Just purchased one today. It was on clearance at the nursery. Looking forward to getting this planted along my fence.

Where I live, I am surrounded by woods, but part of it I left grow wild. I have one of these and it is easily over 12 to 15 feet high! I had no idea what it was. Thanks for the info.

I have a question Im not sure what to do with this shrub. We got some extreme cold weather here in ark in Feb and the cold kill all the top of it. But it's coming out at the bottom. It looks awful now should I trim all the dead off the top or wait until fall. This shrub was so pretty and now it looks awful.

Can you plant them near a house? Do the roots throw a lot of volunteers?

@hortube with Jim Putnam, I just went into my local nursery and they said what you did about aphids. I grow vegetables so that scared me. Is this true? Should I consider removing my existing plant to prevent an aphid invasion on my property? Maybe the question I should be asking is how to control aphids without doing damage to the bees? (the latter being the reason I planted it in the first place -- the bees and birds).

Hey Jim, quick heads up.. not sure if you're still in biz or not (hope so!) but your site seems to be compromised and redirects to spam/malware sites! Something to check out, at least.. hoping to see you back online. Would love to order some plants from you!

The thorns are killers! However, the berries come on last years growth so if you hard prune it, you'll have a season without berries, but it will look awesome the next season.

Hi, Jim . I'm enjoying your videos. I watched another video that said these would grow in shade. I would like to grow them along my fence to discourage the neighborhood cats from jumping my fence to kill the birds I feed. I think the spines would be a good deterrent. Would they grow in the shade and just not produce many berries or will the plant suffer? There is some dappled sunlight but the area is mostly shade. I was so excited when I thought these would be the answer to my problem. haha

+Meredith Klein It will almost certainly be leggy, but that can helped with pruning. Usually I tell people to get one and try it for a season.

Give it a go, try on the Northside of your house or protected microclimate. Pyracantha grows in zone 5 even in the semi-desert environment of the Colorado front range. Ours was still growing after being abandoned for two years.

Jim, would this plant survive Phoenix, AZ summer heat? Our community is looking to replace the aging Oleanders next to our outside wall and we wanted something fast growing and thorny. Can Pyracantha tolerate the sustained 100+ degree days we have during the summer? Thank you!

I really don't know on the pyracantha, but I would think Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon' would work.

About how far apart do these need to planted?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Whitten I would put these about four feet apart for a screen. They can compete with each other very well.

If it's up against a structure, it would be worth a try. Cotoneaster is a groundcover version of this. Same white flowers and berries, but much more cold hardy.
