drink from a spring on my property and wondering if is would be ok to feed my traps from this source. I’m probably leaning to No but would appreciate a professional answer
@CarnivorousPlantsHub6 ай бұрын
That's a great question. Honestly, it's impossible for me to answer though. It all depends on where you live and the mineral count in the ground. You would need a TDS meter to measure thr waters dissolved solids. I go over some of that in this video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4i7ooCNZpiJjrssi=sJlSOD-ZC1VNXNNz

Hard to say for sure. You would have to measure with a TDS meter.

Hi there, found your video very interesting, I am thinking about growing some Venus Fly Traps. I went to your website to download the tracking sheets and I used 3 different emails since last night and I still haven't received any emails with the tracking sheets :(

Oh no, sometimes that happens. Shoot me an email at cplantshub@gmail.com and I'll reply with the tracker and care sheet!
